If Eagles showed interest in him now, will not be surprised if they pursue him in free agency.

I'm ok with not landing him via trade as we can just pursue him in FA. Hopefully he wants to come here though and not stick with a strong contender ala Seattle.

Steve Avila is a free agent as well. They need to sign a stud o-lineman. Too bad we didn't save some of the money rather than the DT extensions but Howie better not just continue to extend all the underachieving defensive players after what we are witnessing.

Quinyon is the only one but they absolutely adore Coop so see no way he's not extended. Regardless, the once dominant o-line is a broken and majorly depleted unit. Time to start the rebuild there.

Not worth any kind of real investment. Inconsistent. And not a fit. Better than White. Ha. But this is who he is and why Seattle didn't bother. Josh Jobe played ahead of him. Another Howie mistake in not keeping Jobe for peanuts, that we never talk about.

Those are usually AC decisions, if a coach won't play a backup, Howie has no reason to keep him.

Jobe wasn't a money issue. They wanted to keep Eli Ricks over him.

Feels like Jeff putting this out there is someone in that organization wanted him too or team stoutland wanting him too

Feels like Jeff is ignoring the talent that Stoutland had to work with a few years ago, it's one thing to run behing LD, Kelce/Jurgens, Lane, another behind Jurgens/Lumpkin, Majors and Bell.

If LD can stay healthy and improve a bit, Bell settles in and Kendall keeps improving, they can lean on the run again, but what RB? Pierce? Barkley and his hammie?

True. I'm just saying he was easy to keep as cheap help at that time. We have the beautiful Johnathan Jones as our current cheap help right now. Who gets attacked and murdered every time he's out there. They couldn't even evaluate that he was worth keeping as a spare part. And now he's a starter.

@vikas83 Question: if Hurts has to miss more than this season, can the Eagles recoup salary through insurance? And if Hurts is insured for injury, which I am certain he is, does the insurance recoupment affect dead money?

Feels like you forget how many guys stoutland helped build who weren’t heralded or weren’t when they got here. that i pointed out to you yesterday and had no response… vaitai 7th rounder, journeymen barbre and wiz had best years, Evan Mathis and Brandon brooks weren’t all pro when they got to the eagles. They became that with stoutland. Legit mailata had never played football in his life and was a 7th round pick. Became a pro bowl caliber LT. Driscoll and Matt Pryor were serviceable backups. Heck Pryor started some games. Becton has never played better than under stoutland. Seumalo was a 3rd rounder that most thought was a bust.

Besides darrisaw who has Kuper done anything with? Bradbury had never lived up to expectations and Donovan jackson was below avg last year.

Perhaps we can interest the Bears in a lightly used Moro Ojomo…

@vikas83 Question: if Hurts has to miss more than this season, can the Eagles recoup salary through insurance? And if Hurts is insured for injury, which I am certain he is, does the insurance recoupment affect dead money?

So, per Spotrac, Hurts contract was insured for $85 million for the years 2023-2026. Assuming that was evenly spread out at $21.25 million per year, and we were able to claim 12/17ths (for the games on IR missed), we should be entitled to ~70.5% or ~$15 million. Now, I want to be clear that this is based on a couple assumptions that I can't verify: (i) the insurance is evenly spread over all 4 years, and (ii) it would apply in this case. If that is correct, my understanding is the Eagles would get a cap credit of $15mm which would hit in 2027.

This doesn't reduce the dead cap from trading or cutting a player, it simply adds more cap space for the team the following year. Obviously would be there to help absorb the dead money, but could also be used to add other players.

The other large swing factor for 2027 cap space is do they get any money back from Lane - Lane was paid a $21.7 million option bonus that vested before week 1. If the Eagles asked for 14/17th of that back, that would be almost ~$18 million. But it's unclear what the Eagles will ask for - the Lions, as an example, were publicly dragged for making CJ repay part of his signing bonus. It will likely be some kind of a negotiation.

Here's a very high level look at 2027 cap for now. Lots of moving pieces. And bear in mind, only 36 players under contract and no extension for Q here.

Scroll up

For the record, if the best case happens and we have over $80mm in cap space, Nick Wright is going to shoot himself on live television.

The insurance and Lane things will be interesting. With Lane and DG, you're stealing from 2028 to a degree.

Depends what kind of coach they want to hire, if they do. That works when you bring in a new, under the radar hire whose happy to have the job. I can see the Eagles swinging the pendulum a bit in their process to get the guy they want rather then settle for a guy.

Who would be the hot coaching hire in the NFL? Declan Doyle? Maybe they could trade for Kyle Shanahan.

I don't see him coming here, but have to think Tomlin will be sought after if he wants to get back into coaching.

How screwed would we be cap wise if he had to retire for health reasons because of the clot?

Tomlin as the HC. Steichen as the OC. Gym Shorts as the DC.

I’d take that group of 3 over the current ones. 🦅🏈

Probably should’ve more if the defense is going to just show up to collect a paycheck

Thank you for always breaking these things down, it's helpful.

I think with Lane, out of respect for him they wouldn't try to recoup money, but we'll see.

That's a good amount of cap space already though, and with the Q deal he'll do things like signing bonus and structure it back loaded and the other things he does. I could see him signing a high profile free agent this offseason - not overpay an average player, but a player worth it.

I think Howie and Lurie want the next evolution of their success: a dynasty. They want at least to win back-to-back Super Bowls. They've been able to achieve it twice with different coaching regimes and mostly different roster. I think they want to prove they can win multiple. I don't see an expectation for a 3 year rebuild type deal. I see an offseason where he signs free agents to step in and start, trading for proven players at key positions and getting back to drafting premium positions high.

Well, it's not great. If he retires for health reasons, I'm not sure how his $22 million of guaranteed 2027 comp would be treated. My guess is he still gets it since his retirement would be involuntary. That makes the dead money hit just under $106mm. Assuming we processed it after June 1, the 2027 dead cap would be ~$52.8 million, and the net cost would be $10.6 million (his current cap charge for 2027 is ~$42.1 million). The balance of ~$53 million would hit 2028.

Do it. For a 3rd or a 4th. Probably would get a least a 5th, so, maybe a 4th and a 5th. 🙃
