He’s going to be on an innings restriction next year anyway. So I’m guessing go slow now and they’d rather have him later in the year with the restriction than early in the year. They’ll view it like if they get him back in July/August as a deadline pickup that’ll bolster their rotation. Probably getting a 5th starter in FA to begin the year and then eventually a 6th man rotation when he comes back

With how long it’s been since he’s pitched, it’s completely possible he has a hiccup that keeps him down.

He’s going to be asked to be a 5th starter. Don’t think you are asking him to be lights out. Especially if they go to a 6 man rotation as well. Just asking him to be competent and not Taijuan walker. I think you ask more of him in 2026 when the innings restriction is dropped. if they don’t bring him up until July, that’s about 10 months from now. There’s gonna be hiccups along the way. They’re always is. But 10 months from now he should be way further along than what he is now. It’s why I said, I think they’re gonna go with him midseason so they can extend the rotation to a six man rotation with his restriction. Also if Seth Johnson winds up being good down the stretch they can bring him along even slower than they anticipated and he can eventually be a 6th starter in a rotation. Which also helps him and the staff. you don’t need him to be Zack wheeler in 2025. You just need him to not be Walker when he comes back.

I mean lights out in AA/AAA, wherever he starts the season. He’s logged a whopping 28 innings in AA ball. There are no guarantees he doesn’t end up with a 5.00+ era in Lehigh Valley because he has trouble locating a pitch. They won’t send him up if he’s not ready…even if he only needs to be not Taijuan Walker.

They were actually awful. I actually think it’s more about getting him pitching again. If his stuff is still great then they have Cotham who’s one of the best pitching coaches in the mlb to work with him on his command. I’m guessing he’s going to be working with cotham this winter on that. Even if he didn’t get injured he was likely having that done. His command was his biggest flaw coming into when they drafted him. It’s likely more beneficial for him having cotham teaching and helping in that area The fact he only logged 28IP and they thought he was ready before the injury to be a 5th starter in their rotation kind of speaks to how good they believe his stuff is. So if his stuff is still there and they have cotham i think they’d feel pretty good about him in a rotation midseason. I’m guessing he’s on a plan this winter, probably some innings in the AZ fall league to start ramping him up. I think a bigger non-talked about issue is that Scott Boras is going to want him in the rotation from day one. The reason Scott Boras wants him in the rotation from day one is because he will meet the limit to have an accrued year. If the Phillies don’t bring him up until midseason because he’s on an innings restriction, he’s not going to accrue that year. So they’re gonna get another cheap controllable year out of him.

With Painter, optimizing his development (the best way to do so is obviously debatable) is a bigger priority than the performance of the 2025 6th starter. I think the Phillies have demonstrated a pretty consistent franchise level tendency to be conservative with their top prospects in the past. The key thing with Allard and Phillips is that they are 27 and 26 and that, even more importantly, the Phillies don't care. Their upside is either settling in as an above average 5th starter or catching lightning in a bottle as a high leverage reliever after moving to the pen. Downside is never pitching for the team again. If they offer the possibility of eating some innings in a near scheduled loss despite not demonstrating readiness in the minors, that's essentially fine.

If they offer the possibility of eating some innings in a near scheduled loss despite not demonstrating readiness in the minors, that's essentially fine. I still think he’s going to be called up next year. They’re not gonna keep him in the minors. This ain’t like Abel who wasn’t the same type of prospect as painter and wasn’t ready to be called up until possibly this year. He was terrible til the last month and it’s why he didn’t get called up. Could that happen with painter? Maybe but he’s a far superior prospect to what Abel was prior to the injury. So if he’s close to pre-injury i don’t think he’s just going to be kept in the minors. Painter was ready after 28IP. If his stuff is still there like he showed his first pitching and his command isn’t horrific off, they aren’t keeping him down there. Second Scott boras is not gonna allow them to do that. Besides the Phillies trying to not have him have TJ surgery, a reason they pursued that first was boras. third, they want him working with cotham. He is their best pitching coach in their entire organization. So him learning with cotham is way more valuable than him being in AA if his stuff is there and his command is about where it was pre-injury. It’s why he only pitch 28 innings and they were trying to get him into the rotation in 2023. Because they know his development can only go so far in AA and they need him working with the guy who’s been able to make Sanchez and Ranger into the players they have become. Ranger wasn’t nearly this effective in the minors especially not as a starter. Cotham has worked with him to get to the point he was at earlier this year. Sanchez had control problems in the minors. It is why people thought he wouldn’t make it as a major league pitcher. Since he’s been called up, his command has been so much better because he’s working with cotham. go to Hoffman and Estevez. Hoffman before he came here was pretty much a bust. Hoffman since he’s gotten here has been much better with his location and he’s added stuff to his repertoire and movement in his pitches working with cotham. And Estevez has seen better spin rate and his sliders been better since getting here. Heck his command is better with his velocity since being dealt form the angels. The Angels had had him throwing 2 or 3 mph less so he could have better control. Since he’s come here, he’s throwing like 97 to 99 and he actually has better control than what he’s had it any point in time of his career at that velocity. lastly, I don’t see them waiting until 2026 to bring him up. That’s a whole three years later than what they wanted. They had to wait until now because of the Tommy John surgery. I’m guessing their plan is get him major league experience as 5/6 starter in 2025. So that in 2026 he can go for an expanded role and potentially elevate him in the rotation. Because in 2026 you don’t want him being without experience with the potential for Nola/Wheeler begins to decline. You want him having some experience to make a jumping point in 2026. imo I’d be somewhat shocked if he’s on the major league roster to start the season. If he is, it means his stuff was so good and his command was really good that they had no other choice. But I think he’s going to pitch in spring training. then likely going to sent to double or triple A for 2 to 3 months. Let him knock some of the rust off. then bring him up to get him that major league experience as a 6th starter. Which helps out the rest of the rotation anyways especially with the extra innings from 3 consecutive postseasons. And gets him through probably the rest of the season. So then in 2026 there’s no restriction and he is with experience and probably elevated in the rotation if it goes well.

If you lived thru it then it will remind you of why you loved that team so much and if you didn't then it will be a great lesson Phillies' history. This team was the equivalent of the Eagle Buddy teams or those old Flyer Broad St Bully teams in terms of capturing the maximum amount of love possible from the city. Too bad only the Bullies actually won the title. Note: I don't really think the 76ers had an equivalent team that stood out like that but if they did then it was probably that '76-77 team that lost to Walton and the Trail Blazers in the final. I remember going to a game in 2003 where they gave out the dvd of this, the same day they traded for crappy mike williams

September 5, 20241 yr Maybe the gun is off. They are so cheap there the gun was probably bought at the dollar store

And they thought like with painter they give him a couple of weeks/month+ off, rehab it and it would get better. And it didn’t improve that much or same problem arose when he came back
September 5, 20241 yr Pretty consistent. Did get up to 91 which is his max. But his fastball has been around 88-89 consistently
September 5, 20241 yr GIDP with the bases loaded ... why am I not surprised The guy has just walked two batters in a row. Make him throw strikes. Do't do his work for him!
September 5, 20241 yr Our hitting with RISP is just not good. 1-7 tonight and 14-85 over this 10 game stretch. It’s amazing we have gone 7-2 with hitting .165 with RISP over this stretch.
September 5, 20241 yr I can just see Rojas killing them in a big spot in the playoffs of course right after the next break for another kid with cancer and a pill commercial
