Ok.  But, why is it shameful?

Because it's a bad look for a good team to be scheduling really bad teams to beat up on to pad their win totals. I know it's become pretty common to schedule a 1-AA team. SEC powerhouses often play teams like Georgia Southern or whatever. Ohio State I believe plays Youngstown State from time to time. And I get Penn State playing Delaware. But to add a SECOND cupcake (and okay, maybe I was wrong in asserting UMass was 1-AA when perhaps they are now a Division 1 team) is a bad look.

Sure, I get that there are a certain number of teams that teams in a conference have to play, and that they only get a handful of out of conference games. And maybe you don't want to schedule powerhouses for all of those (although schedule strength is looked at for playoff seedings so maybe not such a bad idea), but I would think it'd be better to schedule some middling teams (like a Tulsa or Tulane or East Carolina or UTEP or Colorado State...teams like that...or even MAC school which I consider fair as well) rather than ridiculously weak ones.

As far as "shameful" is concerned, yes, I think it's appropriate. Although I'm not a parent, I imagine it would be like watching my fourth grader beat up some second grader on the playground. What the hell! I'd feel shame at that.

Take a look at Michigans first three games. BTW there isn't much difference between a bottom dwelling D1 school and a top FBS program (Delaware). We also play Ohio State next week. In their house. Did you expect them to schedule a juggernaut today? Not gonna happen. Every team plays cupcakes. Are you proud about your victories over powerhouses like Tennessee State and Central Michigan?

Central Michigan, yes. They're a Division 1 team, although not a strong one. That's fair game. I'm not pleased (or proud) about Tennessee State. I think it's a bad look to schedule 1-AA teams like that. But it's also the very first time ND has played a team like that. (Let's not go back a century and discuss their 103-0 victory over Rose Poly or the shellacking they put on American Medical College or whatever they were called.)

I don't think I've ever seen two CBs go down on the same play before

The Phillies once had two catchers suffer season ending* knee injuries in the same inning on plays at the plate.

I'm with you on power teams playing cupcakes.  I hate it.  We all want to see competitive games not 60-7 or 73-10 scores.

There are plenty of teams all across college football that could play each other where you don't have to play the UMass, Tennessee State Tech, Southern Kentucky State, Hofstra, etc.

@mattwill

Wilson hit on 70% of his passes the last two weeks with his RT healthy but has one of the slowest releases in the NFL.  Even without Carter the DL will get pressure. Given now the Jets like the run, Edmunds can play Jeremy Chinn this week.   Eagles top three receivers should feast.

Eagles 31 Jets 20

Bonus Smith’s turn. Over 100.

Bonus Bonus: Allen with a TD turns to the camera and says thanks to Matt for believing in him.

Eagles win 420 - 0 to coincide with my retirement ceremony tomorrow.

Yeah, that's my biggest concern tomorrow if I'm being honest. Same for a few weeks when they play the Giants.

Glad Carter isn’t out there playing hurt. He may arguably be the biggest injury we could have on defense. Reddick, Carter, Sweat.

Well Eagles Fans.....It's Week 6 so it's time to get that Football Fix.  The Birds have shocked the NFL World with a 5-0 Start after losing Super Bowl LVII.  They look to continue their run with their 3rd Straight Win in October.  The Eagles and Jets have a long history dating back 50 years to 1973.  The Birds lead the All-Time Series 12-0.   Now the Eagles and Jets do play in the Preseason a lot where the Jets have won.  They even tied.  But during the Regular Season it's a different story.  Obviously the Jets Defense is the strength of the Team.  They are really doing a number on opposing Offensives.    Now the Offense has been pretty average at best.  Yeah, Yeah.  No Aaron Rodgers.  Of course they would be better with him. Zach Wilson obviously leaves more to be desired.  But he has been playing better the last two weeks.  Thankfully the Birds will not take the Jets lightly.

One positive thing about this year is the Eagles aren't blowing teams out every week.  This means they never overlook an opponent.   Sadly for the Jets, they just don't match up well with the Birds.  Eagles Defense also plays much better on the Road holding teams to 15 PPG.   Eagles Offense is only scoring about 24 PPG on the Road.   Even though it's hard to beat a team this many times over 50 years.  I believe the Birds keep it going.  The Eagles are averaging 29 PPG, The Jets are average roughly 13 PPG over this 12 Game Series thus far.   That's kind of where I'm at with this.  I wouldn't be shocked by a blowout, but I also wouldn't be shocked by a closer game.  I think the Jets D will gives us a fight.   With that said, too much fire power on Offense and Defense for the Jets to keep up.  Either through the Air or Run Game, Eagles should be able to move the ball.  Eagles D also gives Zach Wilson all he can handle.  Eagles O keeps it rolling.  Birds cruise to 6-0.

BIRDS - 30

JETS - 12

JALEN - RUSH TD

AJ - TD

GOEDERT - TD

JAKE - FG x3

DEFENSE - MULTIPLE INT's, MULTIPLE SACKS, FUMBLE

Yeah, that's not a fair comparison at all.  They are both 4th graders, and the 4th grader that's going to get beat up is getting handsomely rewarded for participating.   I pointed out later what is in it for the smaller schools and what's in it for the bigger schools, and like I said, it HELPS the game overall.  This isn't a 4th grader beating up a 2nd grader.  This is more like an amateur boxer agreeing to spar a professional boxer.  The amateur boxer gets to measure himself against someone significantly better, and gets paid for it.   He gets to learn some new things, and gets some exposure.

Nothing shameful about it.   Racking up wins is meaningless as far as the playoff is concerned.  For PSU to get there, they have to go through OSU and Michigan.  They can't skirt around that and pick and choose their opponents each year like an independent does.  They play their conference schedule and then they can fill out the rest whichever way they see fit.

BTW... UMass is a D-1 FBS school, not D-1AA (or FCS), a former member of the MAC.  But they left hoping for bigger things... which hasn't worked out.  They have no conference currently and so they need teams like Penn State to agree to play them to have a schedule.   They are currently bad, but want to get better... and want to pour more money into the program.  Playing PSU helps them achieve that goal.

You'll care when draft time comes around and you'll wonder how Billy Smith from Tiny St. compares to Johnny Jones from Big Boy U.   Having head to head with small schools and big schools HELPS the game, even if its not overly interesting to watch.   But, that's the beauty of NCAA football... there were a ton of great matchups to watch instead.  The matchups with the smaller school sure beats the 'bye' option that these schools would have when they aren't matched up against their own conference.

Money is generated and goes to the small schools to help their programs grow.  Their players get exposure to better athletes and a taste of the big time college football experience and the ones that might have a chance at the next level have a chance to show their talents against better competition helping to erase the narrative that they only look good because of the level of competition they played against.  It is a net good for the game as a whole.

My cable package gets ND home games on it randomly. so watched bits of the USC game last night.  Caleb Williams has a lot to learn; footwork not good, struggled to adapt (as did Riley) - an ideal game from the NFL perspective as it gives them tape on his struggles for interviews. Did he base his game on being Mahomes?

But can see the potential there once he gets harder coaching.

Same. I like having some primetime/4pm games...but we have 3 1pm games all season. That's gross.

Not the biggest Williams fan , QBs I like

Pratt

Rattler

Ward

Reed

McCarthy

Kurtis Rourke as a sleeper

that said this class of QBs by far the best over last 10 years or more

Goodell is such a tease

Perfect game to get Penny touches, minimum 10. While I want Swift to get touches, I don't think it would be smart to pound him into the Jets defense all day. Same goes for Hurts, especially for Hurts.

Time to start getting the dust and rust knocked off Penny. They will need a strong number two option to Swift going into the second half of the season. He goes down and we are in a heap of trouble. Let's get Penny going and if the coaches just have no trust there then go get someone else.
