The $45 million is just a signal of how much he wants a four year deal and not a five year deal. I imagine that is a counter so if Jerry wants to spread the bonus to a fifth year, Dak is willing for a voidable fifth year.  In essence I believe this means they agree on the four years and are pushing on the fifth.  Bet it gets worked out during the franchise negotiation period.

The Cowboys are definitely locked in on Dak and we know he's pushing for a certain value for the 4 years.  They'll get it done, as you say, in that period.  Jerry Jones's desperation for a SB is making him do deals that could be more optimal.

Having said that, Dak could well sit and take the Franchise Tag.   If can replicate the numbers from last season, he could be paid even more.  Big risk tho

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

As for Phil Jackson, just stumbled across this. No idea how much truth is in it

Matt Rhule brought his DC to lead the Carolina defense. Iowa State plays really good defense despite not having top talent. It’s something to keep an eye on with all the hybrid safeties we have and nickel type players.

Eagles play a lot of three S in their dime package but in most it is still a single high S.  The SS is typically playing a hybrid role.  I think Schwartz like his SAM, WIL and SS to be hybrid SS/LB.

Seems to me signing Curry would suggest the Avery trade was a mistake.

I had totally forgotten about Avery.

Here we go again with people hoping the Cowboys extend Dak.  Dak has owned the Eagles.  He has better weapons around him now too.  Not going to get any easier defending that offense.  The Cowboys aren't nearly as strapped for cash as the Eagles are.  They have their $100 million WR, $60 million RB and soon to be $175 million quarterback, still have a solid O-line and drafted a young promising player with the pick they got from the Eagles.  They drafted a ton of young talent this year.

I will never understand.  Eagles fans on here cheered when the signed Cooper for $100 milion.  He's killed the Eagles (granted Slay has owned him so we will see now).  Zeke is still a top 3 RB in the league and Dak for as average as he is functions ion that offense.

Um, we beat them last year when it really mattered with scrubs.

Dak feasted on weak opponents last year.

I'm happy if they overpay him. Means less help in other areas.

The Cowboys have 3 playoff wins since their last Super Bowl win.

They are hardly a team to be modeled after.

Interestingly enough, Curry led the Eagles last year in both outside and inside pressure rate.

Yup, it's why I've said he earned a 1 or 2 year deal last year.

I will never, for the life of me, understand the Dak love fest that goes on in here. Go be a Cowboys fan.

Guy has one of the most talented rosters in football and had all the pretty stats in the world while leading his team to a shiny 8-8 record.

He's so overrated I could puke. He's an okay quarterback that is and always has been elevated because of the team around him. Give him our offense from last season and he wins three games. The Dakscuses of "oh, he had a booboo on his shoulder" can be saved for the Cowboys forum, thanks.

Meanwhile our quarterback wins the division with a few cardboard cutouts and TATErs lined up at receiver and people want him out of town over an illegal spear to the head. Give me a break.

The longer Dak holds out the more it hurts the Eagles when they try to sign Hurts to his next contract.

Please tell me you're joking, because if not....

Just wow.

It's ok. Schwartz probably has too.

Winning one leads to winning the other.  You are just being difficult disputing the obvious fact that they have not drafted well enough in recent years.

As the list shows no it doesn't.

You really want to crawl out along that "drafting doesn’t matter” branch?  Go for it.

The Saints have drafted very well the last few years. That is very obvious. The Eagles have been average. That is also obvious.

Who said the Eagles weren't average?

Didn't know that.

The defensive back depth chart is going to be interesting.

My guess is that the starters will be McLeod, Mills, Slay and Maddox or Jones, with Robey-Coleman at nickel. Then the first guy off the bench in dime will be a battle between Parks/Wallace/LeBlanc and the loser or the Maddox/Jones battle.

Ideally Jones wins the starting outside corner role and they start training Maddox to take over for McLeod. He has the speed to play back there, but who knows if he can do it at his size. LeBlanc looks like the odd man out at this point, but I am sure after the team goes through its normal rash of injuries, he will be starting at outside corner along with Rasul Douglas.

I'm not saying model the Eagles after them.  Every team decides where they want to invest heavy.  The Cowboys clearly think WR, RB, LB and QB are the places to go.  The Eagles on the other hand invest in O/D-line, QB, TE and old WR.

Funny to mention Dak feasting on weak teams.  That's basically what the AR/DMac led teams did.  The NFC East was absolute trash i the 2000s.

The Eagles have 1 win since their last Super Bowl.  I'm being a smarta$$ with that comment but what do playoff wins matter if you don't win the big one.  We can say oh look at AR's playoff record and the amount of times the Eagles went to the NFCCG, well all those wins and we have nothing to show for it.

My whole point is Dak works for the Cowboys.  They have done a very good job of surrounding him with talent to let him perform at a high level.  He has his limitations yes.  He also has yet to miss a game due to injury.  The Cowboys aren't cap strapped and still will be able to sign Dak to whatever deal they agree on.  I'm guessing $40 million/year.

And that's all fine and well.

Not worried one bit about Dak and getting $8 mil a year more than a QB that is better than he.

I'm not worried either but I just find it a bit comical that people are excited they are deciding to pay their QB.  Now if he had all those weapons and was a terrible QB I would agree but if that's what they decide to pay him then so be it.  It keeps their offense together and keeps them as a threat to the Eagles.

They are overpaying drastically.

That's the point.

$35 I could see, anything above that is 🤣

They only have about $4M in cap space for 2020 and $33M in space without Dak for 2021, so if he’s signed at anything over $35M AAV they might not be strapped, but there isn’t much room for them either.

They will be without Frederick to anchor their OL, they lost Robert Quinn who was their best pass rusher last season (replaced him with 2 guys coming off lengthy suspension), lost Byron Jones to FA, and really didn’t bring in anyone to improve their team; just re-signed some of their 8-8 guys.  Huge question mark over LVE’s health, and don’t forget Kris Richard is now gone — big loss.

As far as Dak goes, he played last season like it was a contract year — if he doesn’t sign an extension he will be demotivated in 2020.  If he does sign a mega-deal he will likely play "fat” like Zeke, Lawrence, and Jaylon Smith did last season.

Listening to the Eagle Eye Podcast with Reub and Dave Zangaro. They had Merrill on. He told a story about Chip after the 2014 win in Dallas on Thanksgiving. After the game, Merrill went up to Chip before getting on the plane and congratulated him on the victory, and that the game was a real joy to call. Chip just responded with "Oh," and walked away. So glad that guy isn't here anymore.

His self awareness was and will always be his biggest enemy.  His self improvement starts with Dalton from Roadhouse (worst best movie ever made).

Chip ignored the first part.

I’d say anyone who chooses to be known as Chip instead of Charles is lacking in self awareness.

Kelly was for sure a Grade A ****. I forget the details but I remember Zach Berman said a similar story about him just responding with one word answers and then walking away. And then there's the Christmas Party story. Glad he's far away.

One last thought on Dak and QB contracts...

I think what gets overlooked is that in 2-3 years like half the league will have invested $30M+ into their starting QB.

In 2022, cap hits are:

Cousins ... $45M
Ryan ... $41M
Rodgers ... $39M
Wilson ... $37M
Tannehill ... $34M
Goff ... $32M
Wentz ... $31M
Garoppolo ... $27M
Stafford ... $26M
Bridgewater ... $26M

Over the next two years, you figure to add Prescott, Mahomes, Watson, Jackson ... and we'll see for the younger, less proven QBs. Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, Murray, Jones, Haskins.

So about half the league will be paying $30M+ per year for their QB. It's become common place. Is it a disadvantage for those 16 or so teams compared to the other half? Sure. But there's a pretty good chance those other teams who aren't paying top dollar for a QB aren't relevant - or they have a QB on their rookie contract.

It's just not the burden people think it is, IMO.

The problem is if you pay a QB who isn't worth it that kind of money.
