You almost always have to have trade offs with players, even the great ones. The best Pep Barca teams relied on incredible skill, passing and movement… but they paid the price in size, athleticism, fitness, etc. That was one of the reasons Mourinho was able to wrestle control away from them in La Liga. He came in with a bunch of athletes and they just couldn’t cope. To play a high press, high intensity tactic when you lose possession requires hyper physicality. To play possession oriented quick passing requires hyper skill. And both require hyper intelligence. There just aren’t that many players out there with that kind of blend. It might work in third rate leagues, but doing that in the EPL is going to leave you exposed. Like, I’d love to know where these high IQ, high work rate, world class first touch and vision players are that can play this style in the EPL. Who are these guys with the work rate to hound the other team in possession, the strength to win the ball back, the vision to make the right first pass to spark the counter, and the touch to hold the ball in tight spaces? I watched arguably the two greatest midfields in history between Barca and Madrid do battle. The only guy of the 6 starters I think could work in such a system is Modric. And he won a Ballon d’Or over prime Messi and Ronaldo. Then you look at those famous teams attacking players and the two best of the modern game would be a liability in such a system. Both Ronnie and Messi just don’t have the defensive work rate for gegenpress. This system requires teamwide coordination, speed, strength, and aggressiveness when you lose control of the ball. Again, looking at those great Spanish teams, I could see Bale and Suarez fitting in such a system, but definitely not Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo or Benzema. And if the majority of peak Madrid and Barca players would be a bad fit in a system, maybe the system isn’t so good. Just saying…

March 9, 20224 yr Author Messi sucks. Whats it been now - half a decade since he scored at Madrid? Man, adding Mbappe to that right flank and possibly Haaland up front is going to make this Madrid attack terrifying.
March 9, 20224 yr Author Madrid had great energy in that second half. Camavinga is going to be really, really good. Rodrygo brought a ton of energy as well — I still have hopes he’ll figure out his finishing like Vini and ascend to world class. And what can you say about Benzema. What a player! Probably the most well rounded #9 of his generation. He was a threat in the air, from range, fantastic off ball movement… he needs serious consideration for the ballon d’Or. People are somehow sleeping on Madrid. It’s true this isn’t our best side ever compared to the 3 peat years, but UCL is Madrid’s game. They’re always going to be a draw you don’t want.
March 10, 20224 yr Gigio was clearly fouled by Benzema on that first goal. Calls on the disallowed goals were legit, but that one was awful.

He just isn’t an impact player — and he’s always been a choke artist. Man, imagine being PSG… you add Messi and get a pathetic 2 league goals and first round UCL knockout because he can’t convert a penalty, then watch your best player leave for the team that just humiliated you. Then you’re so arseblasted this happens: https://amp.marca.com/en/football/psg/2022/03/10/62292ef646163f39888b45dd.html

The big difference is that Leo had an entire tactical system and team built around his strengths where as Ronaldo was more versatile. That and Ronaldo is one of the all time greatest clutch players in sport while Messi tends to choke. Messi at his best is very ball dominant where as Ronaldo can be your traditional outlet on the wing dribbling down the flank, or a poacher inside, or anything in between. What’s striking is how much better Ronaldo is at this stage even as he is a few years older. You would have expected Ronaldo to hit the wall harder considering he’s closer to 40 than 30, but he’s still a lethal finisher. Messi meanwhile is still ball dominant but unproductive, and plays in a far less challenging league.
March 11, 20224 yr Chelsea needs an owner asap or they will be Fed this off season Just read their bank accounts have been frozen

The EPL sold it soul to the highest bidder over the past 15 years anyway. Abramovich, Usmanov, Saudi's MBS, Mansour at Man City... They talk about a fit and proper persons test when it comes to ownership but til now it was just lip service. I for one won't lose any sleep over it
March 12, 20224 yr Author Not sure how accurate they are, but people are saying it’s a solid source. I wonder though if this is just a deal with the club or also the player. Two different things. Whereever he ends up, I expect him to move to another league after 3-5 years.
