In addition to this, considering the rash of injuries we have to our o-line every year (and other teams have similar issues), wouldn't you want more quality depth than less?

Depth is huge.  These injuries might help the Eagles figure out the direction they want to go next year.  Dickerson at LG for instance.  Dillard, Herbig and Driscoll all being forced to play will give us a better idea of what they are.  Driscoll looked good last year and again last week.  He's proving to be a player.

Looking ahead, we are going to have some questions along OL in 2022.  I think we can honestly look at the OL now and say we have no idea who lines up where in 2022.

-How does Seumalo recover from his injury?  2022 is also a contract year for him.  He turns 29 half way through next season.  What kind of contract does he get if any from the Eagles?  Does he come back from his injury playing center?

-Does Kelce retire or try to restructure and play a few more years?

-There's no way Brooks is back in 2022 is there?  I'm going to say 100% no chance.  The only guarantee.

-Does the play of Driscoll or Dillard make Lane Johnson expendable?

-What do we have in Herbig?  He's now started 14 games in his 2nd season and he's on his way to at least 7-8 more starts this year.  That's a good chunk to determine if he's a full time starter or not.  He's also a RFA in 2022.  Could he be in line for a mid-season extension or do they slap a high tender on him to see if they can get a pick?

-If Herbig walks is Awoskia ready to step in to his place?

Let's assume the Eagles run it back with Brooks gone.       Mailata/Seumalo/Kelce/Dickerson/Johnson

What if Brooks and Kelce are gone? Mailata/Dickerson/Seumalo/Herbig/Johnson  -or-  Mailata/Seumalo/Dickerson/Herbig/Johnson   -or-   Mailata/Dickerson/Seumalo/Driscoll/Johnson

What if Brooks is gone, Kelce stays and they move Lane?    Mailata/Seumalo/Kelce/Dickerson/Driscoll  -or-  Dillard/Seumalo/Kelce/Dickerson/Mailata

Brooks, Lane and Kelce all gone?    Malata/Seumalo/Dickerson/Herbig/Driscoll  -or-  Mailata/Dickerson/Seumalo/Herbig/Driscoll  -or-   Dillard/Dickerson/Seumalo/Herbig/Mailata

Those are 9 different lineups that all could happen.  There's a small chance that Kelce, Brooks, Herbig and Johnson aren't here next year.  Depth is huge.

His draft slot is now somewhat irrelevant to his current and future role. It matters in terms of a 5th year option. But if he can continue to be a solid LT, and do so consistently, it makes moving on from Lane much easier, as we can shift Mailata over to RT. I imagine much of the same cries will rise up as they did when we paid Lane a LT contract but kept him at RT. But until Howie's restructuring, Lane has been worth every penny of that original contract.

Here’s my problem I think Jordan mailata is a better left tackle then Dillard. So even if I move mailata to RT, I am downgrading at left tackle because I’m not using my best left tackle due Dillard can’t play right tackle. Meanwhile maybe mailata is as good at right tackle as he is at LT however that’s not where he’s proven to be at his best so far in his career. He’s shown to be significantly better than dillard at left tackle when both have played. So I’m potentially downgrading at left tackle and potentially I don’t know if I’m getting the same production level from mailata right tackle

we didn’t draft dillard to just play competently at LT. We drafted him to be what mailata turned out to be. Dillard is going to be stuck behind mailata and lane through at least 2022 with lane’s contract restructure. So when you go to do dillard as the starter at LT in 2023 if (that’s a BIG IF cause i dont think it’s likely) we move on from lane after next year (2022), it’s his 5th year option and he hasn’t proven to start for 17 weeks (unless mailata or lane go down early) of an entire season in the previous 4 years. essentially Dillard’s rookie contract would have basically been a glorified back up left tackle and in likelihood wouldn’t have enough info to give him an extension until he plays in a contract year 5th year option.

Although that would probably be half the roster.

Because it's Jerry and Stephen Jones who don't care

Driscoll has played RT mostly in college and the pros.  He looked tired in the second half.  Trading the third best T on the team would be a mistake.  Do you think Driscoll magically becomes a solid LT?

Not at all.  I just wrote up a long post about all the potential questions at OL next year.

LT or RT just get his man on the field

Well, the Eagles have shown such a tendency towards honesty with the fans about why and for how long players might be absent, I can understand that there is going to be some speculation about what is going on.

And the fact that they aren't disclosing this time should also mean something.   Fans should let it be and not pry.

Yeah we have never had any luck getting players from the Cowboys. And if they are letting him go, there is a reason. And knowing how tolerant they are of bad guys, even though he has a good rep, there must really be something wrong

He sucks, but he's probably still better than our guys

There's a considerable amount of irrational disdain for Dillard for some reason in here.  Outside of one game where he was asked to play RT with no practice and warm up period he's been pretty darn good.

Yup.   Pretty good as a rookie at LT.  Horrific RT experience.  And we really haven't seen him since then until the last two games.  He more than held his own.

The best possible situation for us is Mailata and Dillard become the starters for the next 5-6 years. It frees up cap space and draft capital to build up other areas. If Dillard turns into merely a good starting LT and that’s it, that’s good enough frankly

If we are talking about eagles linebackers it’s not that hard when we only invest a couple thirds ( one left in hicks) and a bunch of late round picks or udfa in close go a decade and third tier lbs it tends to be easy to do so.

Interesting...

Jack Driscoll was just removed from the IR list and wasn't told he'd be starting at RT until hours before kickoff and then went on to have a decent game.  Who knows how much he practiced if at all at RT last week.  From what we were told, he was preparing at RG so Dickerson could be moved to LG.

When Dillard was forced in to action he laid an absolute egg.  One was a 1st round pick who the Eagles used 3 draft picks to get while the other is a 4th round pick.  It's easy to get down on Dillard and want him gone.

RPO's or not, he still had 4 penalties on Sunday so even while his play is improving, he still has a ways to go.  If both of them prove to be solid starters at either T position and one becomes expendable, I'm trading Dillard to save salary and hopefully bring back better return.

Apples and oranges.   Care to take a guess as to what position Driscoll played in college for Auburn?

Yes, that's right... he played RT in the SEC.  In other words, it wasn't in any way a foreign concept for him to play RT, even on short notice.    He also played there last year as a rookie.   Dillard, by comparison, had never played the right side before.  It's not as easy as folks would think to just pick up playing the other side.  If you think it is... try eating some spaghetti tonight, but instead of twirling with your dominant hand... do it with your off hand.  Or just try cutting a steak with your off hand, rather than your dominant hand.

As for the penalties... get out of here with that.   He was run blocking as per the design of the play and the QB was slow to deliver the ball.  So, they called him for illegal man downfield, because there is no penalty for 'slow to diagnose a play'.   If there were, the penalty would have been on Hurts.

I think Herbig is an ERFA next year, isn’t he?

Dillard is a better LT than Driscoll is a RT.  If Lane isn’t available, it should be Dillard at LT and Mailata at RT.  Figured after last year that those could be our bookends for years.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the future OL isn’t Dillard, Seumalo, Dickerson, Driscoll, Mailata.

He's a turnstile when rushers try to use power to bull rush through him.  I'd imagine a large reason we completely abandoned any attempt at a running game these past two games is because Dillard does not have the strength to run block.  He has also had 4 penalties in 2 starts this season.

🥱.  Your ignorance is showing.

They could say that Lane is on personal leave and will return as soon as he is able to do so.  That gives some assurance he will be back. Pardon me for being a skeptic as to what the Eagles might define as personal leave.

There is a stark difference between a good starting left tackle and just competent. I don’t think Dillard has been good. Hes been competent in mailata’s absence. Whereas mailata has been dominant when he’s played. Vaitai was competent when they started him at LT.

Dillard you won’t know exactly what he is as a starter for a full 17 games until 2023 when you finally get the chance cause they restructured lane Johnson‘s contract and mailata is the better left tackle than him today and going forward.

what if they draft a tackle in the next two years. They trust Stoutland build him up so that he is a competent right tackle. At that point if dillard is just competent,  I don’t have to pay dillard to be a competent left tackle. Also I can keep mailata at left tackle where i think he’s a pro bowl caliber left tackle and not even mess with that.  And I’m getting the same competency that I’m getting from dillard at LT but at RT and I have my better LT starting. The eagles didn’t pay $10 for vaitai who I’d argue is competent at LT but not necessarily a good LT

Well, they basically said exactly that.  He left for 'personal reasons'.  The return as soon as he is able is implied.  This is Lane Johnson, and he left on Game day.  He's a gamer, I don't see him leaving because he decided that he needed to be there with his daughter to sell Girl Scout cookies.

Talking about it in a forum like this is not "prying".  🙃

I think most like to know so they can decide if they should hate him for being out or not. Same way you are convinced people hate Wentz for his "personal choices" and have nothing to do with football.

Gilmore still not eligible to play until week 7 against the giants.
