Sucks about Devonta but Lemon and Wicks are consistently open. Just need time to get them the ball and for Jalen to let is loose quicker.

I’m more worried about this suddenly awful defense being awful some more.

I disagree. They always planned to re-sign Carter. They were going to keep one of the other DTs. They chose Davis. Davis is the last of the 3 I'd have re-signed. He was considered by many to be a somewhat bust prior to last season. He had a good season but still doesn't play a high % of the snaps. Milton Williams was a rising player. I think he and Carter give you the best DT pairing in the NFL for years.

The Davis extension very well might end up being like a huge mistake. They play 2 different positions and have/had vastly different roles and responsibilities though. They kept Davis on a 5th year, while getting basically the same production from Ojomo at a fraction of the cost.

Yeah, not sure why people think the decision was Davis vs. Milt. It was Carter vs. Williams. You choose Carter 10 times out of 10 in that scenario.

If they didn't extend Davis, they would need to draft or sign a new run stuffer.

The thing that gets lost with MW, besides the ability to play more snaps than JD (absolutely gets gassed every game with a limited snap count) is he can play across the line, while JD can play only one position. Also, in 2024, with their great depth, they were able to play more 5 man fronts and could rest Carter. Last year, he played way too many snaps and you are kinda hampered with another guy who can't play many and limited to one spot at nose tackle. MW also was solid against the run with Eagles. Just a more complete and versatile football player.

Is it easier to find a game wrecker DT or a run stuffer?

At $26M per and $65M guaranteed, it is indeed a mistake. How big I don't know. Essentially, gave up the chance to sign 2 young studs, at 2 different times, who are better than Jordan Davis. In Milton Williams last year and Moro Ojomo next year. He should have just let him play the 5th year out, like he's going to let Nolan Smith do and he comes out a winner with optionality. Could even let him test the market and see where you are at then.

To boil it down I want him to show at any position - but he's not running through RBs now, I'm doubtful he'd hold up uncovered against OTs at OLB.

Which is so odd since early reports in camp last year were that he was too physical and they had to talk to him to back off on his own teammates.

I think there is potential if they let him bulk and let him play nasty.

Taking an off ball LB in round 1 was a mistake. It forced them to have to let Dean go. Two mistakes for me were not picking Milton Williams of the 3 non Carter DTs and then drafting a LB in 2025 which forced the Dean decision.

I saw some people say Sweat, but given his degenerative knees I get that one more.

I understand not thinking it was a great choice but there is a context to the choice that makes sense at the time. The question is always who was the better choice at 31? Nick Emmanwori would have been the best pick. Although if they take him round 1, do they sign Woolen in the offseason? Arguably, they could have drafted Fannin in the 2nd if they took Emmanwori. That leaves them with a hole to file at LB that arguably would go to Trotter. Fannin isn't a great blocker so he probably would not fix that issue on the offense. What would give me real regret is if they had passed on a good IOL or Edge prospect. That is not the case. There was no one picked who would be better than players on their roster.

well the Davis contract kind of ruins my argument…but by and large, good teams that are able to stay good and competitive for long stretches don’t give out many contracts to rotational/situational players when they have a capable replacement already on the roster. Winning, especially winning a SB raises the price tag of everything. You can’t keep everyone…and everyone can’t be an All Pro as well. Clearly though after last year they viewed Davis as a foundational piece.

FWIW, i would have loved to find a way to keep Milt…but it just wasn’t in the cards and common sense says if you got a player about as equal at a fraction of the cost, you stick with the cheaper option to try to get better elsewhere.

Adding weight/strength should’ve been an offseason priority at either position, but the upper body injuries I assume are scuttling those efforts. Could he play with more violence if he was thinking less from the edge, very possible, it’s also possible at 230lb-240lbs he wouldn’t be capable to do the dirty work required by Vic. From my perspective if the goal all along was to develop an edge, we should’ve gone with Ezaraoku (sp?) as he has the length and some tricks already in the bag.

Has @mattwill been around this week? He hasn’t announced results from last weeks picks or started the pick thread this week.

Milt runs pretty hot and cold. Love him as DT3…

I think the problem post Superbowl is that everyone got delirious with the potential of the defense and what contracts would look like down the line and said well we can't sign this guy or can't sign that guy if we sign this guy this offseason. In the end, let's go over all those guys.

MW- Yes. He's one of my chosen 2 DTs long term. Especially and I mean especially, after what he did in the Superbowl and the 2nd half of that year.

Jurgens- At that time with a bad back and for Top Center money. A hell no! Not after back surgery. I'm waiting on that one for sure.

Sweat- No, not for the money he was getting. But in hindsight, would have been a solid move. But he was low on the priority list.

Blankenship-No. Especially for $8M plus per and how he looked last year.

Dean- I was neutral on that one.

Wouldn't have minded it. The handwriting was on the wall tho with Campbell draft pick.

Carter- Iffy, I'm waiting and signing him only if he rebounded this year from injuries. He was a TBD for me. If he acted up and did a hold-in, I'm ready to trade him for a big package. Certainly not giving him almost $40M per year. He scammed ya Howie. 😅

Davis- No. Let the contract run out and see his market. Leave window open for an Ojomo extension. I had $15M as his top salary. Definitely not $26M. Howie you done got scammed. AGAIN!!!

Right now there is exactly one shoo in: Q. He's a stud. Period.

Almost shoo in- Coop. Depending on the dough there. I want him getting substantially less than Q. Thinking $20M there. Tops. He needs to get that Cowboy stink off of him and to stop banging their cheerleaders. Can't blame him though.

Hunt- TBD. Need to see his so called progression and finishing plays for sacks. Like him tho. Don't want to break the bank there.

N.Smith- Pretty much a no, right now. And thought that way all along with his injuries etc. Unless he comes cheap as a rotational edge. Maybe $5M with incentives.

Didn't like Howie extending Barkley either, after 1st year into a 3 year contract. Not a biggie tho.

Alot can change in 20 months regarding keepers and such.

And Carter isn't hot and cold? Davis? Sweat? The dude was pretty good here once he got a starting role. Funny thing, was peeps told me he was a product of JC. 😅 JC needs him just as much. They played off of each other, like gangbusters. And was a force. Right now, JC can be neutralized pretty easily. That production with MW has not been replicated yet with another DT since.

JC is much better against the run, honestly so is Ojomo. I’d like to see JC play fewer snaps and without a caste - I’ve never been a fan of Vic’s lack of rotation.

I do think the panic this week is a little much. Ben Johnson owns us. They were getting 1st downs on command and slowly. Pressure ramped up on the offense and they had a crap game. It happens.

That said, the defense is a way bigger concern than the offense at this stage. 3 of our 4 best players are hurt already, and they seem like lingering injuries. We have no "solid” safety to offset Mukuba’s volatility (who btw is ALSO HURT). We can’t tackle and we cant actually sack QBs (I’m sure the pressure numbers are good though 🙄).

FWIW, MW grades out around the 70's (PFF) against the run in his career. JC has been bad against the run last year and this year. Again he's playing injured. But it is what it is. I like MO, but that ship sailed when you extended JD and JC in the same offseason.

Love Milton and was glad that we drafted him over Aleem McNeil, and don’t really want start sh** talking him for the sake of an argument. We were going to pay JC and had Ojomo in the wings - I’m comfortable with the decision. Glad he had a great ‘24 postseason and got paid top dollar in another conference.
