Do it. Probably can get really great seats relatively cheap. I kind of think he’s going to be called up regardless later in the year either bullpen or starter

Don't bother. Some ridiculous injury is coming for him any day now, the Phillies will try to rehab it for a year, then decide on surgery and before you know it he's 28 years old until he makes it to the majors. And that's the best case scenario.

It’s sad, but likely true. May as well trade him while he has value. They really should just do that with all their prospects.

I would send Painter down.

He was up at 100 before Tommy Johns. He's hitting 96 mph.

He doesn't have control or strike out ability.

Send him down to develop more.

Doesn't matter if it takes 2 years. He's young.

Questions are whether he can recover any velocity and develop control.

Trade for another starter or bring up another prospect.

And, fire Dave Dombrowski. Don't let him trade away any more prospects.

There’s multiple issues. First they had painter triple A last year and it didn’t help him with that coaching. So he’s not going get as good as coaching as he could get from Cotham. Right now his biggest problem is that he has a command issue, especially with his 4-seamer. His 4-seamer had no control of today and it got hit when he did get it in the strike zone. His secondary pitches have actually been pretty good for most of the year. he has more command of those pitches than his 4-seamer.

The post above alluded to the fact that he’s only throwing 96 to 97. That’s because I think he doesn’t have good enough control when he’s just letting it rip like he did before Tommy John surgery. So he’s compensating by trying to have more control, but less velocity. Think of a couple years ago with estevez with the angels (traded to us) actually lose 2 MPH because he couldn’t control it when he just let it rip. I think that’s part of it but also painter needs more extension on his 4-seamer/fastball to get more movement on it. His fastball doesn’t have the movement that luzardo, Sanchez and wheeler currently have so no movement and no command is a recipe for it to get smacked

The other issue is the Phillies do not have anybody ready yet to make the jump to the MLB to be a starter. They depleted their farm system over the last couple years trading away prospects that could probably give you fifth starter stuff (again why i said dealing Bailey falter for Castro was idiotic). I would say wood, but the fact is he’s still in AA and they’re not gonna jump him from AA to the majors after two starts. You’re gonna probably need another couple starts in double A and if he is still really good then move him up to AAA and by the trade deadline yoi probably getting him up here if you can’t get a SP.

I’d feel fine about Painter’s struggles this year if he were great (or even remotely good) in AAA last year.

Problem is…he hasn’t been a good pitcher at any level since AA in 2022…and even that was FIVE starts.

He was pure projection based on bullpen work and mostly starts in A ball. The Phillies botched how they handled his injury, costing him 2 years…and then they forced him up the ranks when he clearly wasn’t ready, due to lost time.

Then he went straight to AAA last year after some underwhelming Clearwater work and did nothing but struggle. And then he was handed the 5th starter spot for 2026.

I understand the Phillies pitching coach is well-regarded, but Painter never graduated the minor leagues and was never ready. His hype was justified pre-TJ. But he’s done nothing but disappoint ever since and needs to get back to the basics outside of the pressure and scrutiny of the big league ball club that he never earned being a part of. He’s now on the delayed long haul plan. It’s going to take a few years, if ever, for him to live up to that hype. Needs to really settle in at AAA before coming back up.

Also, the way Painter is pitching right now…that’s not going to play in AAA either. No control with a flat fastball isn’t getting results there either. He’s really at a AA level right now.
