I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

You don't think is serious mismanagement to have to take a +$30M cap hit because your franchise QB needed to leave shave 86.7 million off your 2022 and 2023 cap dollars to create 48 million in space in 2021 ??

I think you're looking at it too myopically. For whatever the reason, there was clearly a push to try and keep the Super Bowl window open past 2017. It failed horribly, resulting in the coaching staff being fired and aging vets on terrible contracts. Howie should have been fired following the mess as he had his part in it.

He wasn't fired, and was tasked in cleaning it up. So how then was he supposed to get under the cap this year? There really doesn't seem to have been another option other than borrowing against the future years and then adapting to the future caps as they come. What would you have done differently than what Howie did?

I'm also a bit confused (blurry vision with the numbers and all) but that chart you posted seems to show we have almost $24 mill in cap space next year? Or am I misreading it?

Eagles were taking the cap hit either way.  Had nothing to do with the damage Howie did to future years to fix his own mess.

I ate enough Chipotle for 3 on Tuesday night on my way back from the Isle of Palms after 5 days of heavy boozing and seafood.  Imagine what happened the next morning, and it's still a more pleasant thought than Foles at QB at this stage of his career.

1. Dude my stomach is jacked after a week of booze and seafood at the beach for at least another week. By the end of the week I have to go out to places that have somewhat sanitary shidders.

2. BDN >>> Hurts. All day. At this stage in his career?? He’s only like 31 homes

I was listening to the interview with her and pretty sure she said " I feel like the Eagles are going to do something".  So it's basically nothing.

Pretty strong statement.  I feel like the Eagles aren't going to do something, so there's that.

Once the rookies sign their contracts, and their second year cap numbers apply to that number, you have 43 players under contract and 9.3 million in 2022 cap space.

Then as I said above, lets say the Eagles pick 10th, the Dolphins pick is 20th, and the pick we get from the Colts is in the mid 20's, using the same OTC chart the article used to figure out the rookie class contracts ( which will be higher next year ), that means we are looking at about 13 million to sign next years draft picks.  So at this moment, if we use the picks we have, especially the early picks, we technically are already needing to find 3 million in cap space for rookies, before even thinking about a free agent.

Great, another practice squad level CB. Woohoo.  All are secondary woes are resolved. They show him in a Bikings uniform because they didn’t have a picture of him in a Jags uniform.

And I guess this circles back to my last point, that it's not something that worries me. Howie (if he isn't fired this year, which he won't be) will likely figure it out again. We've been discussing getting Desean Watson, and I don't think his cap number would prevent Howie from making the trade, which really sums up my argument.

There are a few things going on here.

First, the material reduction in the cap due to COVID necessitated more "creative" solutions.

Second, there are several flavors of cap management here that are being comingled.

  1. There were the "kick the can" moves like Kelce, Slay, etc.  I'm not sure, but they may have had to pay a premium to garner the cooperation from the players.  Please confirm, if you can.
  2. There were the "cut loose" moves like Alshon and Malik Jackson that were given June 1 designations.
  3. And there were the the Flacco, Wilson signings, where they created dummy years to shoehorn the new additions into this year's cap.

I'd say the cost of #1 would be the only thing considered to be egregious here.  Like Wentz, the Alson and Jackson cuts were a product of previous bad decisions.

Define "competitive".

Not be Kindle for a dumpster fire.

I'm not expecting an MVP campaign or even a pro bowl appearance

It will be his first full year as a starter and he'll have some growing pains but if he can at least not be a big reason the eagles are losing I think that will suffice for now.

If he comes and is a one read then take off qb and doesn't become anything more I'll be disappointed.

I think for hurts 2 steps forward 1 back is competitive, when he starts taking 1 step forward 2 back then it's time to pull the plug.

We'll see how it goes, hurts to me is very similar to Dak in size and attributes and leadership qualities. We'll see.

Notable nugget from the SB nation writer for Alabama.  Article was about DeVonta Smith, but his opinion on Hurts was very similar to my expectations on Hurts.

Great guy, teammate etc.  A rare player that we have seen a whole bunch in college, at multiple programs.  Would be extremely surprising to me based on what we have seen and know about him if he became a viable starting QB in the NFL, for a competitive team.

That guy for SB nation sounds like a Hurts hater.   He can't bring facts into the discussion like that.

We can't afford Watson

But the salary cap under Howie has never gotten in the way of the team making any moves to improve the roster.   Any player that doesn't fit clearly wasn't an upgrade, and the Eagles wouldn't have been better adding him.   Simple math.

After all, I've been told countless times that the Eagles don't need to sign any FAs for 2022, because they aren't going to be competitive anyway... and they don't have any young talent to extend.  So, who would they possibly want to bring in for 2022?   The next two years are just throw aways according to the Howie support group.
