You are acting like 66 mil they can’t go sign one good OLineman in FAnand add depth. Also they can create even more cap space by restructuring guys. hence why they have $66 moving into 2025. cap situation isn’t going to be an issue. I find it funny that’s going to prevent them from adding depth and talent. the niners continue to find ways to be savvy with their cap. like the eagles having Barkley at 3.8 against the cap in 2024 and 5.5 in 2025. You are acting like lynch hasn’t been savvy like that to have the space he does going into 2025

Add on having spent 2 picks from this past draft on OL. One is Puni who’s the 6th best graded guard by PFF; a third rounder. They have 3 guys locked in for starting spots in 2025. So need two starters. You are acting like they are replacing the entire OL in 2025 with 2 picks (1st and 3rd). Very easily sign a guard/center/tackle and draft another in round two and be set along their oline

also have Floyd and bosa back next year. Hargrave will be a post June 1st cut which very well could be back like eagles did with fletcher cox. Do they need to get better along the defensive line? Yes, but they have cap space and lynch has structure contracts in the past to get guys he wants and bring in depth isn’t going to kill their 2025 cap.

again, did i say they were 100% going to do it? No. what I said was they are a SLEEPER team to do it and lynch/shanahn might believe they are good enough. So their history has shown you that especially at Qb that they’ll consider it. But let’s ignore the fact they gave up a high pick for Jimmy g then gave up even more picks for trey lance when they also had holes on their roster to fill. add on traded away picks for a RB cmc and OT Trent Williams.

You wanna know what I think the Niners do, I think either Aaron Rodgers or Kirk cousins is going to be the starter next year. I think they’re gonna trade away Brock Purdy for a draft pick that has conditions on it that may become more (a 4th that may become a 2nd rounder). Then I think in the 3rd round they’re gonna try to draft the kid like Dillion out of Oregon. That’s what I think the Niners gonna do. However if they absolutely love sanders/ward (who knows right now) that they make the attempt to try and trade up for a franchise changing Qb. they’ve shown in the past they would with jimmy G and lance.

The Niners Center for 2025 is Matt Hennessy.  Trent Williams is almost surely gone.  Right tackle is also open, but puni is the logical successor there, but that leaves a hole at Puni’s  guard position.  At the other guard Aaron Banks likely has played his last down as a 49er and will depart in free agency. so with Hennessy and Puni, that leaves three open O-Line positions.

Williams is gone? Interesting how he just got his contract redone and to release him in 2025 offseason is 33.6 mil against the cap. So that’s BS. He’s back regardless.

They also have puni at RT.

The expectation here in the Bay Area is that coming back from his late season-ending injury is more than likely to result in Williams retiring.

Puni at RT and Hennessy at OC and three open positions.

Also the discussion on the radio here says that Lynch has already dipped deeply into the restructuring well.

I heartily disagree.  He was really poor in coverage in 2022, which was obscured by his high number of interceptions.  He is much more disciplined now and works much more within the larger concept of the Defensive scheme.

The one to maybe keep an eye out for would be Calais Campbell given he can play inside, but even him I’d say is unlikely with Hunt playing well and Huff coming back.

he hasn’t been released yet though

Neither one should prevent us from signing Campbell if he should come available

And yet he is worse in the red zone especially

Here’s another one. Gut your running game by taking a major threat out of play.

Sure... if you think that the only way to have a successful running game is with a running QB taking big hits from opponents and putting your $50M player at risk.

Riddle me this Batman... why is Saquon Barkley's contract so cheap compared to a QB salary?  Is it because running backs take a ton of abuse and hits and have a limited shelf life?  And if it is, why would I want to expose my QB to that kind of punishment while investing $50M a year in him?   If that's the only way to make the running game work, then so be it, but don't put your organization in trouble by investing so much money, especially long term money in the QB.  Get a lower cost, younger version, and have more money invested in a similar style backup for when the inevitable eventually happens.  But don't put your most expensive and longest term contract player into that type of jeopardy.

Btw, I don't believe for a moment that Stoutland is incapable of designing a running game that can be just as effective without exposing the QB like the Eagles do.

This is all about the philosophy of team building, allocation of assets and protecting those assets.  I find a significant incongruity with the length and financial commitment they have made to their QB1 and the way that they design plays leaving him out there vulnerable to be hit and beat up as much as he is.  If he's worth the contract they gave him, then he needs to be better protected.  And if he's not, then they need to find a different solution with the QB position and find cheaper fodder to throw to the wolves.

I really don’t know how good or bad he was in the Red Zone in 2022, so I can’t make an informed judgement about whether he is better now or not.  Given how good the team has been in the Red Zone, has what you see as his deficiencies  meant a meaningful uptick in the opponents’ results?

You are channeling @TEW in your final three sentences.  He has been arguing for that approach for several years.

shanahan doesn’t think he’s retiring. Neither has Williams said he was. Add on giving him the restructure they did they had to know if he was playing at least 2024 and 2025. So again I don’t believe that he is going to retire at the end of this year unless his injury forces him too. But based off what Shanahan has said and niners have indicated it’s not. That restructure looks awful if that were the case. I tend to think cause he got hurt, older and came back slow from it that people make it he wants too. Articles in October and November (espn) saying he doesn’t plan on retiring. I really don’t think he walks away from the type of money he has coming to him in 2025. Now they could use a long-term option for replacing Trent Williams. Frankly it’s why i think they’d draft a tackle and not a guard and keep puni at his guard spot until Williams is done  (https://www.profootballrumors.com/2024/12/49ers-trent-williams-will-not-return-this-season)

also on restructuring go look at the contracts on overcap (https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/san-francisco-49ers) (change it to 2025). Based off OTC if Werner, Ward and kittle all restructure based on OTC it gives them an additional 30ish mil in cap space (8.553 for Ward, 12.45 for Werner and 9.93 for kittle). (they could be wrong but frankly why i say they can restructure and get more cap)

again, like I said to begin with I think they are a sleeper team to do a trade like that and lynch probably sees them in a different  light then most. That doesnt mean i think they do it or what id do. Frankly i wouldnt as i dont love ward or sanders. It means i wouldnt rule them out entirely like i would other teams

I think he’s had his ups and downs.  Several of his 2022 ints were somewhat flukish so I don’t think he’s any less of a ball hawk this year.  Hes made some really big plays, ints included, this year.  He has had his share of lowlights, perhaps the most in the secondary, this year as well.  And getting thrown out of a game while his replacement struggled fairly counts as a lowlight too.

But I do think his level of play has linearly improved since week 1.

The reporting with Barrett slightly changed. He’s going straight to the 53 on the Bucs.

I'm not advocating one way over the other.  I am only saying it is poor asset allocation to invest such much money into the QB and then use him the way they are.  It's not consistent.  Either the QB is invaluable and must be protected... or he's just a cog in the machine and can be used how ever is most efficient for winning in the short term.

I think Shanahan is egotistical enough to believe he can develop another #262 overall pick rather than make another colossal top five whiff (although I do believe Lance would ironically have been a better pick if he landed somewhere else)

Tbh i wouldn’t rule it out shanahan being out of SF after 2025. Frankly im curious if Shanahan and lynch are on the same page about what to do with purdy. I thought grant cohn had a really good insight on how Shanahan and how lynch view purdy and who was responsible for purdy coming into the niners organization.

All of that contract action was before the injury.  Time has a way of taking care of things.  We can only wait and see what happens.

with that said, what are your thoughts about the discussions about the Niners trading Shanahan?

I don’t think it happens but i wouldn’t be shocked if Shanahan is not on board with the direction the organization wants to go and that they look into it

listened to grant cohn and a couple niners podcasters a few days ago have a discussion on things they’ve heard about the relationship and some speculation based on what they heard between ownership/John lynch and shanahan. Some of it ties into purdy. Basically what i gathered from it is that ownership and lynch are more in on purdy being the face of the franchise than shanahan is. Shanahan is much more skeptical. Furthermore possible resentment from Shanahan towards the organization for him wanting darnold to be the guy but ultimately went with purdy. This year purdy without cmc and a stacked team this year couldn’t get it done and darnold is flourishing in Minnesota.

I have always held an opinion on Purdy that now appears to be shared with Shanahan.  Purdy’s small hands are not a problem in good weather, but do present a serious problem when the weather isn’t as small hands friendly.  The issue you bring up makes him a liability even when the weather isn’t good.

i had to laugh when the Blog was consumed by the talk about game manager.  Purdy’s ceiling is as a game manager.

I'd treat it as an old school preseason game and give him a few series if it comes to that.  Let him make a couple of quick throws and maybe one run and then get him out of there.

I don't care if Saquon and the Defense has to do it while Kenny plays game manager.   Just Beat Dallas.  We need Jalen for the playoffs, I fully agree with resting him again this week.  Every time Jalen is not playing, the Eagles find a way to lose the damn game.  Outside of that one Jets game we happen to win without him.  He has ALWAYS been very crucial to this Offense.   There's no way in Hell Jalen doesn't score on one of those turnovers against Washington, that was the difference in us winning that game and losing. Just beat Dallas, lock in this #2 Seed and then Week 18 we can do whatever we want (Unless Minny and Lions lose then Week 18 will be for the #1 Seed).
