From my perspective, I've seen players like Ali Al-Hamadi (Iraq) IRL, and respectfully to the lad (massively injury prone), there is no way he should be playing at the WC. Some of the Iraq play last night reminded me of upper end L2/mid table L1 standard; if it's all they can do, then that is ok. The WC should be the best of the best to remove teams that just aren't good enough. I've seen some Premier League teams play where you can see them not get out of 2nd gear to get a win, knowing that's all they need to do. France and England's first games showed what happens when a good team decide to play.

If others disagree, no issue, but it's not something I have the energy to sit through. Snobbish? Most definitely 😉

I’m not saying he won’t extend at all. I’m saying there’s enough smoke to this that his future here is in doubt and it’s worth discussing. A couple weeks ago the blog consensus was that it’s a near impossibility.

At the moment, it's not worth discussing. But I agree and always have that him signing is not a forgone conclusion. I'd say he and Hurts are the two guys who are on the clock, so to speak. He has to be our best or close to best defender, play all 16-17 games, and be a top 3 DT in the league this season to get the $45 million that Rosehaus is surely asking for. If he doesn't do those 3 things he either accepts less than $40 million or will get traded.

it’s all negotiating tactics. We see it every year, and unless he pulls a Micah and lays on a table during a preseason game, he’ll get signed

You too are looking at the exception (the weakest link or flaw) and making it the rule. Instead of spending your time looking for and recounting it, why don’t you start with the best of the WC so far. How has that best compared to the best of the round robin phase of past World Cups? Even more important would be a comparison of what the typical or median team play has been.

Using the score distribution numbers again, the 12 three point plus margin games are offset by the 12 draws, leaving the 8 one goal margin games and the 8 two goal margin games as the typical/median examples. How have those gone? Has the quality of the entertainment diminished? England-Croatia and USA-Australia were two of those typical/median games. How did you assess them for the entertainment value they delivered? Or the quality of play they displayed?

Alexi Lalas seemed to bemoan the fact that Philadelphia Stadium didn't have a dome to deal with the rain yesterday... is it a fair-weather sport? While it rained hard in stretches, there wasn't any lightning.

Agreed, that the game had a 1 seed vs 16 seed vibe, the Frenchees were just playing with their food.

Still need a true PG, or at least a bench PG. Wouldn't be the worst thing, but it would be a little disappointing to continue trying to collect guards and suck on the wings. And suck at the backup big positions. And suck basically everywhere.

Draft a better and more talented player at #22 than Jared McCain. McCain is a high floor/low ceiling guy. What you see is what you get. He's too small and slow to start on a winner.

Im not even sure what the point is to sign Carter immediately. He’s not signing for a discount and you aren’t really signing a guy with untapped potential for cheaper. I basically see it as you sign him today to be the richest DT while taking on the risk of maturity or injury issues. Or you make him prove for another year the injury concerns are fine and he is mature enough to handle a prove it year. In the end it’s going to be basically the same deal, maybe slightly more. But it’s DT, this isn’t a QB/WR/Edge where new guys reset the market every month.
