Dejean is not a starting safety. They only play in base about 15% of the time. The other 85% of the time he will be at slot corner and Epps will be on the field. Nice try though.

They need someone who can catch passes if Goedert gets hurt. That isn't Calcaterra, that sure as hell isn't Mudnt, and it doesn't look like Stowers is anywhere close to ready.

My take on him would've been the same if he didn't play in the preseason or in camp. It's what I felt watching him in college and I've seen nothing to change my opinion on him.

They just got Kittle back today.

If you keep a 4th TE then you have to go light at another spot which you don’t want to do at OL or DL for future reasons. I think they’ll just practice squad a TE and run the risk there. You’re unlikely to magically sign a quality backup to Goedert anyway. If he really gets hurt maybe you do look at Ertz since you have Mundt to block

Kelee Ringo might have played the best game of his Eagles career. He didn’t have a tackle, but that is because he covered well and the ball went away from him. Ringo looked good in off coverage. He ran with his receiver and stayed in good position. He was confident and alert. Ringo jumped a route early in the game. Should have been a pick-six, but he dropped the ball. I now lean toward Ringo making the team. He was a pleasant surprise on Saturday night.

Nickel has been the base defense in the NFL for the last 15+ years in response to the offenses scheming around 11 personnel. 4-3, 3-4 personnel is suited to stop the run and is currently a sub-package used in short-yardage situations and versus heavy personnel. Even against teams like the Rams that have recently favored multiple TEs sets over 11 personnel the response has been to play nickel albeit DBs like Dejean with S/LB-like qualities make this more viable as they can handle the run fits better near the LoS.

The 4-3/3-4 nomenclature nowadays is a better indication of DL alignment (which even then is very fluid) than anything to do with the number LBs on the field - as the 2 LB, 5 DB deployment is standard.

Did I need to write this? I guess so, as I don’t think you’re trolling… but this is likely some sort of thought experiment on your part that I don’t quite follow.

I’d likely be less concerned if we had another outside CB body on the roster, but as it stands if Q or Woolen get dinged we’re either pulling Dejean out of the nickel (which I’m loathe to do) or we plug in Jones who’s quite small.

The terminology is antiquated. Back in the day those terms were coined, teams spent the majority of the game playing in their "base" defense, and switched to nickel for special situations. That is completely different now. The Eagles play predominantly in the "Nickel" now, so calling the other alignment "base" really doesn't make a lot of sense. Playing "base" ~20% of the time doesn't align with the term very well.
