Granted, Lurie eventually cut ties, but it took him what, 15 years to do so? I wonder if the game has passed DD by. The trades and pickups he did 10+ years ago don't work anymore. Teams and front offices are much smarter now.

The league has changed its approach with pitching instead of just blowing it past guys all the time. More teams are using sweepers and off speed to counter what long’s approach for his hitters are. His approach is outdated and the league is attacking it.

Middleton is writing the checks, DD just doesn’t spend the money wisely. He really is the problem. The only positive is that DD hasn’t traded away the farm (sans O’hoppe).I agree with your earlier post. If the team keeps trending downwards through the end of May, they need to blow this thing up. Casty, Schwarber, JT, Bohm, Ranger, Kepler, Walker and Nola should all be on the trading block. Clear salary, accumulate bullpen depth and go big in FA bats next offseason.

At that point it should be going the route of playing young guys and doing a 2 year reset so you get guys like schwarber, realmuto, castellanos, walker and etc money off the books and starting a new era. The issue i think they come to is same thing the Phillies had an issue with at the end of 2012. Where they can’t see the writing on the wall that this era and core is finished. I think Middleton and Dombrowski would feel like it’s essentially wasting last 2 years of wheeler’s career and 2 years of prime Harper. Frankly if they are unloading guys and saying they aren’t contenders right now they should go to wheeler and say do you want to be here the next two years where we probably don’t compete for a WS title or be dealt to a Ws contender. Unfortunately it stinks to deal him but the package of prospects they’d get back would be really good and makes the next era potentially greater.

Hoskins off an acl injury had 26 in less than 140 games. His currently slashes are .273/.380/.804. When they brought Turner on it wasn’t to replace hoskins. It was to elongate the lineup and be more potent. They haven’t and bohm, marsh haven’t developed power.
