Still no Lane Johnson. Landon Dickerson is out also

I would assume if it was something serious or contract related reporters would have some information about it.

Really like this kid. Good hands.

I am assuming it's something serious, just a personal matter. They had an off day too so he's been away for almost a week.

Lane has averaged a little less than 13 games played per season throughout his career - only playing a full season THREE times. Between his mental and physical health and the roids thing, this is nothing new.

Starting to wonder if they need to consider being without Lane this season and going forward.

Lane doesn't need camp. He also figures to play half the snaps, so whomever the backup RT is better get ALL the work with the 1's in camp.

Yeah I don't know about that. it is a brand new offense with different blocking schemes. The continuity is really important right now. The biggest issue from last preseason was the OL had only a few snaps together as entire unit through all of training camp. People in here were very confident that the lack of cohesiveness along the OL would not be an issue...

This is also the first time in his professional career Lane has had a different position coach which just amplifies the new offense and blocking scheme aspect.

It was more health that impacted the oline. They’ve played together a long time, I doubt chemistry, communication are an issue. We clearly had major health issues with 3/5 oline heading into the season. Rest was the biggest mistake

Welp, if Lane’s issue isn’t a physical problem, it’s…….probably a mental one? I hate surmising, but, he has had these issues before.

Yup. Before it wasn't really important because his experience wasn't in question and it's more just shaking off the rust

But this system is different so it'd be better if he actually was there

To be fair, most of the information out there that I've seen is this is simplified for the OL, so maybe it's not super at issue?...maybe....

I am sure it's family related but hopefully it's not an issue that won't get resolved.

If he was taking time for mental health treatment, I think it would be reported.

They're supposed to get more help and not be left on an island right? So I would think getting snaps together would help be more concise as a group

There is no reason to expect Lane to be available for the stretch run or playoffs this year. We all know their record without him playing.

Even with a new system, getting work in for a guy who has played for 3 head coaches and more OC's than I can count and uniformly played at an all pro level for all of them is a far lower priority than getting work in for backups when this team is consistently DOA when Lane doesn't play.

Salary cap musing:

There is no cap or luxury tax on signing/extending "your players." You home grow stars, you don't get penalized for it and you can keep them all.

Every team has a "free agency allotment." You sign away a player in FA, that contract, like a cap hit, has a number for each year of the contract that irreversibly counts against your allotment. If you extend that player to another contract (either before conclusion of the initial contract or at the very end), their original contract counts against your allotment in the aforementioned fashion. But their years beyond that...they count as one of "your guys" again as an internal extension. So if you sign someone to 5 years $20mm per year....that never goes away, no matter what you do. But after 5 years, if you sign them to another contract, it doesn't count. If you extend or cut them after 3 years, you still get the 5 year 20mm hit. Beyond the 5 years, the extension is capless, as they are one of "your guys."

Trades...well...trading parties can negotiate/toggle who gets stuck with the allotted FA dollars, which will impact compensation. Trading home grown players with expiring deals from small to large market teams...who could then extend a "our guy" contract free of the cap allotment is a potential loophole. But you could just stipulate that any extensions of deadline deals counts against the allotted FA $$$.

It's a capless system that still allows teams to push the limit on player salaries. But it completely eliminates the ability of one team to go rogue and buy a roster.

The weakness with that model is some sort of contract term manipulation. Signing players to shorter deals 1-2 years and then extending them in the capless "our guy" model for huge money. Might need a vesting period or something.

Players may hate it because it introduces an unprecedented penalty for rich teams if they miss in free agency. Can't just burry those mistakes and costs with an unending well of funds. Suddenly, EVERYONE becomes very scrupulous with big FA deals. The other side of that coin is that teams, ideally, open the checkbook far more liberally with extending their own players. There simply would be no excuse to let a good player walk outside of major interpersonal drama.

I meant to post this in the baseball thread, but it's kind of interesting for the NFL (although, if it ain't broke, don't fix it).

This scenario in the NFL would make it effortless for the Eagles to keep their defense intact. Sweat would still be here, as would Milton Williams.

Yes injuries and very shortened offseason was a big contributor. What I saw from game 1 was much more than players being out on the field when they were not physically capable. There were crippling OL penalties, blown assignments and timing issues which lingered all season. Saquon was touched in the backfield on the overwhelming majority of his carries...of all the units that need time together, none is more critical than the OL. And it will be true again this year...the Eagles success is completely dependent on the OL.

I was wondering what was taking them so long. They obviously are out on Aiyuk

With how hobbled the offense already is I hope they don't play any of the starters in preseason.
