Funny, the PE.com Twitter feed hasn’t mentioned the mascot race between the Pitt Panther, the Nittany Lions, the Steelers mascot and Swoop. The film is hilarious. Swoop looked the William Hurt character in Body Heat, who jogs to the end of a pier and lights up a cigarette. Needless to say, Swoop was a distant last place finisher.

They should have let Gritty race them.

Yeah, that was a good analysis.

This was one of my favorite risk adjusted picks. I don’t want to undersell the problems — Warner did a good job of showing how his mechanics, footwork, inexperience, etc. need a LOT of improvement — but the negatives are all things that hypothetically can be fixed. Will they be? Who knows. Probably yes, but also probably not enough to get him to the point of being a starter.

That said, the innate traits of a starter ARE there. He has the raw arm strength. He’s big and fast. He ran a high verbiage offense, so we can assume he’s smart enough. If he can really clean up the mechanics and get dialed in for a couple years of hard work, he has a real chance to become a legitimate starting level QB. In the 5th round, to get a QB with those kinds of physical tools with a clean bill of health and no negative intangibles, is a great opportunity.

It seems like outside of Lemon and maybe Stowers, this is what our whole draft was about. Bring in some guys with the physical traits to become a truly valuable asset rather than a high probability replacement level player. This is going to be an interesting group to watch over the next few years because the expectations are pretty low but all of the guys have the talent to be good players.

If we can somehow hit on 2 of the guys besides Lemon and Stowers this could be a surprisingly good class.

The key with drafting these kinds of players from rounds 3-7 is having a plan for depth. I would say with confidence these boom or bust players we drafted this year have a higher chance of becoming good starters than what you'd see from more traditional draft picks in that range. The issue, of course, is that they are more unreliable in populating the 53-man roster with reliable depth.

If you are either confident in the depth you already have or in your ability to acquire depth through other means (I'd wager that Howie spends more money annually on one year contracts on flawed vets with playing experience than most GMs)...then there's no reason not to take this approach to the draft after the first 2 rounds.

My son is a senior in HS this year. All of his classes are either AP, Honors or IB. AP and IB classes are on a 5.0 scale. Honors are on a 4.5 scale. He will have like up to 20 college credits. Still will not graduate early because he wants to study aerospace engineering.

Smart kid who obviously worked hard. You have to be proud.

Pavia got an invite to Ravens rookie minicamp. He didn't even get a UDFA offer. It's not entirely surprising based on his physical traits but his attitude has to be extremely off putting for teams. He does seem like a hard worker but he's probably not likeable enough to be a back up QB.

Thanks! He definitely got his math smarts from his mom. His ability to leave socks and dishes in random places are the skills I have passed onto him.

I am more concerned about the safety support

Didn’t realize how cherished Sydney Brown was. Seriously, while the Eagles are less two thirds of the Ss that started last year, Sam arguably beat Brown in PS last year. Since then, they added Epps, who beat Brown as a starter.

So the concern is we lost Reed. I think his communication skills were great but he was not that great of a S. Howie has added Wisneiwski. (He’s interesting. On tape, he plays faster than his 40:time. I think he’s like Baun. Good instincts and jump. Like Reed, best downhill).. He added Carter last year at the trade deadline. You really should check out Carter’s tape from college, where he was a S. Mukuba has a season behind him. As for Sydney’s role, arguably J T Gray is better. Eagles have been cooking Castro-Fields for a couple of years now. I wonder if that has worked at all. All three UDFAs are probably Ss. (Reed was an UDFA). AND the offseason isn’t over. A wild card is Brandon Johnson. Looked good last PS. Definitely has nickel skills. Oh yeah, and who was the starting S next to Reed in base? Some allpro named Coop.

Comp pick thing expires soon, forget the exact date. Some free agents still available:

Kevin Zeitler - OG

Dalton Risner - OG

Mekhi Becton - RG/RT

Joey Bosa- Edge

Haason Reddick – Edge

Julian Blackmon – S

Fits my kids experience. But mandatory health/gym classes usually keep the kids from graduating with a 5.0. Most extra curriculars do too.

Loser Michkov with a goal and 2 assists so far.

He's so good this playoff series! He's so fast you only see flashes of him. Really good with the puck, limits turnovers, keeps penalties to a minimum. Busty!

Blackmon is under contract with the Saints.

I could see us adding him just to help with installing the offense.

Steve Palazzolo(formerly PFF) really liked the Eagles draft. Had Lemon and Stowers as two of his favorite pass catchers, likes Bell and Payon. But he really likes Morris, Wisniewski, and James-Newby a lot. Said he thought James-Newby was gonna be picked up by a better team in the transfer portal and Morris was his favorite day 3 guard.

When was the last time the Eagles got cooked because of mishandling the safety position?

Nate Allen and Jaqwan Jarrett were bad, stupid second round picks...but their safety situation always works itself out.

My evaluations and expectations are anchored by my own stubborn opinions and by track record. Their track record at WR is poor. If you combine a prospect I don't like with their track record at that position, I'm not going to just assume they'll be better than a disappointment. Their track record at getting viable safeties on the field with minimal investment is excellent. I see no reason to panic when they have a second round pick, even if it's one I wasn't in love with, a veteran nickel CB who has played at an extremely high level in this league (Carter), a veteran who filled in quite well at the position last year (Epps), an interesting rookie draft pick...that's going to work. And if it doesn't, you've got the most versatile defensive player in the entire NFL (yes, I'm ready to call Coop that) available to backstop it.

Blaine Bishop

We've got a radically redesigned offensive scheme, an entire WR corps capable of delivering quick underneath windows of separation without the speed to soften defenses for bigger, deeper windows, and a QB who is notoriously uncomfortable with exactly that.

If this offense clicks...or if it doesn't...I don't think we are going to be pulling out our hair over the safety situation once the season gets going.

Blaine Bishop

100% correct. And that was a long time ago.

Checked out JT Byrne the TE invited for a rookie tryout. At Georgia Tech last year, which runs the ball. A blocking TE. His agility scores are putrid and he is slower than Micah Morris.

Cooper DeJean will be playing safety in base which 20-30% of snaps. Mukuba will play the other safety. I'd still like to see someone better than Epps which I think will happen but it's also not the highest impact spot

And I don't think Becton every cost comp. He was cut

Blackmon on Saints, Risner on Bengals and Becton never cost comp. Might need a new list :)

Speaking of GPAs....why give out draft grades if you don't give one lower than a C?
