But if you successfully develop that flawed prospect, you still eat it eventually with their contract and they’ll get their cap destroying money. If a team tanks hard and ends up with one or more top 5 picks, it’s really nice to be able to use them on franchise cornerstone hyper-elite non-QBs though so the aforementioned project can be surrounded by elite talent. (That’s basically Jalen Hurts, although Howie never had picks quite that high). Some would call it very backwards, but I kind of like the model of building the roster first. You adhere to a blueprint and draft to your wants, but you never know what random chance will land you. Could be Marvin Harrison type WRs and precision slot guys. Could be a physically dominating OL and an all-world RB. (The Eagles landed there in 2024 and it wasn’t exactly their plan). Could be 2 elite TEs. Those setups fit QBs differently.I 100%believe you should build the roster before adding the QB. I don’t know how you would quantify it because it’s speculation, but I would bet money a good percentage of first round QBs who fail to live up to expectations do so because of the circumstances they walk into: poor coaching, poor talent, an OL that gets them killed, etc.I always think back to the 1999 draft — because of the Cleveland Browns expansion team, Tim Couch was robbed of going to the Eagles, where McNabb walked into one of the great coaches of all time, a good OL, and an owner who really cared about stability and winning. Without the 40 sacks he took as a rookie, might he have ended up differently? It says something that the QBs drafted by the eagles have all had some decent level of success. McNabb obviously, Wentz before the injuries, Hurts, but also Foles and even Kolb had a couple good games before getting traded. The thing is, if you really want to capitalize on the cheap rookie contract for QB, you want the team in place so his second through fourth years coincided with the young players around him getting their second deal.I could see the eagles drafting someone in the third or fourth round in 2027, letting that guy and Cole Payton show what they can do in practice behind Hurts, and then making a decision from there. Best case scenario you strike gold and don’t have to draft a guy while you use your first and second to revitalize the OL. Worst case scenario you trade Hurts for a first or maybe a second, you have a pile of draft picks, then go get your guy.

And a lot related to the shutdown with Covid.I’ve always argued the definition of hell. To me, if you are stuck running it back with players you want to part with (See: Alshon) because you can’t cut them due to cap reasons, that’s hell to me. Repeating the same roster over and over. Saints post Brees forced to keep Michael Thomas is a good example. But for the folks that define hell as you can’t make any moves… no. Eagles aren’t there

Now they're all gone and he's the veteran with younger guys.

October 8Oct 8 Jurgens simply can't play guard. When you get beat off the snap on multiple occassions and lack the power to move anyone or the agility to pull, you're not a guarfd. It's a shame, before his back/knees, he was a very good center and probably could have developed into a solid guard.Ravens must be really desperate.Lumpkin or Morris will probably be as good as Jurgens, whether they'll be better remains to be seen, but they should be replacement level, which is all Jurgens offered. The players who have to step up are Steen and Bell.Shipley and Pierce will be interesting to watch, what does Howie do if like Bigsby, they look like better fits for this running schem.Shop Barkley this summer?

Furthermore, the tweets that apparently Stout was going to go out with Lane anyway, means that we already had to find something new at least. But this probably ain't it.

October 8Oct 8 So Sunday the only starters who started in the SB are Hurts and Mailata. Hard to believe but here we are and not much we can do about it.
October 8Oct 8 I think my season prediction was 9-8 and miss the playoffs. I may have been optimistic.
