Now, while I’m pissed we traded up, I really do like Smith. I would have been happy with him at 12. I hate that we burned a 3 to move up.

I believe that you need to net the two trades together.  We get a first next year, move up on day 3, and the consensus pick.

He doesn't seem to have a frame that can carry much more efficiently.  If he wasn't adding some weight at Alabama, it's unlikely that he'll add much in the NFL.

The question is if he can separate like that in the NFL.  Desean may have run a 4.3, but he had the speed of a 4.2 guy at that weight.  Marvin Harrison was a 4.3 guy and a true burner.  

Devonta Smith isn't.

So the question is can he be an elite separator in the NFL?  If he can, throw the weight out the window; it doesn't matter.  If he can't, then he's in for some punishment.

You draft Smith under the assumption that he won't.  Alabama pretty much is the NFL.  If he didn't get much there or for his pro day, he won't gain it here.

I feel like we lost out on a potential Kelce replacement or starting LB or developmental CB with that trade up — one we probably didn’t have to make.

You can dislike the picks, but you can’t say they didn’t try.

First round WR, second round WR, second round TE. This added to a group that already had Alshon and Ertz. They tried.

3 is open, 6 is Kalil Tate.  I'm guessing he gets 6.

 

One rookie who intends to wear his college number at the next level is Alabama receiver Devonta Smith. He wore 6 for the Crimson Tide. He recently told PFT Live that he intends to wear No. 6 for whichever team drafts him.

He added that, if 6 isn’t available, he’ll choose No. 3.

100%. Huge risk. But we got ourselves a football player. The dude can flat out play. He’s overcome questions about size his whole life. But the guy can play and is uncoverable. And a high character guy. Leader. Just a football player. That’s all I wanted from this pick. He’ll never fail for lack of heart or effort. I’ll take that, even at 12. You gotta be able to cover him to hurt him.

That’s the knock on him. That’s why you can get him at 10. If he were 200 pounds instead of 170, he’d probably have been the first WR off the board.
