EMB Blog: 2023 Regular Season thru Week 9 - NO POLITICS

Featured Replies

If this were a season where I was just hopeful the Eagles could find a way into the playoffs but wasn't really expecting it, I might be more concerned with AFC vs NFC regular season win records. But I expect the Eagles to be even better than last year and to beat every NFC team they face in the playoffs. I'm not worried about some darling Cinderalla team starting off 1-0 after winning a game they practically gave away several times but were bailed out by one player's all time terrible performance.

Lemme guess. Most people were rooting for the Lions tonight even though they're an NFC team that could battle us for playoff seeding and there could be a time later in the season where we're rooting like hell for the Lions to lose games. Meanwhile it doesn't matter one bit to us what the Chiefs record at the end of the year is. They're either in the Super Bowl or they're not. Winning extra regular season games wouldn't impact the Eagles at all.

Am I right?

Didn’t watch the game, but I don’t consider the Lions a threat — at least not to a top seed discussion.  They’ve been the Lions for so long I’d still put even money or better on the Vikings to win that division.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, are relevant to the Eagles if the goal is to get to another Super Bowl this season (which it is).  I think with Mahomes the Chiefs will be a formidable test, and I feel the same way about Joe Burrow, even though he’s less proven.  The Bills would be my preferred AFC opponent of the big 3 teams because Josh Allen IMO is more prone to making errors and taking too many risks.

For that reason — and I’ll add Sean McDermott is a dolt — my only real rooting interest in the AFC would be for Buffalo to get top seed to give them a better chance to beat out the Bengals and Chiefs.

Meh when I don't have skin in the game I root for the underdog. I don't have the same vitriol for the Chief's after the loss than I do for sore loser baby teams like the 49ers or Vikings. "Historically bad franchise beats SB champs" is just a fun headline.

Can't think of a better example of football hubris than going for it on 4th and 25, at home, from your own side of the field, only down by one, with two minutes left in the game. KC deserved to lose.

That was bizarre. Three timeouts. Two minute warning. If you punt it down to about the twenty and stop them on three downs, you can get the ball back with about a minute and a half left and one timeout, only needing about forty yards for a winning field goal. Way better odds than converting fourth and forever. Going for it there — and likely failing — means you also have to stop them but it also might put you in position of needing a touchdown to win, and it also increases the odds that the Lions would go for it on fourth and short, which is not something you want to happen when you’re desperate to get the ball back.

Although I was rooting for Kansas City, I did get a chuckle after the Mahomes pick six when Collinsworth informed the viewers that that would count as an interception. Ummm, no kidding? What did he think we would think it would count as, a field goal?

Even if we don’t consider the Lions to be all that, it’s not hard to imagine them being an eleven or twelve win team. Heck, they won nine games last year. They seem to be improving, apparently had a good draft, and play in a division that could be kinda blah. Why should we count on us going 14-3 or better again? Our schedule isn’t cake, and even if we have a pretty good year, we might only be an eleven or twelve win team ourselves. I have no animosity towards the Lions (yes I remember Lomas Brown) and don’t begrudge them winning the division. One of the four teams has to, so it may as well be them. But I’d like to stay ahead of them in the standings if it comes down to it.

I’d suggest there is about a 85% chance their win tonight won’t matter to us at the end of the year, but it’s the 15% that concern me.

Let that be a little reminder to us all I guess!

Speaking of reminders.  Here is a list of the predictors from last season who have not as yet submitted a prediction for this year's overall record (the "season" column) and/or this week's game with the Patriots (the Sunday's game column)

So far the 39 predictions are as follows, with an average predicted score of Eagles 30 Patriots 17

NOTE: if you want to add a tiebreaker to your prediction, please feel free to do so

I'm seriously jell that they got Branch.

Like jelly school worthy.

I wanted him too. And he plays nickle corner on their depth chart, not safety.

Bold prediction...

...Jalen Carter will be the top-selling non-QB jersey in the league this season.

Even if he gets 20 sacks, I don’t think there’s any way that would happen

The Chiefs offense has been basically Kelce and some other guys since Tyreek left, and he was always the player who allowed Mahomes to improvise so much, he's the best most reliable safety blanket in the league. Last night is what happens when you take an offense's tentpole receiver out of the equation, all the middling receivers that are freed up when Kelce is there that the Chiefs thought they could get by with suddenly face more coverage and show why they were let go by their previous teams.

Kelce has a lot of miles on the clock, he's only missed single games the last 9 years, if he's reached the other side of the hill, it would be devastating for the Chiefs offense, because if Marquez Valdes-Scantling is your #1 Receiver, you don't have one. Their receiver room is a pretty ordinary collection of WR2's and 3's.

Eagles are already chasing in the race for HFA!

Kelce is the top jersey seller for females so we got that

Agree, they are having trouble paying everyone. But, Mahomes is the great equalizer.

I don’t know if it’s been said yet or not, but the real winner last night, was Chris Jones.

I was kind of favouring the Chiefs, but the NBC coverage put me off.  I got fed up of how much they rode the Chiefs last night; best thing since sliced bread blah blah blah.  The Lions didn't enough credit until later in the game.

On the Chiefs WRs, I'd give the Detroit DL a lot of credit. When they moved Hutchinson to get snaps in the middle, it really messed with Mahomes pocket as he wasn't able to step up as much as he had done.  A lot of balls were later than intended and not as ideally placed as normal.  Missing Kelce was yuge for the Chiefs, and the Giants are thankful for what they got for Toney.  Yikes

How the zebras let Taylor line up that deep was a mystery.  Any deeper and he'd have been next to Mahomes in the shotgun; the privilege of the Zebras being in awe of the Chiefs
