Yeah, I like it especially with Marsh. Guy has been on fire the whole season so far - 40 hits in 119 ABs. Gotta keep him starting everyday at this point I would think.

The Phillies having no good platoon options with him forces them too. Their Otto kemp experience blew up in their face. Felix Reyes stinks. So essentially forcing them to have to play marsh every day. He’s either gonna sink or swim against LHP. It’s kind of similar with Stott. Sosa should be playing more 3B as Bohm is horrific. Rather have Stott and Sosa out there then sit Stott for Sosa and play Bohm.

I’d bet if Phillies get themselves into a legit shot at the WC before the deadline (not sure that happens the entire NL central is 3 games over .500 or better) that Dombrowski will go after arenado at 3b. To arenado’s credit he’s having a good bounce back year. .274/.325/.759 with 5 HRs and 17 rbi in 33 games. Dbacks started off good and now just bad.

Assuming he is still performing at this level by the trade deadline, I would be good with it. Plus, it looks like the Phillies would only be on the hook for 11 million between this year and next year. The Cardinals are eating a chunk of his salary. A corpse would be better than Bohm offensively.

He makes sense as he was also connected to them the past 2 years. Were rumors then.

Yeah, right now I could do without any Bohm or Reyes. They both stink outloud.

Issue is Garcia and Castellanos making $30 plus tax in RF. Production you are getting isn’t worth that price. Credit to Garcia as he’s been better lately since they changed his hand placement on the bat in Chicago.

Don't destroy my positivity please, you only get so much of it.

Painter is a bum

Painter absolutely blows. Just another in a long line of overhyped bum prospects. He's no better than Taijuan Walker.

Painter couldn’t even get 1 out and the game is already over. This kid is terrible

His control is all over the place which was his issue when he was drafted. He got really good at controlling it prior to his TJ surgery. It’s not consistently there since. Need to figure out how like they did with samchez to get his command better

Very concerned about painter

Painter might not be great this season, but I am not going to rush to any conclusions long term. The kid in only 23 and has barely pitched.

Imo he has to show more as the season goes on. He can’t just be this inconsistent all year. You want to see improvement as the season goes on. I tend to agree with you and part of the reason he didn’t pitch a lot was the poor handling of his Tommy John’s surgery. He should’ve had it in that spring training and he would’ve gotten a half a year in 2024 instead of sitting out for two full years. I think a big problem he has is command. Which was the book on him when he came out of high school. And he was able to work on that to become a top pitching prospect before his TJ surgery. I don’t think you can sit out two years and then be on an innings restriction and work on getting your command to be where it was. It took him about 2-3 years to get his command to be there. That should really be the thing cotham is working on him with.

Pitchers take a long time to develop and can become great later in their career. So that’s fine…but it’s also true that Painter is no where near what was expected. So the upside is theoretically all still there. But the runway to him actually helping the team is getting longer and longer.

He’s going to end up in AAA if this keeps up.

@e-a-g-l-e-s eagles! I never wanted to trade all the prospects. Specifically Painter and Miller. My only point is that I have Phillies prospect ptsd.

The Phillies do a bad job of identifying and bringing along young talent from low A to majors. They disappoint every time.

My point, even before it became popular to criticize Painter and before Miller had a life ending back injury was that the chances of them becoming even half of the hype were so remote.

Sure, there are tons of stud pitchers who looked bad through their first handful of starts…but for every one of them there are 50 guys who never amounted to anything. And that’s the bucket that Painter now finds himself in. He hasn’t pitched well in years, royally struggles to get through 4+ innings, has a fastball that has fundamentally regressed since tj…yes, he still has all the potential in the world and we have to be patient. But the odds are officially against him.

We never should do this…but imagine they did have to trade him right now. What value do you think he’d get in a trade at this very moment? Would he get a league wide top 30 prospect? No way.

I disagree that they disappoint every time. Nola was fine til his second contract. Ranger Suarez and Sanchez were great for the phillies. They haven’t been great but over the last decade nola, Ranger and Sanchez are 3 of the best pitchers this organization has developed over the last 30 years. Only Hamels has been better than any of those 3 guys. Spencer Howard was a disaster. Had some hope for others too but the fact you found and developed Sanchez, Nola and Ranger is actually pretty good even if Nola sucks now later in his career. Pitching wise to develop 3 top end of the rotation starters isn’t disappointing every time. Is it dodgers type success? No but it’s not they miss every single time (they supposedly offered more to Yamamoto than the dodgers did. Reason I bring this up is because I think the Phillies can identify pitchers who have special stuff, but have some mechanical flaws and issues that they need to fit and believe they can with cotham hence luzardo, Sanchez, wheeler and ranger (all had flaws coming into the organization). This isn’t a hitter situation where they just can’t identify hitters whatsoever.)

— add to this they identified Wheeler in free agency. Wheeler had a bunch of injuries before coming to the Phillies. He always had good stuff, but he couldn’t stay healthy and he was never this type of pitcher. His last 3 years with the Mets he had a 5.21, 3.31 a 3.96 era. So he was mostly solid, not great as a no 3-4 starter. The Phillies helped him stay healthy with a plan and they also made some tweaks to his mechanics. I have to give the Phillies some credit cause there was a lot of people that that hated or disliked that signing.

Furthermore, when you wanted to trade him in 2023 when his value was highest the rotation had massive issues after 2023. Sanchez was an afterthought. He had a 5.63 ERA the previous season with the Phillies and was considered maybe a back end of the rotation guy. Nola was a FA and it wasn’t a definitive he was back. Tbh during that season, it was thought he was leaving cause they weren’t remotely close to a deal based off the leaks. So essentially after 2023 if nola left the were banking on wheeler, walker (sucked), ranger. Again Sanchez didn’t prove himself until 2023 and he really only got the opportunity cause painter got hurt. Painter was going to be your 5th starter and falter was going to be the guy they relied on if someone got hurt.

So in 2023 they needed painter to be the prospect they thought in order to replace Nola if he left in free agency because Sanchez you, I and everyone had absolutely no clue because he was miserable the year before. You’re making conclusions now but back in 2023 when his value was the highest and that’s when need to trade him to cash to get his best value. After the injury you were always dealing him for less. It’s why every trade included him and another top tier prospect. They couldn’t afford to do it in 2023. They’re way too many question marks about the rotation after 2023. If they knew Sanchez was going to become an ace and that they were gonna get Nola contract done that might have been different. However was more smoke to Nola leaving and Sanchez his 1st two years had a 4.97 and a 5.63 ERA and struggled with his control.

Additionally if you wanted to deal him after 2024 when Sanchez proved to be top of the rotation starter could do it then (Sanchez was good in 2023 but still questions about if it was a fluke or not). Even so you are trading him at a lesser value due to missing 2 years of baseball and it’s why every rumor needed to include a second top tier prospect. Furthermore, some of the names people wanted to trade him for wound up not being great or leaving the team they got traded too as they were FA. Soto was always a pipe dream. You’d have had to overpay what the Yankees did and he was always leaving to go to the Mets or Yankees after the year. Then there was trade for Roberts Jr who is perpetually injured and stinks. Tucker got traded and then left his team (frankly down year in 2025 comparatively to years prior). Go through the list of guys available: weren’t as great as we thought (Arozerena was a guy i liked; he’s been solid but he also didn’t even command painter type prospects when he was dealt), didn’t get traded or were short term solution as they were leaving. Bellinger was one probably could’ve gotten, stayed but he was a LH and most didn’t think he was worth giving up 2 major prospects for. He also could’ve left as he was a FA at end of 2025

As for miller, they were never bringing him up in 2026 regardless of what we all wanted. even if Alec Bohm was this terrible. They were never going to do it. Part of the reason I think they’re bringing them back this slowly (besides not want to rush a back injury and mlb time) is to give them an excuse not too after dealing with the scrutiny they dealt with keeping Crawford down all last year. the Phillies outfield was one of the worst in baseball last year. yet Crawford was playing well and they just didn’t want to bring him up at that time. So part of this is he has the back issue and mlb timeline. I think part of this is also gives them an easier excuse to bring him back slower to avoid the continuous why is he not up since Bohm has been terrible when they just don’t want too as they probably believe he’s not ready at 21

Adding to miller, part of the reason I brought up arenado yesterday is because I don’t think it’s a given Stott is here after 2026. I could see the Phillies wanting arenado thru 2027 and using miller at 2B which imo is a better position for him. Especially if can make him more comfortable his 1st year in the majors and can learn from arenado. Whether or not that happens is a different story. But they’ve been linked to him in the past and I could see them having the thought process we get a year and a half of him at third. Trade Stott on the last year of arbitration to avoid a potential Bohm situation and miller can play 2b which may be his best position
