So yes, you could overpay by trading your better prospects this year when more beneficial in future years (trade or development) for a mediocre below average bat like Luis Roberts. July 29Jul 29 I’d also point out the Phillies traded Hao yu lee for Michael lorenzen. Right now, Lee has been incredible for the last month and a half. He would be playing third base right now for the Phillies instead of Alec Bohm if they didn’t trade him away. And they traded them away for a fifth starter who was a rental and not all that good anyway. Since May 10 Lee has hit .312/.338/.412/.831 (been even better since middle of June).

You have guys like Wheeler, schwarber, Duran, Stott, marsh and a LHP like Alvarado (been better lately and a LH RP so get a mediocre prospect) where you could trade those guys and get a ridiculous haul for all them. And set your farm system up way better for the future than it currently is. the window for this team was the last three years and you missed it. Going all in at this point makes no sense because you’re not catching the Dodgers and you’re gonna be in the worst position down the road by not taking the long view.

Renteria shouldn’t be traded and won’t be.Painter and Miller combined might get you a replacement level 5th starter.I’m not saying they should trade these guys. Only that trading any of them for anything would not be overpaying. They don’t hold special value because they are the "best” prospects in the system if they still aren’t good prospects.

If miller was healthy then sure he would get you that. What a smart general manager will do would is trade for that prospect at a low while giving up a player who has marginal immediate value. They’ve been working him as a starter. adding more innings and pitches over the season to his workload. he is on an innings limit this year. So you saying he is on track to be a reliever they’re not using him as a reliever. Even if he’s not their ace, they don’t need him to be the ace. They have Sanchez and luzardo. Frankly we don’t know if he will or won’t until a couple years down the road in terms of quality as a starter. so unless you’re getting a star player back for your top prospect. you probably shouldn’t trade it for a marginal upgrade which at this deadline is what you’d be receiving. you aren’t getting Skubal as the dodgers (or Tampa) would blow your package out of the water as well as would be bad resource management as he’s a FA at the end of the year and gone. I would love to have Skubal and do that deal but the Phillies offense and their bullpen isn’t good. It isn’t a luxury they can afford for 2 months and doesn’t help their biggest needs.Go look at who is available at this deadline. Show me what player is so great to trade away your best prospect that’s gonna change your fortunes in the playoffs? That player doesn’t exist with this roster. Not including Buxton as he got hurt last night and he is perpetually hurt. So there’s a chance you making that move and he just isn’t healthy when you need him. Those are the three bats that are the best bats available. All 3 of them are rentals and one of them doesn’t have the power he had a couple years ago. Ward is the only one that fits what you need which is an outfielder. But his power numbers are way down so he’s not a 4 hole hitter this year. Paredes would replace Bohm which is fine but he’s also a FA at end of the year. Imo probably have a lot of competition and you won’t have the best offer unless you drastically overpay. No offense rather not overpay for paredes who’s solid not great. Add on not really a cleanup hitter either. Arraez would likely mean moving Stott to 3rd and Arraez is also got no power and just high on base so you still have no one protecting Harper and schwarber.I have no problems trading away prospects if they’re good players who also aren’t rentals that put this team over the top. Hence the Duran trade (albeit didn’t put them over the top as they ignored needing a RH power bat). But there’s not unless you are taking on risk like injury prone Buxton (also older now). Also this team‘s window is closed. They might make the playoffs but they’ve shown you against better teams they can’t win. They are 6–19 against the National League playoff field. Marginal upgrades aren’t changing that. Can say some of those games were in April. That’s true except they faced the Dodgers and the Brewers 9 times in May, June and July and they went 3–6 against them. So still not good.
