Compounded by the fact that we're making Hurts turn his back to the defense, which is new for him. Then he turns around and guys are in his face immediately.

I’m not gonna defend hurts. He did not play well in the second half. I thought in the first half he was fine. Issue on the first half were tank fumbling a ball and Andy Dalton being a souless interception ginger.

Like you said there’s video of our guys just not blocking. Even lane got caught being a turnstile in one of the UC PA. Hurts has his set of issues but we have ones that are compounding his issues.

Furthermore EJ Jenkins shouldn’t even be on an NFL roster. He can’t block and he’s not good as a pass catcher. So why is he on this roster? Partially i think if Calcaterra is healthy he’s likely on here and not ej jenkins. Also we did a poor job drafting a tight end over the years and when there was depth available in free agency, we only thought to get a guy who’s been largely a third string tight end. I love Zach Ertz, but the only reason Zach Ertz is back is because the Eagles did not properly address the tight end room over the past couple years.

Last point, their coaching has been meh this year. Mannion tends to looked good in the first half, but his 3rd quarters have been atrocious. Which tells me teams are adjusting to what he’s doing. he hasn’t figured out the counter to what they’re doing or it’s not quick enough. Overall, it feels like this team is not always focused at the task at hand. Not gonna lie it felt like last night the defense kind of thought because it was gonna be a third string quarterback that they were good to feast. they got punched in the mouth on the first drive of the game. Then all their weaknesses got exposed by great coaching by Ben Johnson

We use analytics we’re analytic based organization. So they’re not gonna just stop using the analytics like EPA because we all can see it on film. The Eagles use analytics for a reason. That tweet and the EPA is giving you context of just how bad they’ve been over a half decade worth of data.

Again, you're not understanding my point. I'm not against the Eagles using it or anyone using it for that matter. I'm just tired of seeing wannabe twitter film dorks or even media people use it on social media as a statement of fact. Like EPA is settled science.

"Team X's offense is 5th in EPA per drive. It's a good offense" = Fing annoying. Essentially implying that EPA makes something factually true.

"I think Team X's offense looks better than people are suggesting, and there are some indicators that back this up... [insert what you've seen in the games or on film here] and also there are some metrics that indicate this as well including EPA/drive." Framing it that way I'm fine with. It's the former.

I may be making a mountain out of a molehill here, but I dislike it because you see less of people talking about what they actually see during the games now(ie the juicy stuff, the good stuff) and it's just "This unit is good or bad because EPA said so"

The good news is that we seem to have an answer at center with Kendall. He’s been the real deal so far.

We haven’t coached like we are analytically driven franchise.

That’s another issue entirely. Frankly sirianni is far too conservative. I can’t believe Sirianni when they were down 13 at midfield did not go for that on 4th. I’m sure the analytics department cringed at it.

I thought I'd never say this while Vic has been the DC... I'm losing hope in the defense. Blown assignments, missed tackles, poor communication. Last night was embarrassing

I think Vic can coach up the secondary, but my fear is it's a mute/moot(?) point if the front can't stop the run or get consistent pressure. That puts us in slow death mode, or risking big plays when resorting to the blitz. Obviously, I'd prefer the latter if it comes to that... that was one of the things that drove me nuts about Gannon; he'd just sit in a soft shell and get picked apart hoping for something good to happen.

kinda are with that particular tweet. As that analytic is telling you it’s not just they’re bad. For context, they are the worst team in the last 5 years bad. None of us would’ve known how bad without that analytic. They’re not just bad, they are out of 160 teams that have played over a five-year period of time. They are the 160th team. And there’s been some absolutely god-awful offenses over that time.

I feel like this is always a big red flag of Sirianni. The Eagles in general want to be analytical but Sirianni operates off of gut feels way too much it becomes nonsensical at times. Reminded me of SB57 and choosing to punt which basically cost them the game.

Nerds need jobs too

Will AI do a better job, if the best nerds program it?

Bears just didn't respect anything. Especially the defense. Like going for it on 4th while they were up

I can understand struggling with this as a first time coach but he hasn’t gotten any better at it. Where is the analytics dude in his headset telling him when to go for it? Who is the genius signing off on WR screens when you’re out of TOs?

There is another issue with the Eagles and sirianni. They want to be an analytic organization. They have a whole department. I post this before, sirianni has had great success in the past. Fans should always be grateful for the success he had. Nobody can ever take that away from him. He’s gonna go down eagles history because of how much he’s won

But at some point you’ve gotta start thinking about into the future. The likelihood is you’re not gonna have an absolutely stacked 2024 roster again. That might be the best Eagles roster we see in our lifetime. So if you’re not gonna have the overwhelming talent advantage like that then you need your coaching to help elevate to make up for that.

I would argue the 2017 Eagles their coaching helped elevate that team particularly after wentz got hurt. that team talent wise was great but I don’t think they were the 2024 Eagles roster. I would argue that playoff run the coaching, particularly on offense (last two games) elevated them so that they could win that Super Bowl. Right now through 3 games, I don’t see the coaching on any level helping elevating this team. imo kind of think talent took over and eventually won them those 2 games against titans and commanders

He gets it.

There definitely seems to be some miscommunication going on. Hurts was visibly confused or frustrated on that fake tush push on 4th and 1 and they got the delay of game.

Still working my way through the thread but it appears not only was turning the game off midway through the third was the right call, but others followed suit.

I haven't seen so many big names come up THIS small since.... well... 80% of the Phillies games this September.

I don't want a complete slave to analytics - sometimes the HC needs to read how the game is going and go against the math. But last night? The defense couldn't make a stop, and the offense needed a spark. If the D was shutting the Bears down, then yeah - pin them deep. To be fair, the defense did somehow force a 3 and out after that punt, but of course a special teams penalty ruined the field position.

Before that, you'd give up back to back scoring drives to start the 2nd half, so...no way you could count on that 3 and out.

Might be time to build again.

Good thing we have a ton of future cap space <_<

Andy Dalton should be cut tonight. I wouldn't even let him fly back on the team plane. Let him find his own way home.

Being ginger should have been the first warning sign

It was pretty telling when Hurts, and even more to an extent, DeVonta Smith, were visibly frustrated with taking the delay of game in that spot.

The good news here is this could be the end of Dalton as your backup Q and hopefully he's cut. I was actually looking for Sirianni to call a timeout there for Hurts to get back in. The Eagles defense had juat made a big stop to keep it at 7-0. Right after, that whole sequence of Hurts getting hit hard (illegally) and Dalton going in to throw a ball like a girl (he pulled a Kerkering), swung the game. Not saying the Eagles would have won. But they absolutely unraveled after that as a team. Sometimes a game gets away from you. Bears were charged up after that and we got deflated. Next week is a new game. Let's see.

Here's my question for the guys who know scheme and X's and O's - if everyone will simply blitz when we go under center, banking on a run or a play action pass they can blow up...why not mix in straight drop back from under center so Jalen can see the blitz and hopefully beat it?

EPA and success rate and in general over analytics culture has become a major peeve of mine over the past few years. I'm going to be railing on it a lot, I'm tired of it. Not teams using it, but analysts and media people over reliant on them. It's hurt football discussion in my eyes. We're getting less talk about actual on the field stuff and more just reeling off metrics as a substitute for it.

"Man the Eagles had a rough game last night... this happened on this play, that happened on that play, etc" has turned into "The Eagles had a rough game last night. Their EPA/drive on offense was ____, which ranks 5th worst of the Sirianni era." It's just a boring and terrible way to consume sports in my view as a fan. And everyone does it now. Probably because it requires less effort to rattle off metrics than it takes to actually discuss things.
