Let's take this a piece at a time.

Let's see how this draft plays out.

I think 2018-2020 was an anomaly, fueled by the SB.

Let's consider what 3 years in the NFL really is.

  • The average NFL player's career lasts 3.3 years.
  • The NFL forces players to be 3 years removed from HS before they are draft eligible.
  • Undrafted free agents sign a 3 year contract with the team.
  • The average NFL coach lasts 38 months in their job... that's 3.16 years, for those tracking the numbers.

  • In the NFL, 3 years is a career.
  • In the NFL, 3 years is a trend.
  • In no way can 3 consecutive seasons be excused as an 'anomaly'.  NFL stands for "Not For Long".

Doug and Schwartz had too much influence, and both were win now with veterans guys, I don't think either has the patience to develop a young team.

Schwartz might have had too much influence.  Doug?  No way you can actually make that argument.  A HC that can't control who the OC and WR coach are, cannot have the level of influence you (and a few others here - as well as the Lurie misinformation act at his termination PC) are trying to put on him.  That's just disingenuous.   Doug did NOT have that level of clout.  They tried to fire his OC after 2016, but Wentz stopped them.   They DID force him to fire his WR coach - Greg Lewis.  Then they forced him to fire his OC (Groh) and WR coach (Walch) a day after saying that they would be back.   And then Doug is putting players on the field that Howie has overpaid, even when they are NOT able to contribute to the level of the players that they were replacing.  But, this was all on Doug?

Quote

Should Howie have overruled them? Well, that also meant telling Lurie the party is over, it was a fluke, prepare for pain. So they doubled down.

The fact that Doug actually wanted to go for it in 2021 tells me all I need to know about his psyche, wishful thinking.

No... the Peters signing wasn't about Doug, it was about Lurie's relationship with him.   Bringing Desean back and overpaying him?  That was about Howie righting the wrongs of the past with Chip.  Restructuring Jeffery?  Howie.  Drafting JJAW?  Lurie.

Doug may have said he wanted to go for it.  He's a HC.  He doesn't have the luxury of the level of job security that Lurie's lapdog has.  (See above, average NFL coach tenure is just over 3 years.  Doug was now 3 years removed from the Super Bowl.  His clock was ticking.  Lurie wasn't going to leave him as the HC while they go through a rebuild.  That's the kind of move that only Howie seems to survive (repeatedly).

Quote

My suspicion is Howie has self-scouted, the fact that he and Lurie have committed to a rebuild (compare to the Flyers) says they have "buyers regret" for the last couple seasons.

Go back to 2012/2013, after the "Dream Team" debacle and before Chip asserted control over personnel, Howie's best drafts because he was focused on rebuilding and had little interference, so it was him and the scouts. Same in 2016. I think he can see that too, he's best when he trusts the board and wheels and deals off the board.

I'm optimistic b/c I see a lot of young AR in Sirianni, and I think he'll be on the same page with Howie and the scouts for the next couple drafts.

Doesn't mean they'll take the players this board wants, but they won't be taking players to plug holes or b/c the HC is enamored with the next Jeffrey or DeSean.

Howie's best moves are (as @RLC stated...) bargain shopping.   They very well may have self-scouted.  But at the same time, I heard the nonsense that Lurie uttered at that PC.  And that was discussing how THE GM and  the scouting department were great... had 5 future GMs, and yet... they failed miserably the last 3 drafts to add young talent.... basically any young talent.  And then we heard about how they had targeted the right players, but couldn't land any of them.  Sorry.  That's a cop out.  If you identify quality players, you should land some of them.  Drafting in the 20s doesn't exonerate them.  That would be saying that only 19 good players are ever available in the draft.  Well, that's bogus.  The Eagles could have and should have draft Justin Jefferson.  That falls on Howie.  He makes the final call on the draft pick, so he shoulders the responsibility.  It's on him.

And if Howie needs to be reminded to 'trust the board'... then shame on him.   That's why you MAKE a board...

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

That was Doug. Am I the only one in here who watched Lurie’s press conference after Pederson was fired? Lurie was very blunt that Doug wanted to keep extending the window.

Yeah... Doug did it.

You aren't the only one who watched what Lurie said.  I, however, also watched what Lurie and Howie did.  They forced him to fire his OC and WR coach the day after saying that they were safe, making himself out to look foolish and like a puppet.  But, yeah, Lurie and Howie were deferring to Doug on all these other moves.   That doesn't even come close to passing the sniff test.   Lurie wanted to put it all on Doug, to protect Howie.   It was an embarrassing rewriting of history, scapegoating and excuse making for Howie.

As far as Hurts, if drafting Hurts deep sixed Wentz' psyche, it was just a matter of time, something would have thrown him for a loop.

A confident QB isn't threatened by a late 2nd rd pick, you think Brady gave a crap about Garopollo?

And a QB who lacks confidence is too fragile to be a franchise QB.

If Hurts merely turns out to be a middle of the pack QB, that's tremendous value for #53, because middle of the pack QBs get traded for 1st rd picks all the time.

It might have been the lack of WR talent for about two and a half years... and starting to feel like he had to do too much, because while they had no WRs, the HC kept calling passing plays.

That would be epic fail.  Sign Malik Jackson, sign Javon Hargrave the next offseason, draft Barmore the next offseason.

Let’s see how many resources we can dump into the DT position while the rest of the team falls apart so we can merely get good run stoppers.

45.9 completion percentage in the second half of his starts.

It's going to be remarkable how irrelevant the one thing you hang your Hurts hate on ends up being in 2021.

Scored point on 2 of 22 second half possesions.

I hope he proves a whole lot of us wrong, but the FO has been linked to multiple QB's, and positioned themselves to move up for a QB next year.  There is plenty of doubt.

Of course, we didn't actually open for posting until 5 days later on the evening of April 20th (at 8:00 PM Eastern time). It was a very fast and crazy year!

Well done.

No worries. You'll be proven wrong.  You'll have to come up with some other random stat to hold as the gold standard to attack him on.

Scoring is a random stat now?

I am not attacking him, those are facts.  Gotta put his play in context for the kids that see a Sportscenter highlight and think he is the next coming.

I don't see any lack of ability as a passer from him except the ability to throw it 65+ yards down the field in the air.

then you dont know what you are looking at. passing is far more than how far you can air it out.

the only place i would say he does well is the sideline fade

You can easily put his play in context by comparing his rookie year to the Eagles rookie QBs of past.  All you do is latch onto the one negative stat you kind find as if it is this defining end game stat about him.  You're smarter than that.  You don't think a QB with expierence and hopefully improved coaching with half time adjustments won't be better in the second half of games?

What throws does he not do well that I am not seeing?

He mustered 17 points against an atrocious Cowboys defense.  A defense that gave up 24.6 points a game.  A defense that gave up 26.3 PPG in the games they won.  Only 1 team scored less points against the Cowboys, the Bengals without Burrow and Mixon.  They gave up 30+ points 8 times, 40+ points twice.

So you think Lurie flat out lied?

A safety that could possibly be moved to LB, Divine Deablo. He won't be confused with the white snake, that's for sure. 6-3 226. Maybe he will be there in round 4 or 5. I like em

Why don’t we just draft a LB and stop trying to convert to safeties and DEs.

I assume that is because he can tackle and doesn't take horrible angles.

Most coaches aren’t going to actively want to rebuild. They want to win as much as possible every year.

I don't think Howie knows what those are

If we are looking DT, I expect the eagle to love Osa Odigizuwa from UCLA. He reminds me of Hargrave. Hes kinda small but yet can play NT. And though he can play NT, hes a very good pass rusher. He is introduced in this video at about 7:35

Take it how ever you want.  He put it all on Doug... I don't buy that, not even a little bit.

Oh, I still want a linebacker earlier, make no mistake. I think they need more than one. Deablo would be an option in my book as a mid round guy. This back 7 is bare and I think he brings a nice skill set to the table.

To himself most of all

El Diablo!?😈  So, the Eagles have to engage with dark forces to fix the LB issue?
