The MLB is a freaking joke if they sign him. They need a cap or every single good FA is going to LA.

Schwarber is damn good and our fearless leader in office will let him walk

Schwarber is amazing.

If they give him what they want the team will probably stay pretty close to the same. It's a no win in more ways that one. Stay the same without better pieces around him or watch him walk for nothing. Best option is to honestly trade him and get two top ten prospects from a team. No way they do that but the 76ers and Phillies have no forward thinking like Howie.

I don’t think they have any option other than signing him to an extension at this point. I’d be comfortable overpaying him on a 3 year extension. $90m/3 years. Something like that. I don’t really want to commit to him past the age of 35.

That said, JT will be good as gone if he doesn’t want to accept a short extension in the $10M AAV range.

Tbh if it was 3 for $90 mil that he wanted then i think it would’ve already been done. Thats a deal the Phillies would take. Imo i think he wants 5 years (guessing around $125-130 mil which is around $25 mil per). If he reaches free agency and continues this pace then he’ll get it from another team. I don’t think the Phillies want to give out a 5 year contract due to his age his last two years.

With Schwarber primarily being a DH though his age shouldn't factor as much into the decision - they need to re-sign him. Harper has come out and said he wants him back, so if he's willing to play ball he'll be back.

Problem is at what price and what length? Some team with money to burn could give him something ridiculous until he's 40. As I said yesterday the next problem if he stays then becomes not having money to put into building a team around him, which is the problem in the playoffs.

Problem with Kepler is he’s essentially what marsh was last year but on pace to actually be worse (although less Ks). They needed more than older version of marsh

Kepler this year

.231/.320/.731 on pace for around 113Ks, 63 BBs, 21 HRs and 59 rbi

Marsh last year

.249/.328/747 50BB 154Ks, 16 HRs and 60 RBI

like that's the main reason why this team was in the dumps for 10 plus years in 2011 because they refused to move on from the vets while their value was high and getting a young great player back. this organization has to be realize this team isnt a world series contender and we have to move on to get better otherwise we are back in 10 plus year rebuild with harper, turner and nola

The Phillies will have a lot of money (~$100M) coming off the books in the next two years with Schwarber, JT, Walker, Casty, Bohm and Ranger. They can easily afford to pay Schwarber on a 3-4 year deal. The question is will the young talent (Painter, Crawford and Miller) be able to adequately step in on low cost contracts?

Agree. I'd trade him personally and get a haul. They never will but that would be a Howie move.

Not sure how much he would realistically fetch at the deadline on an expiring contract, especially given he doesn’t play the field, which will make trading him more difficult. They’d likely receive a top and mid level prospect and some MLB ready depth. A decent return but nothing franchise altering in the short term.

Further, if the Phillies are solidly in a playoff race, there is zero chance they trade Schwarber, nor should they.
