And with each passing year the historical record is ever clearer that dropping the A-bombs was unnecessary, repugnant and very likely a war crime.

The bombings probably killed more than 200,000 Japanese civilians and maimed untold more. Such destruction of life stirs me to sorrow and outrage. That’s even more true given that there was an alternative available: the US could have dropped an A-bomb in or near Tokyo Bay. Such a warning shot could have persuaded the Japanese to end the war, and its humane nature would have enhanced the US’s moral standing.

The atomic bombings are often framed as the only alternative to a land invasion of a Japan that wouldn’t surrender under any but the most-dire circumstances. The possible need for an invasion loomed throughout 1945, and Americans naturally feared many US casualties. Much of a fanatic Japanese soldiery—and possibly many citizens—might fight to the last inch. One early study estimated 40,000 American soldiers’ deaths, yet President Harry Truman and others soon spoke of "half a million.”

Some argue that the Soviet invasion of occupied Manchuria had as least as much impact on bringing the war to a close as dropping the atomic bombs.  But make no mistake, more civilians were killed in the nighttime fire bombing raids than in both atomic bomb blasts.

Not funny.  I grew up in NYC.  He stayed out of the Page Six articles because he wasn't a socialite.  He had focused press conferences and stayed out of the limelight when there wasn't something to sell.  It was easier to not say something stupid when you don't have a mike in front of you at all times.

As a New Yorker he was pro-gay, pro-abortion, etc.  I grew up listening to Howard Stern, where he was a frequent guest. 

He is no more independent than the Clintons.   He has always been in it for himself only.  Let's not forget Trump University and the scam that was, Trump water, Trump Vodka, Trump steak, Trump Suits....he is smart enough to be marketing all the time, so he had no reason to talk on race.  He had TV shows and products to sell.  That changed when he became president.  He was now selling to a different audience. 

When elected I hoped he could really be different.  Really be successful.  Unfortunately, like most of the product he hocks, he could not.  He never publicized family issues, and no family ever went against him publicly.  He seemed to be a great family man, and I thought that could lead to him surrounding himself with smart and capable people.  We all know it always had to be around him, so only yes men were allowed to enter the circle.  

I really don't understand the blind loyalty to believe everything he says and does.  People would vote him as lifelong king if given the chance because they believe what he says about himself only.  I am not aware of anything he was able to do that was so unique or trailblazing.  If you look at his record, he achieved little for all of the brilliance he claims.

Lastly, he showed the world that the US cannot be relied upon anymore.  We were at one time reliable, depending on your point of view, for better or worse, but the world placed a high value on that reliability.  Trump has shaken that confidence and has opened the door for countries like Russia and China knowing that we are one election from lunacy and chaos again.  Markets do not do well with chaos.

I'll sneak in one political post and then I'll fall back to complaining about our crap drafts.

Most Americans on both sides of the spectrum are closer to the same page than you might think.  We mostly want the same things for ourselves and have similar ethical respect for others.  Political machines are usually the ones that try to paint caricatures of the alternative viewpoint...rich selfish racists vs America hating commies.  And nearly all presidents are not good people.  The sheer ego and narcissism it takes to put your family through that, to jiggle the right balls, grease the right palms...Obama, Biden, Trump, Bush, Clinton...Americans might want to stop hero-worshipping presidents and their families.  

Much like our Eagle draft picks...some are great athletes, some are better college football players, but whatever flavor of the day side of that spectrum they come from, they all end up sucking.

That's what checks and balances are for.

The truth of the politics is deeper than that.  The world was experiencing a worldwide depression.  The truth was that the world was in a period of isolationism and nationalism (making the last decade something to consider) and a series of "neutrality” treaties that tried to reign in some of the weapon construction.  The perceived fear was socialism (old time, the state owns type) and communism. The fascist European regimes were vehement anti-communist/socialist.  The perception was that the war in Europe was not our problem was driven by our isolationist focus on our own woes.

Trump is the only leader in our country that has actually stood up to China. China's growing influence has been going on for decades.  Trump was the only one to actually stand up to them while the rest of our politicians and governments in the world lined their own pockets with money from China. 

 

I'm someone who voted Democrat and independent my whole life prior to Trump.  He's the closest thing we have had to an independent president.  No one in the political class, Democrat and Republican, cares at all about the American people. We are nothing more than disposable peasants for them to leach off of for taxes to enrich themselves and those around them with these ridiculous pork filled bills that are passed and then result in kick backs to those who helped pass them.  Our political class is disgusting, both sides of the isle are the same side of the coin.  That's why Trump was so refreshing to not be a part of that career politician class and to so openly go after both sides with the same contempt that those in the political class have for all of us.
