because DD sucks as a GM

IMO, the worst thing to happen to the Phillies this year has been their post-Topper resurgence.

That shot in the arm galvanized them from a bad team to a good team. But they are too irreversibly, unfixably flawed to become a great team that competes for a championship.

They had an opportunity to evacuate resources from a sinking ship at the trade deadline. Now they will be buyers, piling more deck chairs to go down with the titanic.

Their payroll is done. It’s wrapped up in great but aging talents who are battling regression just to maintain. There is no help coming from improvement from players in their 20’s on the MLB roster. And there is no help coming from the farm. They lack prospects in the farm system that have the value to deliver an impact veteran in a trade.

It’s a simple mathematical inequality. The team is good. There are zero resources, prospects, cash, or current players with the ability to deliver improvement. There are no means with which to make the team better.

Tbh the time to go all in was 2023 and 2024. The time to go all in isn’t now. I’d argue the Phillies are the 5th best in the NL. Only way they are going to be top 3 and really 2nd behind the dodgers is to get SP, LHP, 2 bats. They don’t have the prospect depth to pull that off. They have dealt the depth in previous deadlines cause Dave has misspent money in the offseasons or didn’t do enough in the offseasons so forced to deal those guys for a boost.

Dave has about 70-100 mil tied up in players who aren’t worth their contracts or not even here. Alone we have Castellanos, Walker, alavardo and Garcia taking up 57.5 mil. This doesn’t even include Turner who’s been bad, realmuto who’s been as good as the other FAs on the market in 2026 and nola. With them it’s nearly $125 mil and that doesn’t include the tax

They'll try to buy. But the wallet is empty.

Their best prospects (Painter, Miller, Wood, Renteria) won't get them difference making bats or a starter that is better than Luzardo. So there's just no point in trading them.

What is attainable...Bader and a 5th, Nola-level starter who will not be in the rotation, maybe not even on the roster for the playoffs...but who will stabilize the regular season rotation and innings demands. They can get those things. Maybe even someone for the bullpen. They have some non Gage Wood AA prospects they can throw around to make that happen.

That's deck chair shuffling, as we all know. But they'll cough up some prospects who weren't going to amount to much anyway so that DD can justify his job.

I actually think a package of wood and miller would get you a nice bat or a pitcher as good or better than luzardo. How much better is questionable (probably slightly) then again when Luzardo is on his game, he’s a top of rotation starter (last 11 starts since the 8 ER blow up he’s had a 2.86 ERA).

The issue is they don’t have enough to fix all the holes they have. They need a left-handed reliever because Dave in the off-season just gave Alvarado his 9 1/2 million dollars and thought banks was worthy enough of being a high leverage lefty. Which most of his career he hadn’t been. And Alvarado hasn’t been good consistently since before they went to London. On top of that if Keller doesn’t come back healthy, they also need another right handed bull pen arm. They only have Duran and Orion Kerkering. Not sure you trust bowlan in a high leverage situation. So you really need two bullpen arms.

then you gotta go to the back end of the rotation they’re going to need a starting pitcher. I think that’s the most getable. I think a team will give you a fifth starter for a lesser potential upside prospect. However, if Nola continues to only be able to go four or five innings, you probably need a long reliever in there. Maybe Seth Johnson could be that guy because he has been good in the minors this year. but that’s a risk cause every time in the major he eventually implodes.

Lastly, then you need to fix your outfield and lineup problem. Currently, if Trea Turner continues to hit the way that he is, you have a short stop problem. You already have a right field problem. Crawford who’s been up and down probably needs to be replaced if you think you’re gonna beat the Dodgers or the Brewers in a playoff series. If the Phillies were just in a rebuild, you’d let it play itself out and let him get the experience as long term it would suit him better. But since they’re not, and you’re trying to beat the Dodgers or the Brewers, you probably need to upgrade there too.

They don’t have enough assets to fix five or six different holes. Again this goes back to Dave misspent money over the years and this off-season was absolutely ridiculously bad. I said it at the time if you’re not going to seriously upgrade the lineup just going to do the cheap OF hope he bounces back what he was 2 years ago then let schwarber and realmuto walk. Save the money and start building the next core. Instead Dombrowski has done what he always has. Signed a Rp that underachieves on his contract, gamble on a player past him prime to bounce back, assume Nola’s 2025 was an aberration and hope Walker or painter was good enough when Walker sucked at the end of 2025 and painter had issues last year in triple A (why i said should sign Walker buehler who was cheap for depth purposes and could’ve been a long reliever or battled it out in ST for a spot— having a good year). The Phillies probably still don’t win a WS but if they didn’t have 100+ million invested in mediocre to bad contracts they are far better off right now

I think this kid is going to be part of a package at the deadline for a bat or SP. i think teams would want him in a deal if miller and wood aren’t being dealt.

It's great that they're doing this to the Mets but it's depressing knowing that they're about to score 13 total runs over the next 13 games to make up for it
