Who's left at CB?

Sherman - pretty sure he hates Philly and the organization, but my memory is fuzzy. I think he's trashed us in the past, but that might've been the Chippah years when he was getting rid of everybody. Probably costs too much as well.

Brian Poole - Eh, a slot corner. Don't think we need another one.

Robey-Coleman - Nope, saw enough last year

Gareon Conley - Alright, now we're talking. Seems like a lot of teams have shown interest, but there's a reason he hasn't signed on anywhere. Much better man corner than zone though, and we could easily be out bid by other teams. I'd take a shot on him if he's willing to play here, but not sure he'd fit the system.

Bashaud Breeland - I hate the player, but he'd be an upgrade over what we have. Asking price might be too high.

Casey Hayward - Older, had a terrible year last year, but had been good before that. Maybe they bring him in late.

Jason McCourty - Older again at 33, but does have a lot of position versatility that Gannon seems to want. Could be a one year stop gap, but his best days are behind him.

Darqueze Dennard - Former 1st rounder has been a bonafide bust. Do not want at all.

So out of that group, who would you target?

Give me Conley and Hooker on 1-year prove it deals.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Barnett is basically a JAG that has never had more than 6.5 sacks and who runs really hard and hustles but also usually takes himself way out of position

Cox looks like he might be cooked, Im hoping its just injuries. But he seems perpetually dinged up and was nowhere near as impactful as anyone expected last year

Graham is a dude but still, not highly productive pass rushing and hes 33

Sweat is a limited player and we may have seen his ceiling already

Our group isnt nearly as deep as it seems

Cox had 6.5 sacks, 9 tfls, 38 solo tackles.   He was among the best in the League for QB pressures.  He was very good last season and it was a rebound from 2019.  Hargrave played very well once he returned from his injury.  There's a lack of depth at DT but the top 2 are not JAGs.  Graham was productive last season and is above average. I think Sweat is unproven and the position isn't deep anywhere.

Why?

Because he's still got a ton of potential, just turned 25 and our safeties are trash.  Sign both Hooker and Conley, 2 former 1st round picks under the age of 26 who at the very least, can't be any worse than what we have but also have potential to reach their 1st round status.

Edit to add Steven Nelson, who seemingly would be a nice target. But how much can you afford to pay him? He'll like command a salary in the 5-6 mill range I'd guess.

McCourty signed somewhere, and Hayward signed right after the draft with the Raiders. Conley seems hurt or something, he's been a popular name among fans and beat writers but I haven't heard a team even bring him in for a visit or tryout.

Kerrigan is fine or whatever. Nice depth. Not close to what he once was. Like someone said earlier, very similar to the Chris Long signing.

Right which was better than "fine or whatever".

I don't understand it from Kerrigan's perspective.  Wouldn't he want to be a Chris Long signing for a team that needs to get over the hump to win a SB?  He would have made a ton of sense for KC.

I always liked him, wish we could had him here in his prime.  It's more like a William Fuller signing IMO.

Lot of injury issues with Hooker.

Needed surgeries for a torn labrum and hernia in college. Then missed training camp rookie year with groin/shoulder issues, then tore his ACL/MCL in week 7.

Missed 3 games the next year, but was relatively healthy until the divisional round against KC, which he couldnt play due to an injury to his foot.

Played 13 games the next year.

Last year, tore his achilles in week 2.

So he's never played a full year of games. He's had significant injuries to his shoulders, knee and Achilles. For all his potential, I'm not surprised he's still available.

I think this is the right take. Signing Wilson, Harris, Flacco, Kerrigan are designed to make us better in 2021 without hurting 2022. They also clearly make us better, so we're less likely to pick in the top 5. I still think we'll go 6-11/7-10 and pick in the 8-12 range.

I had this discussion with some friends recently. I think we as fans tend to overestimate what winning Super Bowl really means for a lot of players. The discussion started when JJ Watt signed in Arizona. I suppose you could try and make a case that Arizona could be contenders, but Watt seemingly would have been far better off signing with Green Bay. He's from Wisconsin, they certainly have a far better path to a Super Bowl chance than Arizona does, and I don't think they offered that much less money.

Can some please confirm this...

It looks like OverTheCap and Spotrac have not yet accounted for the impact of cutting Jeffrey and Jackson after June 1.

That would add another to $4M to the ~$4.3M that both sites are currently showing.

I agree with the concept.  But Flacco's deal throws excessive money at the 2021 problem that could be used in 2022.

Why do you think Dennard is a bust but Conley isn’t?  I am not saying Dennard isn’t a bust but Conley is a bust too and injured all the time.

Oh I get it but in a rebuild, that's the kind of player I want to take a chance on.  Especially at a position of weakness.

Money.

I'm guessing any reputable corner left on the market is out of Howie's price range for now.

I like the kerrigan signing though.

I'm not buying that.  It's May, no one on the market is in the position to demand a large contract. Also not like Kerrigan came here to play for free.

They both are, I suppose. I think Conley was asked to play zone in Oakland, which isn't his best usage. But you're right, both are busts.

Yes, it turned out better than that. Of course we were a surprise SB contender. I see us as a six-win team, so "fine or whatever.”

I get it, but honestly I'd rather just throw the unknowns we have out there. See if any of them have any ability, and if they don't, it helps draft position next year and we should be able to upgrade when the rest of the roster is ready to compete. I'm OK with McPhearson starting as CB2, let's see what he's got.

Maybe they can get both.

I like Sitngley, but the more I watch DeVonta Smith put an absolute clown suit on him in back to back years, the more I'm a little less excited about him.

I'm OK with Kerrigan.

At this point, I believe he can help the secondary with his pass rush more than any free agent CB could.

I also think that he is the type of quality vet that a new coaching staff would want to help initiate their culture.

I definitely wouldn’t watch DeVonta versus him if I was a Stingley fan but the truth is that DeVonta has three years on him. Oh and DeVonta was a really good collegiate WR.

It’s part of the reason why you can’t read too much into college production: having a recent high school grad playing against pro level talent/skill is not a helpful read on either player.

Smith put a clown suit on everyone.

OTC already has accounted for hit.  Jeffrey and Jackson had cap hits before the June 1 designation of 16.5 and 11.1 million.

Once designated, it became 7.5 and 5.7 million in 2021, with 9 and 5.4 million moving to 2022.

I'd really like to know what the plan is for Milton Williams.

He's the type of player who would be a guaranteed bust under Schwartz.  Schwartz was underrated and over-criticized by us in some ways, but he absolutely did suck at anything involving creativity or maximizing unique fits.

There will be a fine line between Williams becoming a #3 DT who is a liability against the run (or a depth DE who is not disruptive) and becoming a truly excellent pass rusher and full time player who creates a unique headache and matchup problem by moving around the DL.

His explosive athletic traits are very rare...and usually I like to give these types of raw athletes a home at 1 single position to get them comfortable, but I really feel that Williams' success hinges upon moving him around.

Not sure I get the Kerrigan signing.  Hopefully no guaranteed money or very little.  Frankly, I hope he gets beat out in TC.  Not much of an endorsement on DE types that Howie favored over a couple of CBs that I would have preferred.  Is interesting that he now has two DEs with 3/4 OLB rush skills and a DE with 3/4 DE skills and 4/3 DT skills.
