They need somebody with experience that will make the team returning punts. I know Covey could be stashed on the PS but he needs to clear waivers first. no team has ever claimed him but some contender that needs a return guy could do it.I don't see Jake Majors making the team even though he has played well. He will be a tough cut. They have three IOL only guys in reserve counting Morris (who will make the team). They don't need four IOL only guys in reserve.I have Covey going to the Practice Squad, along with the Long Snapper. It wouldn’t even surprise me if Jake Elliot goes there too. I also have Greenard and Lemon starting the season on the PUP and IR respectively for the first four weeks.

DeJean needs to be on the field for 100% of the snaps. Would you sit Thieneman or EMW when the team is in Base? With that asked, two other questions:(1) In the pecking order of position value/leverage, where does Safety fall in that order? Bottom 25% of all positions?(2) What do you see as the marginal team performance improvement that either of those rookies give the team over Epps?

(60% of snaps)1) Every position is important, some cost more than others. I don’t think anyone would discount the value that Seattle’s EMW provided to their defense.2) Maybe a lot, especially against the better offenses that are capable of attacking the weakest link of the defense.

And you have no backups. (by the way, both of those guys are injury prone too)Calling that semantics does not help the dire situation the team will find itself in on the field. You need to call DeJean what he is, the nickel, and keep at least one extra safety because of that. Then, if Carter is the first man up at nickel in case of injury to DeJean, you may want to keep yet another safety because of that. The depth chart should probably have S, and NB as different positions in order to make sure you have enough for each position. Semantics? Or just logical? It should beS- Mukuba, Epps, Wis, GushikenCB/S or NB (whatever you want to call it)- DeJean, CarterCB- Mitchell, Woolen, Jones, TrashAll reasonable thoughts, but the fatal flaw in your thinking is that you are seeing it through zero-sum / single-threaded eyes. DeJean will be listed in both positions, not just one. Carter will be too. Gush appears to have potential for both. Pulley does as well. You are also making your analysis based on DeJean getting injured. That’s a glass half empty approach IMO. I’m not as pessimistic as you are.

The only value I ever saw in it was the option to trade McKee for a better return than they gave up for Dalton, but it seems McKee is destined to play out his contract with the Eagles at this point. I don’t like Dalton at all as a #2 and don’t see him putting any wins together if Hurts gets injured. He’ll be cut at the end of camp and I’d frankly be a bit disappointed if he’s brought back to the PS.How much do you value his "coach/mentor on the field” attributes?

And in games where the Eagles build a lead the percentages of base in the 1st Half will be higher than the percentages of base in the 2nd Half.

Its something miniscule.I figure last year, Dejean played the boundary in base - so yes, his safety snaps would’ve been a subset of that subpackage (minuscule). The ~25% I cited is likely the absolute max that we’d see this season. It’s very possible that Woolen is pushed to the bench in short yardage, versus heavy packages, etc. and that number could be significantly less (again).

That doesnt seem heavy to me. It was 6 CBs and 4 safeties. If anything, heavy on CB but that becomes a necessity when you create that extra hybrid position for DeJean. We had it with Corey Graham and had no backup for him which hurt the defense when no one could fill his role when he missed time.
August 24Aug 24 3 minutes ago, mattwill said:60-70 snaps per game is pretty close to the NFL average. That sounds very wrong. The eagles were on the field for 70 snaps against SF in 2021 and everyone was disgusted by that fact. Moreover pointed to that fact as part of the downfall of the defense when that happened during "the gauntlet" of tough teams. Then the team collapsed. The defense was pathetic in that game and pretty much every week after. If the defense is on the field anywhere near 70 snaps absolutely no one is going to feel the performance was average. Theyll be calling for heads to roll.
