Yeah, I want to see the details on how they handle it. Smitty was announced as a 3 year extension and that was for years 6-8 of his career; kicked in after year 4 and the 5th year option that was already picked up. If Carter is the same, it's a 6 year, $183mm deal, or just over $30mm AAV.

Btw, people who say Carter only had one elite season are wrong. People make the mistake of comparing his rookie numbers to all NFL DTs, which is foolish. You have to compare him to rookies, especially at that position. DT more than any other position takes a long time to develop. Carter was 15th as a rookie in pressures. People say that isn't elite. For a rookie it is.

Only 3 rookie DTs since 2006 have finished top 15 in pressures. Aaron Donald, Ndamukong Suh, Jalen Carter. For a rookie to do that, it is elite.

He had one non elite season which was 2025, and no coincidence he had shoulder troubles.

I was looking for something like 3 years, $105 million on the extension with like $80mm gteed - would have him under contract for 5 years at like $27mm AAV. Then Simmons signed, so now it's 6 years, $30.5mm AAV. Still works.

Yeah - I was thinking with $106mm gteed, that's really $75mm in incremental on top of the ~31mm he's due the next 2 years. So basically 2 years more at $38mm AAV of the extension. I'd bet that 2026-2029 are fully gteed, and there's a nominal gtee for 2030. The salaries are probably well over 40mm in 2030 and 2031, making it more of a 4 year, ~$110mm commitment.

I suspect this contract proposal has been there for some time but was contingent on the shoulders checking out in his physical today.

If Carter is fully healthy and has the type of season he's capable of, this should save the Eagles a pretty penny. I know people would argue that waiting to see if he is immature this season to give him the money is worth the extra money it'll cost, but that extra money might cost you one of your core defensive players or the ability to go out and make a splash next offseason or the offseason after.

Carter getting 10-12 sacks this season, which he's perfectly capable of, and that dude would be getting 50m per next year. Getting him at 38 AAV now helps.

Based on straight line comp - will likely be more back end loaded. But to give an idea. $3.2mm of dead money from his old deal hits this year, FYI.

What are the chances he did the contract now so as to get it out of the way and start preparing for Mitchell and Cooper?

We can't do Coop and Q extensions until next offseason, but locking this in is vital to structuring those deals after the season. JC, JD, Coop and Q will be the core 4 on defense.

Howie is always doin deals as soon as it makes sense. They waited on JD because they weren't ready to commit after 2024 - he showed promise at the end of the year, but they wanted to see it in 2025, so picked up his 5th year and had him play year 4 (doing the same with Nolan). But with guys like Hurts, Smitty, Dickerson, Jurgens, etc. he signed them after year 3. It's about long term planning on cap allocations - he now knows what he is working with for the next few years and can plan accordingly.

Kempski is more down on Cameron Williams than other local media people. Has Hinton making the team over him and thinks he could be a guy traded before the season. I think Williams is pretty ahead of Hinton at this point.

I’m late to this…Arby’s isn’t as bad as I’m seeing some people say IMO. Though unironically i moved back to Qtown after retiring, in the 2 and some change years I’ve been back, I’ve never eaten at that Arby’s. Tropical Smoothie is across the street though, so that’s probably the main reason.

It's going to be a year away but I wonder what the plan is with Nolan Smith. Howie typically doesn't like players playing on a 5th year number and it's hard to see them extending him after paying Greenard, Davis and Carter. He also probably will want to get ahead of taking care of Hunt which I could see him doing next offseason.
