EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

If Hurts doesn’t play, it feels increasingly likely that we drop another game to Dallas and have to play everyone week 18 just to clinch.

But I’m sure that won’t be a popular take.

If they lose to Dallas, then they HAVE to play to win in Week 18.   They can't fall from the 2 seed all the way to the 6 seed... or potentially the 7.  That would be a collapse, almost as big as last year, just in fewer weeks.

I am curious how they handle the #1 reps this week in practice though.   Pickett is banged up, at minimum.   Does he get all the #1 reps, or do they mix in McKee?   Does Pickett practice all week, and then get ruled out last minute?   Does McKee take all the #1 reps, and then they go with Pickett if he's cleared?   And then there's the Hurts factor.   When can he actually practice?  The independent neurologist report will be an intrigue all week long.

Personally, I'd be ok with riding with McKee for the game if need be.   I'm really curious about him.  Granted, we don't see practice, but he does seem to always perform well in PS... of course, that's against mostly scrubs.  So, it might mean absolutely nothing.  Once upon a time, Brad Goebel looked good in preseason too, and we saw what happened with him when the games counted.

Hot take for fun -- Atlanta is going to curb stomp Washington on Sunday Night. They seriously are acting like they won the Super Bowl.

Yeah, an emotional let down could very well be in the cards for them... which would render the outcome against Dallas moot for the 2 seed.

Hurts dove forward... but he definitely didn't need to have a guy jump on top of him from behind.   Borderline dirty... but definitely seemed to be head contact.

If he was a running back nobody would bat an eye - when he runs like that he isn’t afforded special protection, and getting hit is a part of his game unfortunately. I don’t think it was dirty, I wish our guys lit up Daniels on that 4th and 11 but they didn’t play aggressively.

I honestly think you're going to see Hurts practicing, albeit limited, on Wednesday. My bet is he clears protocol and starts against Dallas.

There are a bunch of receiving TEs but precious few of them can block at the next level. Warren is probably the best of the bunch at that just based on size but he is at best mediocre as a blocker. I’m more inclined to take a FB like, say, Max Bredeson from Michigan and convert him to HB/TE. Sometime in Day 3.

I would absolutely love to see the FB reintroduced in Philly!   But, would they be willing to invest a draft pick in one?   They might just move Van Sumeran full time and let him learn some TE stuff.  But, I would absolutely love a FB here.

Did I mention I'd love a FB?   I love FBs.  Give me Lorenzo Neal 2.0!   Maybe make it the more 21st century version of a FB, and we can get a Keith Byars or Larry Centers style guy who can contribute to the passing game.

Rarely does Elliott come up short, it looked like he put too much height on the kick. In the playoffs 3 points matters more times than not. It's nice to have those kicks.

The real issue was we get the ball at the WA 48 yard line with 1:40ish on the clock and we end up having to try a 56 yard FG with 4 seconds left in the half.

Agreed... which is why I have been adamant against using him that way for YEARS.

Chance the commanders still miss the playoffs. If Atlanta beats them and then beats Carolina in week 18 and Tampa wins out against Carolina and New Orleans then commanders lose in Dallas week 18 they’d lose tiebreaker to Tampa.

I saw him much more in an H-back or wing back alignment.  Maybe I missed when he was in the I formation.  But, that's what I am talking about.  I formation, under center, or even offset I, but under center.  Those RO action runs with Pickett were pretty darn close to useless.  Pistol, under center, or just forget it.

Sorry for not being clearer. Uzomah was strictly a blocker. We ran a few pistol alignments but no I formation. Not strictly a FB but certainly a blocking back.

It was a helmet to helmet hit.  Defender led with his helmet as Hurts was going down.

Well, Vegas thinks Hurts will be back it seems

That goes back to what Jalen is, I think he needs to be a runner to be effective BUT he also needs to avoid hits… mostly if we aren’t talking 1st down/touchdown.

The concussion seemed to come from the defender using his hand to slam Hurts' head into the turf after the initial contact. It was dirty and unnecessary.

I will say, there are a couple people on my FB feed blaming this loss on...Jalen Hurts?

At some point, just admit you hate the guy irrationally.

This wasn’t a Clowney spearing, this was Jalen getting hit hard and bouncing his head off the turf.

Just saying

That's an insane line.

My issue was more luvu leading with his helmet on the play after he began going down. To me I’ve seen the league call that a penalty this year a ton of times

Tbh the one where they threw the flag and picked it up with Pickett was imo BS. The defender goes for the tackle after he began to slide but not just go for the tackle leading with his forearm. Defender is super fortunate pickett’s helmet went just under it. That felt like the defender was trying to get a cheap shot in at his head leading with his forearm. Imo i don’t think he was using his forearm to take a shot at his chest or shoulder pads. Imo He was trying for a head shot and missed cause of pickett’s head going under it.

Gonna be a big fine

Can Hurts practice before he clears protocol? I'm under the impression that he can't but could be wrong.

Good for him.  Unsportsmanlike penalties for trash talk is ridiculous.

The slamming Hurts head down is what I noticed. But only on slo mo replay so I could see where the officials could legitimately miss it.

F the refs and Hurts is gonna play

wash is the fraud we thought they were almost cooked by Pickett the worst qb I have seen in a minute

Yes, there are various steps. Guys can practice on a limited basis while still in protocol if they pass the initial steps, but before being fully cleared.

They needed a TD on that possession where they went Wildcat on 3rd down.   That play made no sense.   Don't get cute.  Ram the ball at them, and you still have 4th down if you get stopped.  They needed to impose their will on that drive... AND, they were up until that 3rd down play where they went with the Wildcat.

100%.  BUT the wildcat play should have worked.  Saquon failed to execute.  if he threw just as the receiver broke, it was a TD (assuming we don't botch another easy toss and catch).
