What happens to that cap space? Can we make a trade now for a lineman or RB?

No trades. Unless we're trading guys away. The season was already sheety. It'll only get worse from here

It's how Eagles structure contracts. It doesn't become null and void because it's all money that was paid while he was playing that has not yet been accounted for. It's not new money or anything, it's just they have to account for it because they decided not to in previous years.

Do we clear any cap space for next off-season with him retiring?

On a lighter note, this would be the second straight year a player retired on us in the middle of the season. (Technically he came back this year but at the time)

There was some LB or DE in 2024 that retired during TC too I think.

When a player is contemplating retiring and you have to convince them to return, which means he was likely leaning towards retiring, the possibility of walking out at any moment is always on the table. Either way, the team was informed.

How many seasons has he played? I know they increased it to 17 but it's never been 3. Keep the commitment. No free passes. Half of you will say ohhh poor baby it's fine we love you. Some like me will say dick move but he's still the best ever. Others will hate him. Either way, his rep is tarnished now and will be debated forever.

All time goofy take

I’ve seen way, way worse on here. Some of them from me.

I wonder if they'd officially retire 65 or just not allow it to be used

we really sacrificed all 3 of the other teams in order for the Sixers to get Jaylen Brown and LeBron James

Could you imagine the media attention if Lane retired when Stoutland also left the team?

I mean he basically did outside of 3 games

Clear? No. He's currently at $21.09M in cap space next year. If he filed his papers now, its like I said, a $42M dead cap hit in 2027, so effectively losing $21M in space. If they drag it out and file his papers in 2027 post June 1st, it would push $21M into 2028 and his dead cap would just be $21.09M which would just be a wash.

Hell while we’re at it, do you think Hurts will retire? I’d love that

I’m not sure too many ppl know what exactly is going on with Lane but as of right now this tarnishes his legacy.

You don’t quit midseason.

Nah

He probably should’ve- in any case, another reason we should’ve kept Stout.

Out!

And people said AJ quit on the team...

Oh go blow him. He’s great, no denying that, but you quit less than a quarter of the way into the season? Maybe there’s more to it, which I insinuated, but to retire now isn’t exactly a "hero’s goodbye” like you several of you pom pom wavers are acting like it is.

If he could play, he would. Clearly, he can't. Sorry it upset you so much. Maybe he should have personally came and asked your advice while you sit on your beanbag chair, eating Cheetos.

Nobody has earned the right to a free pass to screw the team in the middle of a season. I'm sorry his parents are sick. Many of us are in that situation. You can't blame the Eagles for trying to bring him back. At that point you either retire or honor things. If you agree to play you play it out. It's a dick move.

Seriously dude, touch some grass.

Miles Jack retired. Idk what year though

My ignore list seems to still be accurate.

Well at this point we can just have retirement ceremonies every week.

First on deck: Andy Dalton

Second, LD

Third, CJ

And so on...

Going forward, this OL will have its growing pains. I can 100% see significant improvement in the running game, almost instantly. Which has a low bar to beat.

In pass pro, I can see improvement at LG & C in the passing game while we take a large hit at RT, but a smaller hit by the EOY. Net positive hopefully.

Every day people go to work in that situation. I’m not trying to sound heartless, just stating my opinion.

Like I said, there could be more to it.

And that is out of necessity. If I had the financial freedom to be with my parents on their deathbed then I would do it. I wouldn't be passing that up for some loyalty to a corporate job.

Kinda disgusting to try to attack Lane over this. The Eagles knew what they were getting into talking him into coming back this season. They knew this was on the table to happen.

Can he take Campbell and Dickerson with him?

Sounds like it'd be great if we had a starting QB on a rookie deal for the 2027 season ph34r

That could be looking more and more realistic every Sunday qb1 sheets the bed

Dude, I honestly don’t care that he quit. Could not give two F’s. Will lose zero sleep over it. I would have said the same thing about a Dallas player who did the same thing.

Someone do some digging.

Howie has insurance policies on contracts so if a player is injured we get cap space back.

Is there a policy on Lane, and can his mental health reasons qualify as an injury covered by the policy?
