It will be Kendall at LG, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Lampkin is starting at center in a matter of weeks.

Would, and wouldn’t, surprise me.

If he’s not performing, and injured, sit his butt down. BUT, we’ve seen what this organization has done over a couple of seasons now with a situation as such. 🏄

I'm going to sound like an old out of touch idiot here, but I think mobile QB's have stunted the position. We are going on 40 years of mobile QB's being called "new" and the next generation. And every time there is hype that mobile QB's are going to take over...teams fell back to their pure pocket passers and yanked their running QBs....UNTIL....the current generation of QBs. Now, it finally, actually happened. Dual threat QBs are the standard.

And without going nuts and referring to year-over-year scoring data, passer ratings, etc....it sure feels like pass attacks across the NFL are more erratic, more error prone when called upon in high volume, and generally less effective.

I think it's just a simple mentality and developmental issue. If you are a talented runner and your coaches frequently ask that of you (as a qb)...from high school to college to your early years in the NFL...in the name of winning, it's just going to be easier to tuck and run than to scan the field longer for deeper progressions. QB's that don't run, from a young age, maximize every last ability and nuance to orchestrate and target their weapons in the passing game. Peyton, Brees, and Brady looked more like we do surfing channels (not that anyone does that anymore with streaming) than modern QB's do with their happy feet and calisthenics when fighting themselves in the pocket. One may argue that makes them easier to defend. I'd argue their passing numbers suggest otherwise.

Here's a different take.

Defenses are just more complex, the athleticism of the back seven, the move two 2 safeties means big plays are harder, and those LBs running 4.5 instead of 4.8 means underneath windows are a lot smaller.

So it's just harder to play QB.

Meanwhile, too many QBs leave college early then are rushed in the NFL. Used to be a QB would start 50 college games then redshirt for a season, which meant he started his pro career with plenty of experience.

Now mobility is part of the problem b/c it allows young, inexperienced QBs to win games with their legs so they play earlier and get away with not being able to read defenses.

But Steve Young was as mobile as any QB today, however, he served a long apprenticeship, by the time he started he was a complete QB who used his leg as an additional asset when needed.

We're seeing that with Hurts, he still runs when needed, but he's a QB who runs, not a RB who throws.

I’m growing tired of Landon Dickerson & forcing himself to play injured - and bring the OL down. It’s been like 3 seasons straight now. It’s time to move on.

Also why isn’t Becton on this roster?

Seems like Mailata - Jurgens - Kendall - Steen - Lane.

Finally caught up. (Son got married on Saturday and I have been catching up since Sunday between watching games).

Thoughts on the game

  • Agree with Landon, he was a liability. Bone bruise is no joke. Ask Bo. The only cure is to let it heal. Whole OL looked a bit disjointed at times but every year since Nick stopped playing starters in PS, it looked like this. A bit less so when they had practices against two other teams. Should go back to that. New scheme also played a factor. Not sure, even when Landon comes back that he is a good fit for this blocking scheme.

  • Speaking of not playing. Vic needs to insist the D get PS snaps because just like blocking a sled is different than blocking a live person, tackling a dummy or a doughnut is different than a live person.

  • I think the running game will improve as the season goes on. Hopefully we see more Tank.

  • Epps is a better S than Cooper at this point. In fact, he is the best S on the team at this point. Worse game of Coop’s as an Eagle. My BIL is a Texan’s fan and here for the wedding so we popped on the Texans game. Reed, oof. For all the despair in here about S.

  • Epenesa cannot seal the edge. Need Greenard to get his strength back and get on the field.

  • I will give Lemon slack as he has barely practiced. See the potential.

  • That said, seems criminal not to throw to Darius Cooper. He is already a better gunner than Sydney on STs. He blocks better than AJ and has good hands.

  • Goedert should be a hometown hero at this point. Mundt is solid at blocking

  • Why no Robinson? I would rather see Robinson than Epenesa at this point.

  • Q and Riq showed up.

  • With all due respect (very minute) to @HazletonEagle , Hurts put the team on his back and carried the O. His long ball is elite.

  • Carter did similar on the DL. Hope Davis isn’t banged up.

  • I’d play Trot2 over Campbell.

  • Mann has figured out how to directionally kick. Kudos to that garbage can. Need to check in with @FranklinFldEBUpper ’s ST blog to see his write up. (I don’t venture out of the Blog much but his write ups are must read.

  • The pessimists in the Blog forget every year how rough the first game looks while the starters get in football mode and the D remembers how to tackle.

  • Finally, a Win and a Division win.

For the division

  • Parker is getting criticized but being in Ravens country down here in the South Central, I can say Rickard is a beast and the combination with A fresh Skattebo is hard to stop.

  • That said, can’t see how he and Dart remain healthy and not worn down.

  • Nabors is back. Likely was a great signing.

  • Once the refs quit calling phantom DPI on the gints, the superstar (Collingsworth right before I muted him description) push off Lamb and Pickens kind of disappeared and Dak dakked.

  • Those giant LBs (pardon the pun) are going to be a force. But the fact the cowpads could exploit their IDL shows they really miss Tyler Smith.

  • Sonny Styles was impressive. Lack of depth may be an issue for the commies

  • Daniels needs to run but won’t hold up.

The super team Packers and Rams are 0-1. The top two AFC teams from last year are 0-1 and looked bad. I think too much is being attributed to the travel approach for the Rams. Mahommes look like crap last night throwing long. That mutes Worthy and Rice. AR ran the ball and did not abandon the run. Can teach an old dog new tricks.

Kendall was the second rated C by most draft pundits but needed strength. If Morris can keep his pads down, he could be a beast.

Tryout Tuesday. I expect some roster adjustments will show up tomorrow. Always say, while Howie is never done, the true 53 is after the first game.

31 teams gained a first down on a first down play last week

Only Philadelphia didn’t. My assumption is it’s mainly due to how conservative we were on 1st downs

The snap as to the play clock stat is garbage. When a team is trying to kill the clock, they deliberately do that. What’s real is time to the LOS from the huddle. Looked much better on Sunday for the Birds.

18. Philadelphia Eagles (17): They're 6-0 in openers under HC Nick Sirianni and QB Jalen Hurts. And whatever the skeptics − hand raised − might think, Philly has yet to miss the playoffs with that duo, either.

I’m not sure they’re true, but there were rumours all over the internet that he went into camp out of shape last year. The Chargers released him in March after a disaster of a year. They were psssst at him. Given the fact that the Chargers didn’t make an effort to work with him this year, and nobody signed him, those rumors are believable.

One may argue that makes them easier to defend. I'd argue their passing numbers suggest otherwise.

There’s a ton that go into these things. Think of the NBA and the 3 point era. Having the spacing and optionality make it easier to penetrate the defense.

Having QBs who can use their legs at a high level add new pressures and systems to defenses that statue QBs couldn’t. It’s almost a requirement anymore for a QB to be able to get out of the pocket and pickup 10 yards in a scramble. Part of this is the evolution of the player and defensive schemes.

That 2000’s TB Tampa-2 team would be obliterated by a lot of mediocre QBs today. Any pure man-heavy defense would be obsolete with mobile QBs. So new defenses and new disguises come, with new responsibilities, new reactions, new brackets and shells etc.

Bringing in zone-reads and RPO’s have had a big change on how offense and defense is played, and these become much more scary with a QB who can run.

To be fair - Black people couldn’t vote until 1965 in America. The "dual threat” QB was a derogatory term of sorts around black QBs not having enough intelligence to succeed at the position (similar to limited black coaching opportunities). So it’s been "40 years” of the mobile QB warning - but really the league has to live in the world that it’s set in. Which took time to give more and more people of color the keys to the franchise. This may even be shown with the bias toward Josh Allen - who’s everyone’s favorite QB, and THE standard of a modern QB. Yet he has extreme mental lapses and high turnover rates. Likewise with Justin Herbert (who is VERY mobile) Yet people will destroy Hurts, Jackson for being "glorified running backs” who don’t deserve to be QBs.

You’ll always have a pocket passer in every era. Burrow, Stafford, - but it puts so much more pressure on your offense to find these very specific elite players who lack a huge gap on their athleticism and they’re few and far between.

Brees, Brady, Manning are generational once in a lifetime players after the passing boom proof of Dan Marino.

Look at Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath, Roger Staubach … the "prototype” would be absolutely abysmal options in today’s game. Even John Elway might be fighting for his life.

Today everyone is bigger, stronger, faster on average. You have ends and tackels running 4.8, and 4.4s. You have DBs at 6’2 running sub 4.4. Linebackers just insanely atheltic and tuned to guard TEs, fill holes, and cover open space.

Strong disagree there. They weren't good last year. Everyone had them ranked in the bottom half entering the season and they didn't do much to improve. They were missing their top CB. Sainristil isn't that good and they had the corpse of Rasul Douglas out there. They are going to be lucky to finish the year average.

I agree their secondary is bad. The front 7 looks to be improved. Oweh, Chenal and Styles all were able to make plays. Chaisson even seemed to get some pressure. They looked better coached and were playing aggressively. I don't think they will be a good defense. They definitely didn't get run over as they have been in past seasons.

A lot of nifty play calls we saw week 1. Cool plays, scheming guys open, etc. Doesn't mean they won't come for the Eagles, but would've been nice to have something like that in Week 1 where it's like "Ok, Mannion... dude's in his bag..."

I never fully bought Mannion being some genius. Doesn't mean he can't be. I went into the season with no opinion and was going to allow his work to speak for itself. A lot of people jumped on that genius train though. I suspect more because he wasn't named Patullo more than anything else.

The thing is though if the offense sucks again this year, can't see the fans blaming the coordinator again, so I suspect the masses will turn on Sirianni if that happens.

1 hour ago, Sack that QB said:

Eh, we'll see about that.

Too early to judge, not too early to be concerned I'd say. Especially for someone like me who predicted the offense to be bad this year. It's not like I predicted it to be great and flipped after one game. Sunday is almost exactly what I expected and I picked them to miss the playoffs.

Obviously there are concerns, everyone's raised many concerns all offseason. There's a lot to wait and see. They won the game, Jalen threw 3 TD passes, there were a lot of good plays and it's a division rival with rust from no preseason, new scheme and all that. They played worse last year returning players and promoting OC from within that was supposed to bring consistency. This was better.

Why should he be on the roster? Just because he was successful in the Stoutland system 2 years ago does not make him the same player with the capabilities to play inside this offense...I don't understand the fixation on a name and a belief that there will be a natural transition...

Well they played well yesterday. I was recently told "last year doesn't matter!!!" The Commies defense ranked just below the Eagles yesterday (Eagles 16th, Commies 17th). Based on how they played week 1. The Commanders had a good pass rush and blitzed breaking up plays. The Eagles O line had issues of course. And things will improve, next time we play them should be different.

In all the factors I listed, guys will harp on one about the Commies defense. There are a lot of reasons why not to judge the offense harshly from week 1. And the Commanders didn't play really bad defense this week. They may later. But they played well and got pressure. Also all the factors with the new coach and scheme and all that.

Yeah the key is when they break the huddle. Would be interested to see if anyone has charted how many seconds are left on the play clock by the time they get to the LOS, not when the ball is being snapped.

I couldn't find the stat so I asked ChatGPT (Hey Nick uses it too!).

Quarter

Estimated average time left on play clock at huddle break

1st

~11 seconds

2nd

3rd

Other Gems in the story:

On the Jags who beat the Browns:

8. Jacksonville Jaguars (14): Among the many reasons the Jags, who already sit alone in first place as they embark on their AFC South title defense, should get a little more respect is the edge tandem of Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker … even if it's not the best one in their division.

14. New York Giants (23): Don't want to overrate them this early, but Sunday night's victory over the Cowboys was no fluke. This was efficient, smashmouth, John Harbaugh football, and the rest of the NFC East is officially on notice.

@Joe Ball Don't worry. It's still your year:

15. Dallas Cowboys (9): Don't want to underrate them this early, but Sunday night's loss to the Giants was no fluke. America's Team still has plenty of time to make a long-awaited Super Bowl push … yet must still disprove the notion that these are the same underachieving Cowboys.

Some people are sports writers because they kept getting banned from message boards for their bad takes.

I dunno if I would say he's a genius but I would be curious to see how the offense looks if the o line can get blocks and hold up.

I feel like then we get a better understanding of what he's capable of as an oc

The defense was better. Offense I'd say slightly because Hurts was better. But just evaluating week 1 in a vacuum I did not like what I saw from the offense at all. I wouldn't say it was terrible, but I would say somewhere between bad to below average from where it needs to be.

I think what concerned me most was it didn't look very different. That did not remotely look like a Shanahan style offense. Maybe it's because they couldn't run the ball so they couldn't do what they wanted. But their most successful plays were 2025 stuff. It felt like the 2025 offense to me. Still a lot of hitches, a lot getting late to snap the ball, unable to run, their best plays off improvisation or individual greatness in that moment. I would be less concerned if it looked like the offense we were told we were getting but say they had 3 and outs because the timing was off or whatever. It just looked like a sluggish, predictable offense with poor blocking a la 2025, but the difference was Hurts dealt with it a lot better. Which, good, but 1) It still needs to be a lot better and 2) Not fair to ask Hurts to bail them out every game.
