It’s only slightly less than $1M of cap space they opened up for this year. The move suggests more about next year. They already have most of Browns dead money hitting next year, this could be to accommodate additional dead money they didn’t anticipate like Johnson or Dickerson. It also suggests Howie doesn’t plan on extending Nolan SmithHow i interpreted it. Gotta remember he likely is getting contracts done with Q, dejean and hunt. Hunt is entering the last year of his contract next offseason. Feels like a good way of creating some extra space for next year knowing what’s coming.
September 16Sep 16 Will need to see how much under center they run and play action if/when the OL starts to play better. If the OL gets their act together and they still don't run as much under center or play action than was advertised then I think it's pretty safe to assume that Sirianni is mandating a lot of what he wants them to run on offense stays.

The most concerning think though was apparently they primarily used Smith as the X, and points out that Smith's efficiency drops of significantly in that role. Adds a big caveat that the bad OL play limited what they wanted to do. But that info about Smitty as the X worries me a bit. Seems like a bad fit.So, I did a run-through to count how they used Smith and I came up with this:X - 23 snaps.Z - 22 snaps.Motion - 7 snaps.I may be off a snap or two but it's close. It's worth mentioning that on 8 snaps at X or Z, another WR motioned outside Smith, pretty much forcing the DBs to switch coverage responsibilities. Also, Washington never jammed Smith at the line, not once.

If they do decide to extend him after this year, the structure would look similar with a large bonus payment and minimum salaries. All that would happen is the bonus in 2027 would likely be a little higher as a singing bonus. It really means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

To me, this feels more like a Barnett where they will keep and pay him his 5th year option but they want it to be more cap friendly. Then after the 5th year they will let him walk.
September 16Sep 16 Yeah, Baun is a stud. I know people assumed he'd be let go next year because of the contract, but I don't think they can or will do that. He's too good, too valuable, too impactful.

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if they extend neither guy this offseason if neither of them has a blowout year. Keep them both on the books cheap for 2027.
