The Titans are one of the worst teams in the NFL. The Jets just went in there and rolled them pretty easily.

If the Eagles don't win by at least 17 points it'll be a bad omen for what's to come.

So it's not as simple as just benching Dickerson and/or Jurgens.

Actually it is just that simple. As they say, "never up, never in”

I have no problem with a change on the line. I really liked what I saw from both Kendall and Lampkin. My only opinion would be to make a single change at this point with Kendall at LG. Keep the problem solving to one variable at a time.

Like @NOTW keeps mentioning here. This was their 1st time playing this system and will see improvement from OL on just that alone. Also, early season getting whipped into shape. This was a hyper aggressive defense and a great test for them this early on. What's great is we have a QB who can mask these deficiencies when they come up. Tanner Brady would have been slaughtered yesterday into 7 sacks and 3 picks. I'm not worried about this OL in long run. Got good depth this year to find internal solutions. The backup OL is as good as it's been here.

But we know we don't want Landon starting if he's gonna play like that. He couldn't move. That was worst OG in the NFL level play. Kendall would have to be really bad to be worse.

Agreed 100%

Week 1 is always weird, and division games are always tough, so a win is a win. And there were plenty of things to like. But plenty to be concerned about as well, and it's time to say thanks and best of luck to one of our favorites.

Offense

  • Overall, the boom or bust nature of the offense simply won't work over the long term. Winning a game, and outgaining the opponent, when we only had 10 first downs and forced zero turnovers...that can't have happened too often in history. But looking at the drives that failed:

    • second drive of game, set back by Jurgens hold and then the 5 yard loss on dumb screen to Lemon

    • 1st drive of 2nd half, -1 yard run and -3 on play to Lemon (theme here)

    • Next 2 drives, sacks and negative runs

  • Let's just deal with it now - Landon Dickerson almost personally lost us this game. He is just unplayable, and we need to stop fooling ourselves. He was a warrior in 2024, but he wrecked his body and it's over. With no guaranteed money left after this year, you make him a post June 1 cut (hopefully he retires) and spread the $23.6mm in dead money out over 2 years (save $9mm in 2027, take $15.3mm in 2028). Kendall is a much better option. This is a test for Nick - will he do what needs to be done.

    • I thought, other than the 2 flags, Cam was better than last year and would have looked better if the guy to his left wasn't a turnstile. I'd give him more time

  • Sorry @HazletonEagle, but Hurts basically single handedly won us this game on offense. The 3rd and 18 conversion saved the game, and he looked quicker overall. The 1st 2 TD throws were both high level - perfect placement to Goedert, and stood tall against a free rusher (thanks Landon) to hit Wicks. Reminded me of the game against Dallas last opening day when he basically willed the team to a win. To put up a 122 rating and 3 TDs with that OL debacle was unreal. And hopefully he'll get more comfortable going forward. Hurts was the biggest positive on offense by far.

  • Hard to judge Barkley when they simply couldn't block. But on the few occasions where he had room, he looked decent. On one early run he basically ran into Smitty and tackled himself...

    • Also, we need to see more Tank

  • Smith and Wicks did their jobs, and Goedert...thank God no one wanted to pay him this offseason. The manufactured touches for Lemon are too obvious. Again, Landon being a turnstile makes it hard to know what could have been if Hurts had more time.

Defense/Special Teams

  • I "think" the defensive line played well despite the lack of sacks - Daniels was under constant pressure and only completed ~50% if his passes. But...they clearly got gassed in the 4th quarter. Part of that is week 1, it was hot, and Washington dominated TOP. Want to see the snap count analysis, but felt like JC barely came off the field (he was very disruptive). Thought Carter, Davis, Ojomo and Nolan played well, Hunt was a little disappointing given all the TC hype.

  • Baun is just absurd. We may need to find a way to keep him after this year.

  • Campbell had a bad mistake on a 3rd and long conversion. Otherwise, I thought he looked solid.

  • Q and Riq completely shut down the outside receivers. McLaurin was a non factor all game.

  • Coop...I think he may have hurt himself early in the game. But, this was a lot like when he played Thielen - shifty vet gives him the business. Diggs was eating him alive. Hopefully it was just a bad week.

  • Felt like our kickoff coverage kind of sucked

Again, a win is a win. And I hate to just make it about one player but...Landon Dickerson is done.

I was very against Landon and Cam getting extended. Both had a injury history that should have stopped any extension

Cooper is being asked to do a lot more this time isn't he? Maybe he's just slowly adjusting or just had a really bad game but he's earned the wait

Week 1 but I was honestly expecting Baun to show a decline so this is awesome if it's a preview of the rest of the season

I don't know wtf Mannion was doing with Lemon but the defense sniffed it all out. Maybe he wanted to ease him in but I would have done it with something that had a chance of actually developing

It shows that the Commanders respected Smith and no one else. The Hurts-Wicks connection did make them pay....but essentially with 1 play. If 1 becomes 2 and then 3, then this offense is going to be off to the races and teams will let up on Smith. If 1 becomes 0 against a defense that isn't bottom of the barrel, then we are in trouble.

Don’t forget that the Hurts-Goedert connection made them pay as well.

lol...blah blah blah....the play was that was called a TE shovel pass. It was not an RPO. It was designed to be a quick hitter based on where the TE lined up. The QB may have been instructed to look off a safety at the start, but that was not a designed play with progressions. The DL was prepared and blew it up.

Lol. Never said anything about RPO. Learn ball.

Imagine playing the Bears like this

In fairness in 2025 when the Bears were implementing their new offense, they kinda did look like this for the first couple weeks. They scored 24 and 21 points. But they had drives that look good or Williams kept them alive with his legs. they had a lot of drives that were really poor that resulted in punts or not a lot of movement. It doesn’t help the Eagles that they didn’t play these guys in preseason. In a new offense, that is completely different than what you’ve run in the past for everyone including offensive lineman it is big ask for them to look great and consistent in week one. If we look like this and it is week seven, then I start having issues as it should be becoming second nature to them.

Frankly, people are gonna disagree, the defense not being able to get off the field in the fourth quarter in crunch time worries me more. Obviously some of it is fatigue and first game as well. But this isn’t the first time we faced the commanders were Jaylen Daniels is extending plays, keeping them on the field and scoring touchdowns in the fourth quarter. in 3 regular season games Jaylen Daniels has played against the eagles, the commanders have scored 43 points in the 4th quarter, which is 14.3 points on avg. say take out that one game in 2024 they scored 22 with hurts out.. Fine take it out, the other two games they’re still averaging 10.5 points against you in the 4th quarter. Again some of this is the offense has to be better so that they’re not fatigue. But some of this also has to be you need to get off the field and make a play in a critical time. Let’s not forget they kinda did stuff like this early in 2024 and 2025. That 2024 Falcons game they could’ve won the game making a play to get off the field and they couldn’t. Chiefs game last year was 20-10 and in 1:24 they went got a TD and thankfully we recovered the onside and got a first. Rams game from last year, they got the lead 27-26 and then the Eagles allowed them to go down the field to get into field goal range to Kick a 44 yard fg. They got saved because special teams made a massive play.

We have a lot to learn about SM but if he does well they need to trade Nick like the Raiders did with Gruden and keep him.

How did that work out for the Raiders.

I'd also add that the OL age/injury situation may have played a major role in Stoutland leaving. Many tried to blame Siri or the FO and interpersonal issues with regards to running the offense. He may have known this group was breaking down and didn't feel the need to damage his brand.

I wouldn't make that bet. He's had bad OL years previously. I think it was more to do with the change in scheme and probably having to shoulder some of the blame for the run game last season.

Interesting to look back at week 1 in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. All playoff teams, but we all know 2 of those teams were outstanding and 2 really were not that good, to put it nicely.

All 4 iterations won in week 1. All of those results were subjectively confusing games. The offense definitely did a better job putting points on the board in '22 and '24 in the opener. Ironically, the defense left quite a bit to be desired in every single one of those games except 2023...which was, by far, their worst defense.

I don't think any of those games were a great representation of the team that followed. Maybe you could argue last year's week 1 against Dallas was.

This has all the makings of an upset. Hopefully it's just a good game for us to recalibrate with another W

yes, and Hunt did an awesome job containing the opposite edge. It looked like a potential read option on the left side (Hunt's right) He jumped out there so quickly he cut off Daniels' running room, but was also perfectly in the passing lane to the guy in the flat that people say we forgot to cover. At the time Daniels had him as an option, he was covered. hunt forced him to progress to the shovel pass option which obviously was stopped by great plays from Carter and Ojomo.

There's no way the Eagles lose. BUT...I also dont see this version of the Eagles as a team that is going to cruise to a lot of wins. I think they'll win a close game on the score board that is never really in doubt on the field, but will leave most fans wanting more.

I don't think they have the talent to just steamroll teams anymore. They have guys that will reliably find ways to stack W's in close games.

Yeah...I am not so sure about that. The only thing the D was not able to pull off was some TO's. Those will come as well as the sacks....

I agree, but that also makes less sense for a guy that is an all-pro and 3x pro bowler. Knees being shot and immobile makes sense. New offense, new scheme...sure....but with all due respect to @just relax , there is a pretty strong common language with OL play and some of the paralysis there...I have to blame more of it on physical immobility/discomfort/failure than pure mental paralysis/uncertainty.

Why would I deserve respect here? I agree with you for the most part. @twistr has a point but I agree that it is more physical immobility than any other single thing. I don't recall a single snap in the game where Dickerson fired out. Not one.

Quenton Nelson is on the last year of his deal. If the Colts continue to lose they may be enticed to move him. He could be a plug and play high level veteran guard.

Plus Jurgens was called for two early Holding penalties that killed drives.

Yup. Maybe my expectations were lower than others. But I figured that they were going to have struggles with this offense specifically in week one and early. This is an entirely new system for everyone. That includes the offensive line. To me not playing them in the preseason, I understand it. But when you have an entirely new system, this is the first time you’re ever using it with your starters and real competition it was going to hurt you. What you are doing in practice is just practice. It’s not an actual game. This is real competition. It is completely different especially with Dan Quinn adjusting to what he’s seeing and what you are doing.

I would’ve been pleasantly surprised if their offense in general along with the offensive line looked great. Now I was hoping that as the game wore on, they started looking better. Frankly was still clunky and the oline still struggled. But if we’re sitting here in a month from now and it still looks like this, then we have to have the discussion. But after a week one with guys who didn’t play all preseason, learning an entirely new system, and the first time they’re actually putting it on the field against actual competition it is not that surprising. Heck I’ve made another post. The bears had this type of problem last year through the first two games. It was very similar. Scored 24 and 21 but it was a couple good drives but largely clunky and not great. As season went on they picked it up. add on at least the bears had Ben Johnson calling the plays for them who’s very good at it. Sean mannion has never called plays so that’s another added layer into this.

35 minutes ago, eagle45 said:

My hunch is that it says something about him.

But the reality is that it's to be determined. Is he a good WR2 who should have more uniform targets and a combination of Mannion, Hurts, and pass protection denied him that opportunity? Or is he a bad WR who broke a long one on a fluke-ish play because the coverages were rolled to Smith?...and he was unused because he should be unused.

We'll find out in the coming weeks.

I can agree with all the aspects of that answer.

Well I was implying that the mental aspect of being an OL is easy. It's not. But I would argue that being an OL in a new scheme has more continuity than a WR/QB/etc.

His usage of hands is like he's playing in boxing gloves. When he bothers to engage, that is. You can surmise from the cut up he's going through the motions out there

I won't know if it's a lack of interest until he's fixing his gloves during a play. I can say he is not able to do what the job requires. I think that is the only assessment the Eagles need to make. I just hope the coaching staff isn't scared of benching him or that Howie doesn't pressure the staff to keep him in the line up. My guess is that he's just not physically able at this point. His body has been through a lot and he probably needs to lose about 30 lbs. to get back be able to move like he did.

Agreed 100%

It's very possible the Eagles have 4 new starting OL next year. And 3 seems likely at this point. Hopefully at least 2 are on the roster now.

The concept of more explosives and fewer turnovers is essential Sirianni.

The DL needs to convert more pressures into sacks. Daniels was able to extend drives with a few scrambles, but mostly from avoiding the negative plays.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but our safeties played just fine. It would be awesome if Mukuba and Epps avoid becoming vulnerabilities.

We generated a lot of pressures but few sacks. I'm absolutely certain that Fangio did not want Daniels running around and game planned for keeping him in the pocket and squeezing it. Going for sacks opens lanes for a running QB, which Daniels most certainly is. Put a statue like Stafford back there and the rushers do not have to maintain rush lane integrity nearly as much.

Just now, eagle45 said:

I don't know. I think pass routes and route running are not unique to a scheme. Just because a WR may have more of a different type of route and run it from a different split doesn't fundamentally change the technique. Dancing is an apt analogy. It's like they are changing the dance floor and not the dance moves. OL pass blocking and run blocking are more like learning a new dance. How they set for pass protection and get to blocks requires different footwork. It's still football but I think it's a bigger change.
