But $26 mil per on a 4 year deal to a guy that played less than half the snaps, missing a good amount of the early down snaps where it was vs the run...

That's a good move by New England?

Because Milton is your boy...no agenda there?

Milton is the next Hargrave....New England is going to regret that deal in 2 years just like your hometown 49ers.

Pats could afford to overpay…so it was a good move…FOR THEM.

He shouldn’t be up to making those figures. Guy hasn’t even played very significant percentages of snaps. Hasn’t posted any statistical key leverage advantages.

Percentage of snaps is a very poor proxy for impact/value. Even if you do use percentage of snaps, it is statistically meaningful to look at those snap percentages by Quarter and by Half. I am comfortable that Davis's snap percentages are considerably higher in the 1st Quarter than they are in the 4th Quarter. Further the number of called running plays by the 1st Quarter than in the 4th Quarter.

That will happen when you score 160 more points than your opponents do (170 more in the games after the Bye, and another 58 more in the Playoffs).

The impact that Davis and the Run D had was to impose the Eagles will on the opponent, take away their running game, and make their Offense one dimensional. One dimensional Offenses are much much easier to defend.

The bigger thing is the 5th year option doesn’t even go into effect until NEXT YEAR for Davis… We likely never see that 13m cap hit for Davis in 2026

See this is where a huge divide in your logic and mine surfaces. Niners got Hargrave taking them to a Super Bowl season. Should have won a ring. Absolutely take that shot going ‘all in’….like the Niners were so very clearly doing. Weakened us their NFC competition while they were at it.

I don’t buy into being too frugal in that situation. Don’t clam up and get cheap the season expectations are set so very high to win the Lombardi. Worst is going bargain basement shopping instead of paying up for the outside key piece making a SB game appearance difference maker…ideally SB champion conclusions. Pay up to do everything possible to win that SB when such an obvious universally considered contention season arrives.

Overpay going ‘all in’ …suffer that two years after contention price clearing the cap. I see nothing wrong with making decisions according to this way of thinking. Pretty standard traditional NFL approach I believed.

Niners take away from us Hargrave. Weakens us…while adds to them. Especially how he was a problem for them to deal with. Picture perfect Niners team I told you all along was going to that SB. You completely weren’t seeing it…some how. Hindsight backs me up…mostly. They did make that SB….but didn’t finish the job…it was right there for their taking though.

Howie will restructure or let him walk. he is young enough to warrant another 4 year deal. I love how we stuff the run and force teams to throw into our ridiculously effective secondary. Pick your poison LOL

Why? Either you win it or you don't. Like we "should" have won the SB we lost vs KC

Mukumba just made that more difficult too

Milton to the Pats makes all the sense in the world. They don’t have a talented roster. They had top available money to spend in a weak FA class. Hired a D HC in Vrabel. Players aren’t jumping towards the Patriots to play cheap looking for a ring. They need a huge culture boost. Milton has been a consistent hard working improving player each season. In his prime…developed as ideal as possible in our Dline. Milton wasn’t signing that old player on the decline for his name on the jersey. They got a good hard working culture raising player. Total win for everybody there:

Poaching happens to every team every year. We got Bark, made us better Gnats worse. It happens league wide annually. It's how you fill in the gaps when you lose more than you gain. We're in good shape for next draft also with the comp additions

They will stink until they find QB1. Belichick had Brady, he was the franchise, not Bill. Milton is not enough to turn that loser franchise around. He will be DOA up there if he wanted to be on a contender

Not really high on him enough to look at him as a clear starter. Career versatile backup depth piece for Fangio for four years…was how I judged the pick. Not sexy…more just practical.

For me, DT is a rotational position. We have had an extended discussion over in the Blog about what constitutes a "starter” in the NFL generally and for the Eagles specifically. We all agreed that in 2024 there was really only one DT starter … Jalen Carter. Working in conjunction with Carter were three role players … Davis, Williams and Ojomo.

2025 appears to be headed for the same scenario, with Davis, Ojomo, and Robinson all coming in at around 40% of the snaps. I expect there to be more Carter, Davis, Robinson, Edge fronts this season than there were Carter, Davis, Williams, Edge fronts on running downs.

See this I’m fine with….for players earned and worthy of it. Those should be fairly easy. Cam and Jordan Davis should be more negotiations needed really. Shouldn’t be top paid contract players at this point. Kind of bending over and taking it from those two on their extensions.

Clearly Howie, Stoutland, and Fangio disagree with you.

Bills really improved over the last years, Miami NAH, Jets NAH, but at least we got away from the Pats "6 free games" a year

Yeah…but you comparing the crappy Giants isn’t near as equal. The Niners went to the SB the season directly in between our two trips winning the NFC. They paid for much more than just the player gained. Very directly weakened one of their most significant roadblocks as well. Much higher levels of poaching in that whole scenario. At the highest of levels in fact.

We went to the SB after we took Bark off the gnats? SF was good only when Caff and all the WR's were at 100%. Then the wheels came off that wagon

Eat that clock and force the opposing Defense to get exhausted. Then have our Defense force a three and out by neutralizing their RB running game, and force their Defense back on the field with short rest.

Love to always do all of this. But I believe we are capable of even more. We can kill you against whichever way you choose to defend us each play. An O that can do that is five times as deadly!

SF tried to buy a SB and it failed

Calcaterra is a good move blocker, so the Offensive scheme gets tweaked so that Calcaterra is in motion on a high proportion of the called plays. The ball is snapped at the point where Calcaterra in motion has progressed from his End position all the way to behind the Guard. That way he hits the end of the line just as the Edge is taking his first steps … and lays a Wham block on him. Or alternatively he leaves the Edge to Mailata or Johnson and continues on ahead of Barkley (or Hurts) as one of the lead blockers clearing out the second level.

See I really appreciate this post. Detailed specifics from a knowledgable Birds fan! Thank you!

Gotta be on the field to earn these few premium contracts we can afford to pay out. Paying Davis Saquan money here.

I’m a numbers guy … 800 in my Math College Boards … and a Wharton MBA, and for all 22 positions on the field, the same dollar amount has distinctly different meaning. RB is not seen across the NFL as a high leverage position. I personally don’t agree with that perspective, but that is what GMs and agents have bought into.

Further, RB is a high wear and tear position, so there is much higher risk that the agreed to dollars will go to an injured (or worn out) player who doesn’t see the field. That risk of no ROI is factored into the negotiations and agreed to salary.

Same question with EVERY ROOK that enters camp isn't it?

Many rookies have traits to rely on…questions in other areas.

He really didn’t impact much at all after the first half of his rookie season. All the way up until now still hasn’t EARNED it. Still talking about his potential being more fulfilled. The one dimensional factor surrounds his skills though so far. Obvious rushing downs. I’ve been discussing Jordan Davis extension a fair amount lately if you caught any of that. I was straight actually even giving in to Jordan Davis of paying two extra mil a season….just for the Jalen Carter positive effects he supplies.

You need to do some research into the proportion of 3rd Down and long situations that the Eagles Defense produced in the games after the Bye. That is the metric of how effective the Eagles run defense was at taking the opposing RBs out of the game.

Of course it’s not that easy … as Hassan Reddick sacking Brock Purdy is perfect evidence for. However, on most passing plays the TE will be going out into a passing route rather than staying in to pass block. They will often chip block on their pass route, but rarely inline block in those plays

Wham blocks from players in motion is anything but a gimmick. It is a staple of a good rushing attack.

The way I see how it works ideally is if needed that player has to pass block

It's still about transitioning, round 1 or 5. You take your best shot, there are no guarantees although your chance of success is higher and drops each round. This is why Howie is so good. We have a great staff that has little problem getting players to transition. Some you just can't do alot with as you saw their peak in College. Some you need to take added time with. Same for every team

Ok.... I'll try explain better.

In our current offense... Hurts passed 20-25 times per game... so on " most plays" the TE doesn't really go in the route.

It's why we are having this discussion and you are getting responses from 3 of us who are looking at the blocking aspect. Otherwise if it was 7 years ago with Doug, Wentz/Foles... nobody was really caring about Ertz as a blocker.

You follow. The " move " blocker, the route runner...etc. great technical football points, but it skips over the fact of the function of a #1 TE in the current offense.

I wouldn’t place expectations on this season being as lopsided as this past was. That was alltime rushing season from Saquan. That won’t be happening again. Passing attempts have to rise. Terrible way of thinking and going about looking towards this squads future.
