He absolutely sucks and nothing will change till he's gone. Romano is a disaster as is Kepler, Marsh, Castro, and a bunch of other moves I'm forgetting or trying to forget right now because they're so bad. This team can't even beat one of the worst teams in baseball and 1-7 in their last 8. DD will now sit on his hands and make some non inspiring barely move the needle trade at the deadline for another JAG who won't do anything to help.

There’s also a part of me that thinks to get there they may need a big collapse where they just miss the play for people to get fired and big changes to be made. Frankly they need a big shakeup cause they just keep doing the same thing over and over. They’ll say the dodgers knocked on the door multiple years before winning but it took the dodgers signing Ohtani and Yamamoto to push them over the top. The Phillies in the last 3 years have gone from signing Turner to Kepler and Romano. Dodgers started getting bigger guns and it got them overAlso im not saying Thomson’s job should be safe but imo their issues are on Dombrowski. Thomson has absolute crap in that bullpen besides 2 guys and garbage in LF and CF. Not much he can do with BP and OF with the crap Dave has given him.

Only a small handful of franchises in MLB have both the will and the means to perennially pay for upper tier rosters. Other sports have good ownership, bad ownership, good GM's, bad GM's...but MLB is so unique in that you get significant variation in how hard franchises are trying to win and objectively different resources with which they are trying to do so.So despite their terrible decisions and the accumulated frustration with them knocking on the door just to fail for a few years now, I have this persistent sense of gratitude towards the franchise. I guess it's when people used to say "At least the Eagles aren't the ......"That said, they have reached the ceiling of how much they either can or will invest in the team. They have a lot of big name players on mega deals who have reached the inevitable point of declining value on their contracts. Can't make 2+2 = 5. Unlike LA, they don't have the resources to put the team over the top. They could get lucky and just ride an absurd heater through the playoffs and win it all. But that's what it'll take. If a reset is coming either way, I guess there is no harm in enjoying the ride and praying for luck. But I think they just need to get that salary off the books, sign a new $500m middle of the order bat, buy a couple other all stars in the field, and hope the farm fills in the gaps and the starting rotation. But that's...the better part of a decade.

But that's...the better part of a decade.Their bigger issue in this is that they spent resources poorly. Right now you have $18 mil invested in Walker, $10 mil invest in Kepler, $10 mil invested in Romano. Thats $38 mil that they’ve just wasted on poor player evaluation that could’ve gone to other players far more helpful. I’d add nola making his money for another 5 years is another poor investment. This is why i say Dombrowski should have to face the music and hold far more responsibility cause he was given a good amount of resources. And he has wasted a ton of them over the years and made some poor trades at deadlines that did marginal improvement, just didn’t work at all (falter for Castro) or was just bad value (marsh for O’hoppe). To me Middleton gave Dombrowski and the Phillies have had enough resources to win a WS. Dombrowski has made bad moves and invested sizable amount of money that I’d consider dead weight and anchors that prevent them from fixing needs. Can’t be the dodgers in spending so Dombrowski has to not make the amount of financial mistakes he has. Can’t just piss away $40 mil on the roster as can’t make up for that like the dodgers or even YankeesI’d add their minor league system is top heavy. They have good top end prospects like miller and painter (now potentially Abel and possibly Crawford) but there’s no depth and the depth they do have are all single A guys years away. The Phillies minor league system is better than what it was 10 years ago but they still aren’t great. Frankly their international pool hasn’t been great and it shows at the major league level as Ranger Suarez and Sanchez (Alvarado who was a trade acquisition so he didn’t develop here. While Sanchez was trade too they actually developed him) are about the only ones on this roster. They have no hitters that were international pool development. Honestly when was the last international pool player they’ve developed to be an all star caliber player? Carlos Ruiz? I believe that’s also an issue.

I believe that’s also an issue.I have very little faith in their farm/developmental system. We've had some hyped prospects and they've almost all fizzled out. I don't know if it's selection or development/conversion into MLB players or both. If this team didn't have the luxury of a huge payroll and was one of those unfortunate exclusive home grown farm to table franchises...we'd definitely, consistently be one of the worst teams in baseball. And like you said...I think the international pool is more of an issue than their drafting.
June 7, 20251 yr I’m gonna be real angry and irritated when Ranger Suarez pitches for another team. meanwhile, we’re stuck in a nola contract that we shouldn’t have given
June 7, 20251 yr Runner on 3rd with nobody out and they still can't score. This team is so hard to watch.

June 7, 20251 yr Last 102 games in 2024 (including playoffs):51-5164 games this year:37-27Record without the horrific Rockies:30-27.So Phillies are basically what they were since London last year but faced a historically awful Rockies team 7 times this year and won all 7.I’d addPhillies run differential vs. Rockies +26Phillies run differential vs everyone else -10
