Let's assume for a second that Hurts isn't the guy. That may offend the sensibilities of the pro-Hurts crowd, but just entertainment for a minute just to arm-chair GM it.

I'm not incredibly excited to watch this team either earn-in or trade-in the resources to get to a top 5 pick for a QB. I assume the common sentiment is start with the AJ picks and try to roll up the resources to trade up as high as possible.

We all know Howie knows how to compile a talented roster. Teams with talented rosters that find a way to get their starting QB through alternative pathways tend to just be better off these days. (Eagles, 49ers when they were better, Seahawks).

I don't know if it's Mckee (that last game was bad, but I loved him as a prospect and his very little exposure before that), this new guy from NDSU that I don't really like, or some 2027 QB that can be had after 20 or so.....but it would be really nice to address that position without a top 5 pick. That's a huge competitive advantage.

I assume our RT of the future is in 2027 so that would suck

You can win a SB with an average QB if your defense is full of talent. Not sure what happens when Vic leaves though

Who "didn’t like Blakenship”? Being honest about his play isn’t dislike. There was a lot to like about him. Good instinct, more ballhawk than expected, good communication in the back seven (although Baun gets some credit there too). But he had limitations too. He got exposed a bit with Mukuba’s rookie mistakes and Jackson’s erratic play last year. Not every player needs to be a first round AllPro, but recognizing that isn’t dislike.

Plenty of people trashed his play last year. Some were saying he should walk in free agency, said he's easily replaceable. I'm only referring to those type of people. Most fans liked him.

I can get a computer these days for about what my "scientific” Texas Instruments calculator cost me back then. Of course, my keyboard was an electric typewriter, which my folks thought was extravagant. Renting books online today is cheaper than books were for me.

Yeh, I was really just being a smart a$$.

We were very lucky with our two oldest, both scored very well and were able to get significant financial assistance (scholarship) at Ouachita Baptist. My daughter actually got fully scholarshipped after her Soph year. My son, scored just under the threshold to get the max scholarship, I told him to retake the test so he could max it out...he didn't want to...it would have been worth $2k/yr for the entire 4 years. So that $8k...he paid. They actually paid for their schooling, we helped quite a bit, but we weren't about to cover the entire cost, they had to have a skin in the game. It worked out well, they both ended up going to U of Arkansas on a Masters program that paid them enough to live in Fayetteville and cover all of those expenses for two years. We just kept them covered with cell phone, vehicle, insurance, etc.

My son had some crazy stories about the athletes he had to teach as part of his work at UofA, pressure from advisors and coaches to pass kids that never came to class, he wouldn't do it. They went above him to the Director/Dean of the department to get passed, these were freshmen level english/writing classes...not hard stuff, just have to do the work, crazy.

I think the colleges and lenders are screwing a lot of young people when it comes to the true cost of education.

The trainwreck potential of the 2026 Patriots makes a 2028 pick way less appealing. Their 2027 1st could be a game changer for us.

True.

Plus there are so many potential first round QBs in 2027 that you might be able to flip that Pats pick into 2 or 3 more first rounders.

This trade will be interesting. Hard to expect the Patriots to do anything in good faith. I also don't expect Howie to tolerate getting taken to the woodshed.

I really don't think they'll part with a 2027 1st round pick unless there is almost unstated, implied extortion that this is the only path that circumvents a tampering investigation. Otherwise, I really think we are looking at a 2027 2nd and a 2028 3rd.

That'd probably describe me. Blankenship could get the occasional turnover and was a willing tackler, but I don't think he's very good in coverage and he's not a fluid athlete -- generally travels in a straight line.

Is he a better player than Sydney Brown? Yes.

Better than Epps? Yes.

He's replaceable for sure; we'll have to find out how easily.

What's wrong with 2028?

Personally, I am completely cool with it being a 2028 first rounder, for at least three reasons:

1) The notion that an earlier year pick has more value than a later year pick is illogical, and frankly just silly.

2) There is actually reason to believe there is a window right now where a 2028 pick may be more valuable than a 2027 pick, because players are staying in college longer because of the NIL money they are making. That is the reason most cited for why this year's draft class was weak, and that will probably remain true for next year's draft, but eventually, probably around 2028, the number of players leaving will catch up with the number that have been able to defer leaving.

3) There is reason to believe the Patriots' picks in 2028 will be higher than in 2027 -- Maye can extend his contract after this coming season, so he will start taking up more of the salary cap, plus the Patriots will be another year removed from a team talented enough to make the Super Bowl. (And I'm not buying the "Vrabel weakened by the adultery thing, Patriots 2026 train wreck" theory that seems to be going around.)

Back in the day, the 76ers had a point guard named Henry Bibby. Bibby played for the storied UCLA program coached by John Wooden. In his four years there he did not attend one class. Not one. And he got his diploma.

Thanks. Very encouraging for a 7th rounder. He's going to make the team and may play.

Love hearing Zink call out "Bibby" in his shortened, high-pitched way.

I think you are missing the potential to add a veteran in free agency or through trade.

Just look at how Darnold worked out for the Seahawks or Mayfield in Tampa.

If you have a talented roster, adding a reclamation project can actually turn out really well. So many of these guys get put in terrible situations with poor coaching, no talent around them, and constant organizational dysfunction.

A well run organization will do wonders for a QB. Heck, we’ve seen it here with Mike Vick. Even Hurts you could argue would not have accomplished nearly as much on most other teams.

Well that's the question I'm posing. What veteran QB's are poised to be available in the next 2 years....what NCAA QB's look interesting that aren't going to catch that top 5 pick wave?

A listing of remaining free agents.  A couple of observations...

  • They list BG as a free agent.  The team's website has him on the roster.

  • There are only three other former Eagles on the list - BVS, Okoronkwo, and Adoree ' Jackson.  Very few relative to other teams.  Are we so talented that most of our guys find homes elsewhere?

Needs to be 32 or 38 so it's easier to hide Coop in the defense.

Yup...my youngest is going to my alma mater. It was a hidden gem and a major party school, but nowadays its popularity has exploded and so has the housing costs. I paid 175 to share a large room with my roommate in a place on the ocean bluff. My youngest is paying 1200 a month to share a room with 2 roommates 2 blocks from the bluff. Still a fun place and still a major party school.

Yup...the rumor always was how Bill Walton made extra cash from UCLA for shoveling snow.
