Some people still applying time value of money to NFL picks...which is how we got Jalen Carter and Cooper DeJean because the Saints subscribe to it.

I'm so glad "football guys" still run teams

Didn't we get Carter because teams weren't sure what was happening legally with the car accident and so he just kept dropping?

Yeah...

Part of it but the bigger part was they made the trade with the Saints in 2022 when they traded 2 1st round picks (16 &19) for pick 18 and a third, a 2023 first and 2024 second round pick.

Howie shifted draft capital into future years which got us the 10th overall pick the following year which put us in position to even have a shot at drafting Carter. Our original pick in 2023 was #31 which became Nolan Smith.

The stupid hockey guys who rang the bell before the 6ers game did the worst job i have ever seen.

Was it Cam York or Darth Vladar?

Eagles should officially announce the UDFA signings since rookie camp started. They should have done it yesterday.

Wouldn't that depend on who would end up taking the chance on drafting him? Unless a GM publicly said they had planned to draft him after 10 if he kept dropping?

I remember fans were cautiously happy about the pick because of the talent but then we didn't know if he was even going to be able to play or end up in jail

Well that's ****. So the player misses out on money and the other team gets potentially screwed out of a pick. It seems like teams should be prohibited from doing it.

I'd like to submit as evidence contradicting that notion that Hurts was widely doubted upon entering the NFL by critics that said he didn't have an NFL arm, was too inaccurate (which they also claimed wasn't something that could be fixed) and relied on bad mechanics. There were claims he was a RB playing QB and a gimmick player at best like Taysom Hill. People predicted that several different QBs on our roster would take his job over (sometimes, "by the 1st 3 weeks of the season." )

Sorry, I don't recall any of this as factual. Hurts was anticipated to be a 3rd round pick in the draft, where Taysom Hill went undrafted. Has there ever been a QB brought in that anyone (other than @HazletonEagle ) thought would create a QB controversy, much less take the starting QB job?

The point of trading for future 1sts is that the value can be top 10 allowing you to get a true blue-chipper (Jalen Carter). Even if you didn't want Carter, there were other good players immediately after.

It's always worth it to trade for a better pick the following year. The only reason more teams don't do it is job security. As fans of the team, we don't care about that.

He wasn't dropping to the 30's. Even at 10 he was considered a steal. Without the legal stuff he would have been top 5.

Don't forget Howie traded up a spot for him. He would know better than anyone that teams were sniffing around so he would have more than likely went immediately after if Eagles didn't take him.

No idea who any of them are. There were 2 of them and they Fd it up

2nd and 3rd rd pick could take longer (or not) as that's the area where the guaranteed money has shifted a bit year to year so they could wait to see others sign near the slot

Eagles sign Bernard and Morris.

I know they want to start Bernard at DT because it's easiest to learn. But I actually think long term he'd be better at Edge and drop some weight. I think it's more of a ceiling for athletes like his. You want them on the Edge.

I guess we'll never know for certain. I think Howie just didn't want to chance it. We're more prone to give 2nd chances so it made sense that Howie was willing. Other teams may have been as well

I remember being both extremely excited and very worried lol

I think the noise around Bernard is going to be much ado about nothing. Hope I'm wrong obviously

I can see that being successful on day 3 with a short clock, but a lot of teams call players ahead of their pick due to the limited time to send in their selection.

I don’t see this being successful at all in round 1. I think Pittsburgh just jumped the gun because they expected Dallas was picking defense.

Agreed.

It's a good bet given he was a stone's throw away from Mr. Irrelevant. If he shows anything he might pin down DT5 for awhile, that seems to be the only downside.

What noise is that?

The Myles Garrett comp. The 'I can't wait to see Bernard' stuff from the media. There will be nothing to see football-wise. He doesn't know how to play and probably won't line up much

Probably. I think people are holding him to Mailata standards and forgetting how unlikely that was

And Mailata was a competitive athlete in another sport before coming over. the only clips I've seen of Bernard is standstill dunking.

And a big issue besides 0 experience is these international guys don't love football. They are trying to find a way to use their athletic gifts to make money. I respect that but it's hard to make it and fight through it all if you don't love the game. I think Mailata eventually fell in love with it which again is unusual
