It was obvious he was going there. There’s already been rumors that he was gonna sign there as a free agent regardless. That’s why the package is kind of underwhelming as other teams weren’t gonna give up that good package knowing that he was just gonna leave in two months and you still aren’t guaranteed to be the best team going into the postseason.

Should have gotten involved just to drive up the price.

I will say....the Dodgers are just waaay ahead of everyone else in the MLB...from how they get international players, to drafting and their farm system, to their TV deal, to how they structure contracts.......they absolutely are playing chess while everyone else is playing tiddly winks. I hate them (completely jealous) but if the Phillies were run like this, we'd be like "Na, na na, na na". Like I said, I now know what it feels like when other teams/fans complain about Howie and ask, how did he trade for that player, how did he sign that player, etc. Also, MLB has got to be totally pissed, I mean....the Dodgers are making the regular season, and even the post season irrelevant. Why watch when in the end, it won't matter, that's how much better they are than everyone else.

This is very well said. If this was the Phillies we would be so happy. But it is basically pointless to watch the regular season or playoffs with hope of any other team making a run. That’s the worst part about it.

Supposedly they did. Didn’t make a difference. The more laughable part is what the tigers got back. They were asking for two of the best prospects in the sport out of Tampa Bay and Milwaukee. And then settled on what the Dodgers gave them. One of those prospects is 27 and perpetually hurt. Which tells me everybody in baseball knew that skubal was going to sign with the Dodgers in free agency so they didn’t wanna give up prospects for just two months. Along with knowing how stacked the Dodgers are unlikely to beat them so you’re giving up prospects with a bleak shot at winning a World Series

Eh when the mccourts went bankrupt, the court system gave them the ultimate advantage. That means they’re paying less than a team like the Cincinnati Reds, even though now they have the largest TV deal in baseball. That court ruling was absolute BS especially having it last through 2028 (happened over a decade ago) cause you knew the Dodgers were gonna get TV deal with whoever purchased them.

I would add also the exploited the rule in the MLB about deferring money. That was set up for small market teams to be able to keep their superstars when competing with big markets. So if you’re gonna abuse that rule to your gain, then owners are eventually gonna get pissed off and want a salary cap to stick it to you for exploiting that rule. When i mean exploiting j really do mean exploiting as they deferred over $1 billion. Besides the Mets and maybe the Yankees no other team could exploit it to that level because they don’t have the TV deal or revenue money to kick $1 billion down the road and get themselves into affording a playoff caliber roster while also paying that type of money off.

Better tweet explaining it

Holy Crap, the Phillies got Andrew Painter at the deadline!

Maybe. DD has until 6pm tomorrow to trade away our future.

Just saying our future is bleak even with painter. As we have a lot of money tied up into older players and not exactly the prospects to make up for that.

The good news is that we're not gonna have to watch this garbage for another year cause this Skubal deal is 100% causing a lockout over a salary cap

Were the Yankees playing chess when they were buying everyone? LA is just the new hotness and famous people want to to live there now instead of new york. They don't even have to try to acquire these players, they're not doing anything special.

Would it be fun if the Phillies could just buy anyone they want while winning titles? Yea obviously, but they can't. People will point at harper, schwarber, and turner. Harper, sure. But are schwarber and Turner at the levels of ohtani, skubal, betts, glasnow, yamamoto etc etc etc, no.

Pretty good breakdown. There’s some other stuff as well Not really touched upon with mccourt’s going bankrupt

This leaves out the biggest advantage... there are actually TWO structural edges baked into that TV deal, and the second one comes from the McCourt bankruptcy.

When McCourt dragged the Dodgers into bankruptcy in 2011, the sale went through a court-supervised process. As part of the settlement, the court set the "fair market value" of the team's future media rights at about $84M/year with escalators — based on the Fox extension Selig had rejected. That FMV figure, not actual revenue, is what determines the Dodgers' revenue-sharing obligation.

Then the actual rights sold for $8.35B / ~$334M a year.

So while every other club shares roughly 48% of their real local TV money, the Dodgers share against a 2012 courtroom estimate (later bumped to ~$130M) that's a fraction of what Charter actually pays them. MLB couldn't fix it — the settlement was court-approved, and Guggenheim's lawyers called it a core part of the value behind their $2.15B purchase price. An MLB attorney warned at the time it would create "the Dodgers and the other 29 teams." He was right.

Combine the two: guaranteed max-dollar payments immune to cord cutting (your post), on top of keeping tens of millions a year that would otherwise go into the shared pool (the bankruptcy terms). Both run through 2038. That's the real reason they can sign whoever they want — and why they're sprinting to bank titles before the clock runs out.

Should have just played de la Cruz and not sign garcia

Yep. Or, just bring him up in May or June and not trade for Derek Hill.

Not sure how its a foregone conclusion that Skuball signs with the Dodgers in the offseason when we dont know what the CBA will look like. If its similar to what they are playing under now, then yeah sure.

But, what if under the new CBA, there is a salary cap/ floor and they eliminate the ability to defer money? Unless the Dodgers gut their roster, not sure how they could sign him under those circumstances. It'll be an interesting offseason.

Couple things, I’m assuming in the new CBA that the deferred money is going to be brought up and change. Like I’ve said in the past, that was set up for smaller markets to be able to retain some of their stars when competing with bigger markets with no salary cap in place. So that likely gets changed so dodgers are not gonna be able to do what they’ve been doing with the deferred money.

Secondly, whether or not there’s going to be a cap is the issue and why there’s going to be a long lockout. The owners are willing to concede having a floor. just that the floor is relatively low that they offered. if there is no cap, which is what the players want then he’s gonna be back with the Dodgers. Furthermore, if there is a cap implemented then I’m guessing there’s gonna be some amnesty buyout contracts. Which I’m guessing there’s a couple on there that they’re willing to move off of based off their age or skill like Tucker to be able to sign skubal.

I just saw that one way LA can certainly sign Skubal, is to sign him to an extension prior to 12/1. Now, would Boras want him to do that or test the market when the new CBA is ratified? I cant think of any of his clients that signed before hitting the market.

This is an interesting case because you would have to have the knowledge and a feel about whether or not a cap is going to be implemented. If Boris gets the feel that a cap is going to be implemented then it behoove him to get a contract done prior to 12/1. Because if a cap was implemented, he’s not gonna be able to get nearly as much as you have to maneuver within the cap. Right now can pay him whatever you want, defer some money and pay a luxury tax. Then again I really don’t see any owners maybe besides the Dodgers signing anybody before 12/1, knowing that there is a lockout coming and the ramifications that might change after the lockout.

I'm kind of done with this year.

Sick of LA getting away with their exemption status.

Sick of the Phils management and analytics.

Sick of some of the players we have.... might be great guys, but their declining skills / poor skills and some of their attitudes are not worth the money..... looking at you Nola, Turner, Realmuto, Harper

Personally I would 90's Miami the team..... keeping Luzardo, Stott, Marsh, Sanchez, and Scwarber to help set the tone for new upcoming players and even then I am not 100% on those.

Lots of big contracts to trade. And, maybe some no trade clauses.

Maybe we can move one contract in the off season.

For now, DD is still buying.

Buying now would be supremely stupid. This team isnt going to compete with the Dodgers, if we even make the playoffs. Then factor in this team's window is already basically closed with all the older players, it'll be even worse when they're playing again in 2028.

Sell whoever you can, try to get some young prospects back. Set eyes on 2028

They gonna get hottttt

I figured this was BS but the guy has 32k followers and called the Skubal deal before it was announced.
