Empty yards not backed up by points scored

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Know what matters more? Actually scoring. But yes, they got 13 additional yards as a team in the second half.

He was a mess the second half of games as a whole.

Gaining yards only matters when it leads to points or, when leading late in the game it leads to running out the clock, but there only getting 10 yards every 3 plays matters...

Jalen Hurts trailing with under 2 minutes to go:

31.5% for 0 TDs, 2 INT, 3.9 YPA and a whopping QB rating of 5.3

Yikes.

That's crazy!  How many games are included in that stat, 20?

The book is not finished being written on Hurts.   Defenses will continue to adjust to him.  He will need to adjust to them, while also developing and getting better.   And then defenses will readjust, and he will need to readjust, and then the defenses, and then him....

Thank you.

He’s been on this second half stat nonsense about Hurts for over 6 months now.  It’s the only thing he’s got and one of the silliest arguments I’ve seen about Hurts.  You can literally take half stats from just about any QB in the NFL over a 4 game period and I guarantee there will be similar situations when a QB didn’t perform well for 4 halves.  The argument is nonsensical.

Can anyone watch this and honestly say he was worth a 3rd round pick?  There may have been 3 good plays where he actually reads, reacts and explodes to the ball.  Otherwise his highlights are just him showing off his speed chasing guys downfield.  No surprise, his big "highlight" his rookie year was he chased down Lamar Jackson.  If you're a Davion Taylor fan, can you tell me what you see in him that makes you think he's anything but a ST player?

The irony is that, while I usually complain that the Eagles (historically) go for unathletic, slow players, LB really isn’t the position to change that trend.  It’s a read and react position where a slower, lesser athlete is going to get to the ball much faster than an Olympian who doesn’t know what they are doing.

Taylor was horrific...even for the low standards established by Eagles LBs.  He looked like a udfa with athleticism who grew up playing a different sport that you stash on the practice squad for 2-3 years before finding out if they learned how to play football.  Not NFL quality.  It will take some growth and improvement to call him a ST player.

It’s fair to scoff at damning Hurts forever based on second half stats in 4 games on a bad team.  Obviously premature.

Of course he can improve.  So can every second year qb in nfl history.  The fact that he can improve doesn’t somehow make him a good prospect.  Do you see that in the scouting report of every ncaa qb?  "He’s young and he can improve, so he deserves a chance as your starting qb.”

The reality is that no one, ever, has said, "wow Hurts is or has a chance to become a great passer.”  No one has ever raved about him as a passer,  ever. The best thing anyone can say is that he is young and we don’t know.

Not exactly the ingredients I’d prefer to start off with.

His three full starts and the second half of the GB game. He wasn't exactly coming in late to throw the ball a ton until Wentz was benched.

I'd like to push for more white Irish americans in the defensive secondary. #drunkirishmen matter.

Why do you assume that Irishmen are drunk?  That's pretty prejudiced.  You got me all upset now.  I'm going to have to calm down with some glasses of Whiskey and pints of Guinness now.  Jaysus.  For Feck's Sake.

So 3.5 games hahaha.  HUGE SAMPLE SIZE!

I think he belonged #1 overall, so I’m not really here to bash Luck.  I just don’t see what separated him from most #1 overall qbs.

Mayfield and Murray?  Sure.  Reaches.

But guys like Lawrence, Burrow...even Stafford, Bradford...I don’t think there is a gap.

Lawrence is the only guy you mentioned that's close to what Luck was as a prospect, and he still wasn't in the same class. Luck was truly the complete package. You knew you were getting a pro bowl level QB with Luck. That was his floor. He was probably the best prospect since Elway.

The sample size will be the most important decision for Howie to make for the future of the franchise.  If there isn’t overall improvement, how long do you give Hurts?  Most people seem to say this season.

If he’s not a top 15-20 QB after this season I sure as F don’t want him back for 2022.

No it’s not. It makes perfect sense. Look at Mahomes in the SB. Terrible stats. Obviously a bum. Case closed.

He gets this whole season unless by game 12 or so he looks like a complete dud.  Then you can pull the plug early and hope to trade him for a 3rd or 4th in the off-season.

At that point, why even pull the plug unless you’re worried about the development of your pass catchers. I mean, playing Flacco isn’t a move for the future. If Hurts is that bad by week 12, may as well ride it out and collect your high draft pick

Don't expose him further and get more value.

The one thing going for Hurts’ development is that he’s never really HAD to go through his progressions as a QB. In college, all he was asked to do was look at CeeDee Lamb and throw it to him. So maybe it’s not that he CAN’T go through his progressions, he may just be learning how to. So maybe there’s hope. But getting benched by Saban for another guy who isn’t exactly tearing up the NFL isn’t a good sign either. So idk. I’m cautiously pessimistic

This type of argument presumes that Hurts can’t make improvements or adjustments.

Coaching matters.

Surrounding cast matters.

Hurts’ own improvement matters.

It is the data we currently have.

I mean.. I guess. I just feel like if we’re seeing his crappy play for 12 Weeks, the other teams do too. I’m not sure how much value he’d really gain.

I feel ya. But at the same time, our offensive design last year was horrible, our O line was in shambles and we had no WRs. It’s hard for anyone to succeed in that situation, especially late in a season as a rookie. That might just be who he is, but he wasn’t exactly set up for success.

I don’t get why people are hating on a rookie QB during a Covid season with no off-season work.

Our best case scenario is Hurts working out and us using those first round picks next year on other positions.

And protect him against an injury which would would even further lower his value.

The guys he got benched for were #5 and #15 in the NFL draft.

So it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The guys he replaced in Oklahoma, and played almost as well with no time to prepare, were #1 and #1 in back to back drafts. So he had a high standard to live up to.

QBs can improve, Romo was undrafted, Brady was a skinny weak armed QB, Dak was projected as a career backup, Warner was pumping gas. It's rare, but some players do figure it out.
