If you take a lot of what Howie said at face value (and I don't) but it was a lot about putting more talent around Hurts to help him succeed. If anything, hints at a more offensive bend to the high picks - wouldn't be surprising but wouldn't rule out multiple picks being used on an OL and/or a WR and/or a RB in the first two rounds

If they only draft offensive players in the 1st round...

No way.

I think we are getting a DL (DE most likely) in Rd 1 regardless of whether we use 2 or 3 picks. Its such a glaring need and aligns with their '"philosophy".

But it wouldn't surprise me, say if 2 of the first 4 picks are on the offence. Gannon's scheme needs LBs but with needs everywhere on the team and despite some really good talent in Rd 1 (Dean and Lloyd), this still may not be the year we see that given how they prioritise other positions first.

Imagine the first two rounds going something like:

  • Ojabo / Johnson
  • Linderbaum / Green
  • Traded away for 1st next year + mid round pick
  • Spiller

Heads would explode without CB or LB or S being addressed

One thing we can say that Howie got absolutely right was his draft moves in the 2021 draft.

Lol at the Dolphins giving their pick to us and holding on to the 49ers pick, which will now be 29 at best.

He made very good trades.

But you look at the talent in this playoff weekend compared to the Eagles. You look at young talent from the last 5 or 6 drafts which should be enough years for the core of your team. What does Howie have to show for it? A few solid players, some depth. But nowhere near playoff level. Who are the star players that would come up big in a playoff game? Smith might get there. Mailaita is playing great. What skill players? What defensive stars?

And we're expecting him to finally figure it out and build a championship roster through the draft?

And that's my issue. Does he hit on some things? Absolutely! But if you throw enough darts you're going to hit the board sometimes that's just how it works. But he misses far too often to build a roster that can be a sustained SB contender.

Posted this in a QB topic but relevant here.

Let's face it, the Eagles as a team aren't anywhere near playoff level except at maybe O line.  They barely squeaked into the playoffs beating bad teams, backup QBs and because the NFL added a 7th playoff team.

The core of the team by now should be built from the last 5-6 drafts.  What has Howie accomplished in those drafts to make this a playoff team?  Every team has a couple of good players, Eagles drafted Goedert and Mailata and a couple other guys who start and are decent players but they lack super stars and big time playmakers everywhere.  With Devonta Smith we'll see how he develops.  In 2-3 years what guys on this roster right now are wowing audiences in the playoffs?

Howie has failed to build through the draft his entire tenure and fans keep thinking "this time Howie just needs to nail this draft."  Quarterback is no different.

They've been searching for a long-term answer at QB ever since McNabb left.  Kolb, Vick, Foles and Bradford never played a full 16 game season with the Eagles.   Vick was here for 5 years but the first year he didn't do much since he was just getting back to NFL shape out of jail.  So really 4 years.

The best they had was trading up a bunch of draft capital and players with 2 trades to get to #2 to draft Carson Wentz.  Carson was here 5 years, started out looking like the answer then only played 2 full 16 game seasons while regressing, suffering injuries and being traded.

"The QB Factory" isn't producing.

It's very hard to find that long-term answer at QB, they don't grow on trees.  But it doesn't help when the GM making the personnel decisions has proven to fail.

The Kolb era was a joke. Fans were posting on this board saying "Let the Kolb era begin!" "Let the Kolb era begin!" "Let the Kolb era begin!"

He plays against the Packers and ****s. Career over lol. Then when Vick is hurt, he does okay as backup so Reid gets rid of him to the Cardinals and later the Bills. He sucked.

Forget 20/20 hindsight because you can do that with every team missing on picks.

But watching Samuel Perrine and Tee Higgins make big plays on their way to the Super Bowl sucks when a lot of fans wanted those players before the draft...and Howie came up with Reagor and Donell Pumphrey instead.

How dare you insult Sproles 2.0.  TATE was over the moon after that draft when these 2 bozos were making the picks.  Wish we could resurrect that draft thread from old TATE.

Some even actually liked Mack Hollins and thought Barnett was going to be a stud.

Well Pumphrey already has a super bowl ring without having to do anything..... So what is your problem again?

If he ignores the defensive side of the ball he should be shown the door, if he doesn't address all 3 levels of the defense he should be shown the door, if any one of the  31sts is an offensive player he should be shown the door and lastly, if he appears on the NFL Network again he should be shown the door......damn attention seeking wuss.

I hear a lot of fans talking about trading one of the #1's, I think that would be a mistake, get you players early so they can get experience, if he selects well the Eagles should be serious contenders for the 2023 season and maybe in 2022.

I'll make this nice and easy bud... He should just be shown the damn door.

We know he won't be fired. Topic title is putting him in the basement...back to Joe Banner role, no say in the draft.

All we need is for him to not nail this draft and set the team back for years. :smoke:

I agree 100%. As for the embolded statement, it actually is working once you accept that QB stands for Quality Backup.

About as well as the calls for Howie to "nail the draft.” 😂
