Someone refresh my memory: Don’t Howie turn some low round pick into a much higher pick by kicking the can each year on that pick? Something like turning a six into an eventual 3?

Off the top of my head... a few years back he turned 2 7ths into a future 5th. He also made a trade with Washington to get a round higher in a future year.

Not a necessarily a Howie special (I don't know if he was involved with all of the transactions), but one of my favorite draft chains goes:

7th round pick for Bryce Brown

Bryce plays for us for a few years, does well.

Trade Bryce to the Bills for a future 4th

The following year we trade that 4th to Detroit for a future 3rd.

3rd is then traded as part of the package to move up to #2 overall for Carson Wentz

Found the 2 7ths to a 5th:
Traded picks #230 and #248 (both 7th round) in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Houston Texans for a 6th-round pick (#191).

Then flipped that 6th-round pick (#191) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 2024 5th-round pick

Found another one:
Traded a 2024 4th-round pick (120th) to the Dolphins for a 2025 3rd-round pick.

Hope he met with the coaches too.

So what's the cost to Eagles, of Patriots doing this deal after June 1st to accommodate Howie and save him $7M in cap space for 2026 season and making it easier for 2026 roster building. I can't believe that aspect of this is absolutely free.

Technically the 2027 2nd has the same value as the 2028 1st so still, Im fine with the 2nd.

The point is that is no longer accurate since the 5th year option became a thing.

It's really a win win for both. Eagles get the team friendly cap ramifications, Patriots don't have to trade as much as it would take to convince Howie to do the deal and take it all on the chin. I guess you could argue a lesser return is a cost but it's kind of offset with the cap.

Payton is going through the motions until #11 is available. Mann is still 10 so Payton didn't "get" it, he's sharing it for the next month.

Wrong - Hockey didn't exist in Philadelphia until 2020.

Let me introduce you to Dave Schulz, Don Saleski, Moose DiPont, and Behn Wilson.

JFC HE, you are over thinking this.

The reason you see someone get a higher future pick (like a future 4th for a current 5th) is because it gives the team who is trading away the pick guaranteed value. You have no idea if a team was absolute dog 💩 one year will have a great season the next year. (See Washington 2023 vs 2024) Therefore the team trading away the pick to a bad team could end up in a worse position if they trade for a future pick in the same round.

So a first is a first is a first, no matter what year. The only difference is the talent available from year to year.

A first in 2028 is not necessarily equivalent to a second in 2027. An early second is more valuable than a late second and an early second is close to the value of a late first. The added value of a late first - or any first - is the fifth year option and that only if it’s exercised. You can’t convince me that Howie doesn’t break these future picks down on a granular level. Put crudely, a future Jets pick in any round is more valuable than a Rams pick in the same round.

All I’m saying is that the value of a pick one level higher (e.g. first vs. second) a year later is not necessarily equivalent. Good GMs, of which Howie is one, look a little deeper. I would add that a second in 2028 is probably more valuable than a third in 2027 because the fifth year option is not attached.

Or am I full of malorganite?

You know it's slow around here when people spend the whole day arguing over whether or not future picks are more or less valuable than future ones. Both things can be kind of true. In general future picks are worth less than current picks. That being said, when you are a rare GM with job security like Howie you can take advantage of this and get extra value as a result of other GMs being concerned they won't get to use future picks. Also, with the 2026 draft being so bad future picks were actually worth more or were equal to picks this year. End argument.

Man, I forgot how monstrous Hollin Pierce is. Makes Ball look almost regular size.

Until you look at those other OL

#72 has big upper body but the legs are rather thin. Anchoring issues? #93 is more even in body build.

LOL. Time is frozen here til June 1st. That seems like an eternity right now. I am surprised part of the board, isn't riding Cole Payton's D to supplant Hurts, like they did with Strong & McKee. Wait til he gets that 1st completion in preseason. Wooooo!

Since many rookie tryouts walk away with not much more than a jersey with their name on it, it was a righteous move by the Birds to do this.

I'm sure he already has some #2 Akers Eagles jerseys though.

I do not remember the 70's Flyers. Probably my first real memory of the team was the 79-80 team. Schultz, DuPont and Saleski were off the team. My memory was really of Bobby Clarke and Pete Peeters.
